Modern Western Armies have never practiced Roman decimation. Typically, they execute the ringleaders, which is what Adama and Roslin would appear to be doing.
As for the Quorum, what I think is going to happen is that new ones will be elected (or however they do it). Lee will certainly become VP. And once they alliance is agreed upon - and after the failure of the coup, it will be - the Cylon will send someone to represent themselves as the 13th tribe. Most likely, it’ll be Tory.
It just occurred to me what the literal definition of decimation is: killing every tenth prisoner/captive/enemy, thus the “deci”. I remember learning that once, but I’d forgotten it, and I was getting confused why everyone on this thread wanted Adama to “decimate” the mutineers. Now I get it. Again.
Who says you can’t learn nothing on the Internets?
where was Hoshi in all of this? after he was lead away from CIC, we don’t see where he was taken, and i didnt see him when they took back CIC. i know they wrote his relationship with gaeta after all of this had been written, but… just wonderin. - and i think that roslin should have been there when the executed gaeta and zarek. sorta in the same way that baltar is gaeta’s foil on the adamaroslin side roslin is zarek’s foil. so it would have been somewhat fitting for her to be there to witness his execution.
Which will be VERY bad if/when Tyrol finds out about her and Cally. Even if he isn’t the baby daddy. Personally, I’ll bet on the Chief getting some sort of post before Tory.
Re: Hoshi: I imagine he’s still in the brig with the senior CIC staff (funny that Starbuck and Lee didn’t spring them when they let the Cylons and Helo out), until Adama took back over. He’ll probably get Gaeta’s old job now, which I would imagine would be emotionally trying and weird for him, too.
Re: Roslin: I think her absence reinforced two things:
she wasn’t kidding when she said she was done with worrying about the Fleet; her brief and badass stint as Madame Airlock on the baseship was a valedictory moment that she only took on because things had gotten so very, very frakked up.
Lee was there, and her absence reinforces that Lee is taking over her responsibilities, standing where she should have been standing.
I hadn’t thought of this before, but how ironic is it that the New Apollo was there for the Old Apollo’s execution?
I didn’t think of Tyrol. I don’t think he has the sort of political ambition to be say, president, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up, if not Quorum delegate, but some sort of liaison.
Agreed. He even seems to be that now - bringing the information about jump drive upgrades, cylon desire for citizenship, etc to the attention of Adama.
Did anyone else notice the now-complete role reversal and juxtaposition of the Fleet homo sapiens population with the Cylons in this episode?
Consider, that we all tuned in and:
…Watched the seemingly emotionless Galactica Marines mutiny, mechanically taking orders, killing without conscience the Quorum and others - mimicking Cylon Centurions;
…Observed Apollo/Lee and Starbuck/Kara efficiently terminating humans right and left - just like the Cylons did on New Caprica and elsewhere;
…Noticed lawyer Romo Lampkin coolly kill his Marine guard pen-to-throat without hesitation.
Add the usually passionless actions of Cylons into the swap:
…Gaeta really not giving a whit about ordering death and destruction;
… Zarek coldly assassinating the opposition ASAP without recrimination.
Mix in:
…Roslin sounding more like a pissed-off Cylon than human when she shouts: “I’m coming for ALL of you!”
…Skinjobs in the rebel Basestar acting humanly passive, deciding to turn tail and run in the best Resurrectionless tradition;
…Cally-offing, mother-chucking, high-minded Final Five Tory now acting decidedly wimpish and demure - so very ‘girly’.
And so on and so forth.
So . . .
We are them; they are us.
If there ever was any doubt, well, there is none now . . .
Re: Tyrol - I was concerned after he realized Nicky wasn’t his that he would melt down, but I really have enjoyed him best being the Chief, as he’s done the last two episodes - he felt like Season 1 Tyrol again. So I like the idea of him having a leadership role in the future. He’d earned a lot of people’s respect over the years, and with his recent actions as well.
Well that’s an interesting point CM. On the one hand we have Roslin telling the rebel Cylons that, if they jump away, they’ll never again see their precious F4. Because Gaeta and company certainly will kill them. End of story. And the Cylons agree.
Then we have the idea that Ellen is going to make one of the great comebacks in show business (although lots of doubt whether she does so through the tub of goo in the preview). (I can hear Ed Sullivan introducing her now …“Tonight on our shew, just back from 8 sold out weeks at The Sands in Las Vegas, Nevada, the one, the only, the effectively immortal - let’s hear it for ELLEN TIGH!” It helps if you can imagine Ed’s accent and recall his rounded shoulder slumping posture.)
So, either the rebel Cylons do not know jack about the nature of the FF (as in - they can be reborn), because if they did they would have told Roslin - nice try, but we’re outta here. Or they do and, and, um…I have no idea.
My gf almost started shaking me to get be to be normal again. I was just devastated. Couldn’t even cry- just sat there shell shocked.
Points to you and me for being anti-Zarek from the start. Also, I like the idea of putting the non-ring leaders into the prison ship and letting them cool their heels there. That’s the only thing you can really do with them- to kill them all would probably rile up the civilian fleet more (because their reasons for revolting were real) while reintegrating them shows weakness and keeps a knife at your throat. Seelix, however, should be executed. She has not mutinied twice. She needs to pay.
LMAO. That’s perfect.
I want to agree with you, but remember what happened to Baltar when he tried to publish his thoughts?
I think that Tyrol might actually have been able to snap back to himself because of learning the truth about Nicky. It was a good, sharp reminder for him that no matter what he does, the universe will turn everything upside down and inside out when it wants. He was the Chief, he was terrified of being a Cylon, he was a labor leader, he was a father, he was a voice for the people, he was Cally’s love. All that was stripped away, starting with his humanity and fear of being a Cylon, and running all the way through to his fatherhood.
I think with that (Nicky), Tyrol realized, like Saul taught him, he is who he defines himself to be so long as he continues to be that man. Sure, it’s circular logic, but if time can be circular then so can logic, right? Basically, just because he lost biological fatherhood doesn’t mean he lost fatherhood. It follows, then, that he hasn’t truly lost any of who he is. He can still be a voice for the people, a leader, a loyal crewmember, the love of Cally’s life, perhaps even be the Chief again. And in seeing all that possibility, he plopped Nicky in day care and went to go be who he is.
Also, I loved the ironic homage to RDM’s TNG days with Tyrol actually struggling to fit in the ventilation tunnels and clanging his way along rather than gliding swiftly and silently through the way that Geordi or Picard or Riker always seemed to be doing.
