Yeah, it rocked! Lots of viper action and explosions.
Yeah, he’s really spot on. And he excells in ep. 3. All the action doesn’t hurt either. Retro cylons, exploding battlestar. Husker rocks!!
Chuck,
Might I suggest that we have one thread for all of the flashbacks instead of a seperate thread for each of the two minute episodes.
Alex
And yes, the battle sceen was great, especially with showing the original raiders. I’m interested in seeing how the original Centurions move. Will they look like a robot or a guy in a metal suit?
I was more interested in what the OG Raiders where shooting. They sure looked like some kind of energy weapon to me.
I gotta say… seeing the Original Series designs of both the Raiders and the Base star was probably my favorite part of this weeks minisode… Actually makes me appreciate TOS (as campy as it was…) I wonder if the frozen planet was a reference to the Original episode Gun on Ice Planet Zero…Looking forward to the rest of the flashback… and Razor… and season 4… it needs to be november NOW!!!
I’m totally jazzing on the old skool designs in the new CGI.
Wow. I can’t wait to see that on the bigger screen. I hope it’s not all the action we get.
To me, one of the hallmarks of good fiction is when it puts you in doubt about something that you’re certain of. Like, I’m pretty sure Husker survives and goes on to be a leading character in BSG. But at the end of this clip when his fighter gets clipped, I thought, “Whoa, holy geez, he’s totally dead.”
That whole scene just reminded me of Maelstrom where Young Adama’s reactions were rather similar to Starbuck’s dialog as she chased the phantom.
Me too! Flying through the clouds looking for raiders was definitely a callback to Maelstrom. Except for the lack of an actual maelstrom in the clouds, it was all there!
I thought the maelstrom in this case was the death and destruction above where the Columbia bought it?
I’m actually a little bit concerned to see so much action in the minisodes because these or “deleted” scenes from Razor, right? Does that mean we aren’t going to be seeing much space combat in the actual release?
Some recent commercials have shown Apollo ordering the nukes aboard Pegasus armed. I suspect there may still be quite a bit of action in what airs.
I was reminded of Maelstrom too ! And did you see the way Columbia went up ?! They must have hit the weapons storage decks or something…It was great to see the old model ships in flight, even the big ol’ round basestars !! This minisode was an incredible, almost unbearable tease !!! I need a cold shower and some quiet time…
I certainly thought the minisode was (in the parlance of Chuck) ‘awesome’. It did raise a couple of questions though:
-
It was great to see the old style cylon raiders impeccably recreated, even down to the blue blaster style weapons. However, aren’t the ‘beams of light’ weapons kind of incongruous with the new BSG which uses balistics and missles?

I was also odd to see a battlestar named ‘Columbia’. Typically names and references from the series harken back to Classical and Anchient periods of Earth history. Instead Columbia obvious is derived from Christopher Colombus and is specifically a poetic and historical reference to the USA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_(name)). Is it used here simply because it is a name the holds ‘gravitas’ with the audience, similar to the way ‘All Along the Watchtower’ evokes a song that most people know, but we are not supposed to literally believe that there is a Bob Dylan in both universes. Or instead is this a reference to later Earth history that may actually have some relevance to where the plot line is heading?
1.) I don’t think these were lasers, I think they were tracers.
2.) The original 12 battlestars where named for the twelve colonies, but there were also others that were made. I think the mini-series indicated that more then 30 were destroyed. Also, while here on earth, Columbia is a derivative of Columbus, who is to say that someone equally famous wasn’t named something similar in there universe…
I agree though, I was extremely excited to see the OG cylon ships and base stars…
I would love to see Dirk Benedict flying in a viper… just as a homage… They could give him a different call sign… or he could be the “original” starbuck. Who is to say that they don’t re-use call signs.
I found an explanation on Battlestarwiki (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Columbia_(RDM)) that suggests it’s possible that Columbia derives from ‘columba’ which is Latin for dove or pigeon. This might explain it, however Battlestar Dove or Battlestar Pigeon doesn’t really seem like names that would strike fear into the hearts (or would it be motherboards?) of the Cylon. Just a thought…
