TNT is very different from a more niche cable channel like SyFy(llus), Falling Skies seems perfect for an audience that wants a show with only a touch of SciFi. Something that does not require a lot from the viewer in terms of learning a lot about a new world and the rules and technology that go with it.
Falling Skies takes place on present day Earth, which makes the setting more familiar and less fantastical than an alien world. And the characters are everyday people thrust into an unusual situation, no superpowers or wacky technology are introduced right away so there is an easy learning curve for the viewer. Plus the show is very good about balancing the action with character relationships and good familial bonds. The writing is pretty sound and the action is believable and not over the top, the characters seem to be the focus and not the invasion itself which makes it a good fit on a channel that prides itself on character driven shows.
SGU ‘nuked the fridge’ very early for me and besides it never felt like a Stargate show to me, the dynamic was all wrong. It had none of the humor that was so important to the first two series and there were no likable characters for me, therefore there was no emotional investment for me. And if I do not care what happens to anyone there is no reason to watch. And so I stopped.
Caprica came at a bad time for me so I never got into it. I will probably burn through it in the near future watching it on DVD. Which is my usual M.O. anyways, I hate watching TV so I usually watch everything either online or on DVD.
