Revisiting Command & Conquer franchise

hi all,

just happened to revisit my love for all things C&C (not the music factory sic) ,…of course if the 2 references clicked for you - that means you qualify for the appellation of “OLD” (like me  )

you see, i’m seriosly thinking of getting Red Alert 3 (RA3) and the expansion pack with all the hollywood stars in it, Uprising The wiki says Uprising does not require RA3 to play? Is that true?

I was just figuring out how to spell Jenny McCarthy (always having trouble with that) when i figured that RA3 deserves it’s own IMDB listing! And i was right!

Anyways, so i check out the Command and Conquer website (and wonder why I’ve never done so in all these years the internet has been around) and come across : A C&C podcast known asBattlecast Primetime

Of course, you could just watch it on youtube :

This is Part 1 of 5 from the Premier. I suggest you’d double-click on the youtube link to watch the rest…

If you loved shows like Boston Legal for it’s irreverent demeanour, this game is for you (PS what’s with C&C and wrestling?) :

Holy crap, my laptop battery just totally died. I love this Windows resume feature - I see that 3gigs of my harddisk are put to good use!

The eye-candy has expanded quite a bit from just Kari Wuhrer :

One of the women is an actual Gladiator :

I love Command & Conquer, the original Windows 95 version – believe it or not.
I did get C&C Red Alert and played it a bit, but stopped and quite frankly prefered the Win 95. And I even got C&C Win 95 to run on WindowsXP.

C&C may be my favoriate computer game— though it’s a toss up betweent that and Civilization. But, hey, that’s not sayin’ much cuz I don’t really play computer games anymore — haven’t in years. Though I do fire up some C&C on a rare occasion.

And, do not judge me, but I love the bug in the AI of the game that prevents the enemy from getting past sandbags. I build sandbag walls everywhere and the Forces of Nod can’t get to me.

I played both the original and and Red Alert my freshman year in college and had a blast. But then i grew into other games. My dad however still plays quite a bit. Well to be honest he has my mom hide the discs so he only plays on holidays. and then he plays for hours on end.

I love this franchise and have played most of the titles. The most one recent one is especially awesome since you can get this (among other awesome things like ninjas):

All will tremble before the might of King Oni!!

I just bought RA3. holy crap, there’s a MUSIC disk as well as a bonus disk! It’s like i just bought a DVD or something… There’s all the classic C&C music themes (what’s that word Bear McCreary used?) we all know and love remixed into full length songs! Superb quality stuff!

Now I’m getting familiarised with using the mouse that came with the laptop for some serious gaming (i’ve always been more of a touchpad person )

2 hrs later…

I’m going through the tutorials now. (hey, that picture of a girl that appears at the end of each lesson - isn’t that Sarah Chalke from Scrubs?) I’m taking an “Assume nothing, learn everything” posture right now.

I like how each unit has special powers. Mecha Tengu rocks! (hey, aren’t they a Gundam/Macross reference?)

I remember, back in the old Red Alert, there was also a limit of 5 units one could cram into an amphibious MCV - I got around it by cramming 5 infantry units into a troop carrier, repeat 5 times, then cram the 5 troop carriers into the MCV. Once i cross a water obstacle, i’ve got 25 infantry units PLUS the 5 troop carriers… heheh, neat right?

One thing about these games ( and by extension, most games from the 90’s) that prevented me from being a hardcore gamer was that they made me seasick!?!?!? Maybe it’s the high-index glasses i’m wearing - DOOM was the worst seasick-inducing experience for me.

Ok, i’ve got to stop now - ep 205 of Sanctuary is on Scifi now (it’s STILL not Syfy yet)

It is standalone yes. The campaign is shorter. Due to designing the game to be a digital download, there’s far less video, but you still get some. No online play.

The up side is even more remix tunes. A few new super uber units that tend to unbalance game play but are fun. At $20 retail it is still the best RTS bargain out there. When I play skirmish vs. CPU I prefer Uprising over RA3.

I never understood the C&C3 fans dislike of RA3. Every technical aspect of the game received more polish than it did in C&C3. Maybe it’s just the toon shaders.

I’m waiting for 4 to go on deep discount or something before i get anywhere near it.

Command and Conquer… where to begin, lol. Lets just say I have had a long love hate relationship with that series. In addition to Red Alert 3, I would recommend Command and Conquer 3 - Tiberiam Wars as a pretty solid entry in the series as well. Also has quite a few big Hollywood names as well (Grace Park, Josh Holloway, Tricia Helpher, Billy Dee Williams, Michael Ironside, just off the top of my head), but somehow they managed to make the cut scenes boring. :frowning:

For fans of the older games and expansions, they have made some of them available for free on their website:
http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic

Most do C&C3 before RA3 yup.

I’ve always been a Blizzard 1v1 random ladder ho myself, but I like the Command&Alert franchises too. Because the Red Alerts are funny where C&C is so serious, they’re closer in spirit to the Warcraft/Starcraft titles. Funny RA with full motion video cleavage is shameless but inspired.

I’m still trying to cope with the fact Glynnis Talken won’t be voicing the Queen of Blades anymore. I’ll try not to hold that against Tricia Helfer, it’s not her fault. First Relic canned Heidi Ernst as the voice of the Homeworld mothership, now this stunt with ActiBlizzard. Don’t they know we don’t like change!?!?! Miss you Glynnis. Tito, get me a tissue.

In this day & age, I’m still amazed at the wonders of the internet.

When the first Red Alert rolled out, sure, the web was around (and still pretty new for the average layman). But video compression ratios back then and the absence of flash technology made things like Youtube unfeasible until now.

This is a godsend for noob gamers like me:

//youtu.be/kRgJg3e0lMA

For me, I liken Red Alert to chess play. When I was watching the dvd’s that came with the game, the game developers even alluded to it:

First, there’s the opening moves: developing an economy, rolling out men & materiel, etc,

Then, there’s the middle game : levelling up, gaining ground, etc (what we call “development” in chess)

Lastly, the end game, where the Mammoth tanks and V4 rockets roll out. I liken this to when the Rook and Queen come out to play.

But where the difference ends is the sheer complexity of planning : there’s land, sea & air units that attack differently, and each unit has it’s own special attack move as well.
