Reason 2 why Laura doesn't deserve to be President

Remember her horrible record, especially on women’s rights. Remember that she has NEVER been elected. Remember that not only was she never elected… but she ran and lost. But that worst thing of all.

She only got her Sec of education Job, because she was screwing the President. She wasn’t even an intern. SHe was a teacher ( school teacher as Adama, Cain, and Tigh point out) who screwed her way into a job. Call it what you like, but that’s cannon… she screwed Adar and had an affair with him, and she got herself a job for it.

I cracks me up every time my ex-girlfriend says that she is a role model for ANYONE, especialy women. All those hard working women who don’t screw to get jobs miss out! That’s the leasson she gives for little girls at home watching.

I have no problem with her doing it, happened for years in the real world… but don’t hold her up as a role model.

and she has NO claim on the Presedentcy

According to her bio the affair didnt start until until shortly before the fall of the colonies.
And she was with Adars administrations from when he was a Mayor, as were most of the 42 other ahead of her in the lines of succession. I dont think they all slept with him for their jobs.

yep, but it’s a matter of CANNON that SHE did. They might all be clean… but she is not. She is as a matter of cannon an adulterous ( get the big red A out) and if we’ve watched how she runs the fleet… an opportunist. Nothing out of character for the type of woman that she is. Everything in her profile says that she will sleep with and/or manipulate the emotions and loyalties of men to keep or gain positions of power.

In politics and business when a leader sleeps with or carries on an affair with a subordinate, and said subordinate is promoted time after time by that leader… it is legally assumed that this is why. ( for instance it’s against the ethics boards of EVERY US corporation within the SEC, and the ethics rules for the House, Senate, President, and every department in the US and UK governments)

This is why anyone passed over in favor of the fratranizing subordinate for a promotion or a position can and will win a lawsuit. Because it is legally and generally accepted that this is the case.

Well the episode didn’t say anything about it being a NEW affair, the wiki didn’t say it, and Sci-fi 's Bio doesn’t say it either. I don’t know what bio says it’s a new affair… but it’s not an official one.

But in the episode it’s self Adar says they have " known ( and he stresses the KNOWN) each other for a long time" . A biblical reference to HAVE BEEN SCREWING.

It’s a safe assumption that you go from mayor’s office associate to a much larger job and grow apart, not closer. People begin affairs with people that they work close with and are practically on top of each other. Not someone with a full time cabin ate job that you USED to know professionally or otherwise.

ALSO just a history lesson about men. We ( and especially Presidents and CEO’s ) also don’t initiate new affaires with wrinkled 55 year old women that no doubt know our wives and kids and stuff. He’s the president for gods sakes! We get a hold of our 22 year old web designers. That is the history of men.

She was a cute school teacher when they hooked up and he was just a mayor with a vision. That’s the arc she practically laid out for us in the episode.

In absence of cannon stating that it was a brand new affair, it’s safe to say she was. Plus, like grand ma always says… if it quacks, waddles, and has a beak… it might be a goose if you want it to be… but the safer bet is Duck.

LOL!!! see it’s all good cause I said LOL! My buddies’ daughter taught me that!

That’s why she keeps Lee a close suboridinate. Maybe she hopes he’ll try to screw his way to the top…

It’s “canon.” At least in the context you appear to be using it in. Though the idea of “cannons” impacting politics is always exciting. They shoot things at other things.

Anyhoo, she really is a dictator posing as president because Roslin knows best, but she really does. One of the real disappointments I have in th series tis that we never see a good leader elected lawfuly and taking care of the survivors as they should. I think Roslin does a decent job early on, but she’s obviously losing touch with the reality that originally made her such a good leader.

She knows best… like threatning the saftey of the fleet ( and civilians aboard Galactica) cause she’s pissy over the shame, overthrow, or death of her boyfriend. Thretning to go on a rampage, instead of handling fleet bussiess for the same reasons. She knows best by saying it’s my way… or we fight a civil war… when the issue is just power. ( not like they are fighting over settlement on New Caprica this time, it’s just her and her boyfriends jobs/ lives). Noit really noble of her.

Her pride and anger made her endanger the fleet. I don’t mean indirectly… I mean directly. paraphrase a peace of horrible acting ( her only shatner acting of the series- I think other than these scene she is an amazing actress) “I will blow up the fleet’s primary protector in order to make sure that my boyfriend is avenged and that you don’t win” Not Noble at all.

None of that is worth endangering the fleet over.

My argument is that she was once a great leader, then she was a hallucinating leader, then she was a spirited leader, and now she’s kind of off the charts and is no longer a very good leader at all, in no small part due to her depression and feelings for Admiral Adama.

That being said, a President who threatens a rebellion with force and intends to use it is well within their rights to do so; if anything, she is holding the fleet together when Zareka nd Gaeta would split the fleet by separating the entire race of humanity into “with us” or “against us” parties. In the end, the winner is who is right, not the person who has the higher moral ground.

She’s a dictator, for sure. You can be a dictator and still have supporters who agree with your decisions. And dictators are not always egomaniacal. They can listen to reason if and when they wish to do so. That last point is key…IF they wish to do so. Roslyn’s actions are based on what she feels/thinks is right. Sometimes, she’s correct. Point is, she is influenced from who and what she likes, when she cares to listen.

I have a question though (apologies if this has already been debated): could an elected president, with checks and balances, actually work in the current state of affairs? Or would that elected president eventually become a dictator or be overthrown?

In Political Right vs Left really comes down to a few Questions.

Do you believe that the Government has a responsibity to serve the people’s wishes ( which may include their needs if they so wish)?

                             OR

Do you believe a government has a responsibility to serve the peoples needs ( weather they wish it or not)?

From there you get the debate of “Who determins what those needs are”. (You can’t say , “common sense”, somone must be the pointman of articulateing what those needs are.) Which is were political strife comes from.

The argument against democracy is that people are stupid and will vote selfishly and the greater good isn’t acomplished.

The argument against the other spectrem is, what if the mouthpece for your society is Hitler… and the “common good” is really just his feelings.

So can the fleet make it with real democracy?

What would they probably do? Cast asway the Cylons… and vote on everything under the sun. They would loose the efficiancy of dictaorship, but gain teh humanity of freedom. Is this bad?

We don’t know that they aren’t a system away from a habitable planet. We don’t know that brother Cavil is comeing to kill them and knows where they are. WE JUST DON"T KNOW! So as a principle it isn’t AUTOMATICALY bad to have a democracy for the fleet.

It’s a fundemental question… do you want to live under a dictator or POTENTIALY die with a life of freedom.

I ask you to ask yourself this. Are you one of the people that say you have to have a bad leader in there, becuase safty of the fleet and race is more important than personal freedoms during a war?

Ok take a second and answer that for yourself. If you answered yes, do you think that the US President haveing our office ( i work for the DoD) violate your rights to listen to your phone calls in the name of tracking terror subjects is ok? Or imprisoning a guy in a navy base in SC for two years with no trial was ok. Since HE felt that it was in the best interest of the nation during a war?

It’s ok if you do. Many believe ( the NSA CONFIRMS IT) that internment of the Japanese succesfully shut down the Japanese spy opperations within the US. MAny people say… that’s just war… that’s what you do. I ask you to apply it to the real world and not a fantacy show and tell me if you feel the same.

Do yo uwant to live in a country where the ends justifies the means?
My grandma is german. Her brothers all got great jobs at the bank after the Jews were put into camps. Holocust was working for their greater good. Doesn’t make it right, or even best.

All dictators have supporters that agree with them. They cannot exist without this (which makes dictatorships really a committee, quite like a monarchy (which is a dictatorship and as such not its own form of government)).

Since there is no Judicial Branch of the government that we have ever seen they don’t really have a true check and balances system as we know it.

We’ve had presidents lock up elected state officials as well because he feared that they would do what the people of that state wanted them to do.

Again though, what freedoms are the people of the fleet losing here? I mean, what freedoms were they told that they could practice without fear of the government coming down on them while they still had the Quorum and a regular president in place?

People say freedom is freedom. While I agree with that I think we can all agree that we are only allowed to practice certain freedoms without fear of government reprisal here on our Earth. No one on this planet lives in a truly free society.
