I’m putting myself through school by working as a technician in a college chemistry lab, handing out equipment and supervising experiments.
I was having sort of a slow period last night (easy experiment, no help required), and I got to thinking… earlier that day I did a type of analysis called nephelometry where we create a suspension of sulfate particles and measure how much light they scatter. The suspension I created looked sort of familiar, so last night I did some experimenting.
I took some homogenized milk we use for coffee (milk is a suspension of fat particles) and added about twice as much glycerol (aka glycerin) to thicken it. It looked pretty good, but it wasn’t glowing the way goo does on BSG. So I added some borax and sodium phosphate, turned down the light in the stockroom and shined the UV lamp we use to monitor chromatography: it looked REALLY shite and sort of glowy, just like on BSG!
Hopefully my boss won’t read this post and find out how I’ve been using the chemical supplies…
