Push

I just got back from seeing the movie Push. I suddenly am now much less into Heroes. I think a series based around Push would be much more compelling.

Ill quote from Wikipedia to give you the best view of the world

During the Holocaust, the Nazis tracked down people with paranormal abilities, which would prove hereditary and began testing medications to enhance their abilities and use them as weapons, many died. After the war ended, these people were sought by the world’s governments, and organized into intelligence and regulatory agencies known as “Divisions”. Over the course of the next fifty years, these Divisions experimented upon and catalogued these individuals. By the present day, the only remaining Division is the one run by the U.S. government, all other Divisions having been destroyed in the course of the Cold War or subjugated from within. These individuals are categorized thus;

* Movers have telekinesis; they are able to move objects, including living organisms, without touching them. Sufficiently skilled movers can apply this force as powerful blows capable of shattering concrete, and produce shields that can diffuse damage and even deflect bullets.

* Pushers essentially have mind control ability. They can "push" specific thoughts, memories, and emotions into their targets. This technique can be used to gain a subject's trust or to make them perform any action, even suicide, without question. Skilled pushers can implant complex histories into a subject, convincing them that an ally murdered a loved one, or that they are actually an ally themselves.

* Watchers are precognitive; they experience visions of the future and typically record their visions in sketch books. Watchers can read a target's intentions, meaning that they can know what a person has decided to do before they actually do it. The future is typically not static; when a watcher becomes directly involved in the events he or she foresees, those events tend to change more rapidly. A Watcher's skill is primarily rated by how far they can see into the future and how well they interpret these visions.

* Bleeders have the ability to emit high-pitched sonic vibrations that can inflict intense damage on living tissue and inanimate objects, either as an area or precision attack. The Chinese Division bred a significant number of these individuals, who overthrew their handlers and now conduct themselves as a powerful organized crime family.

* Sniffers possess either clairalience or clairsentience. By either smelling or touching an object, they can see either the object's history or the current whereabouts and activities of the object's owner. Depending on the individual sniff and the situation, he or she may see images related to the target or they may receive a directional sense of the target's location.

* Shifters can transmute objects on a temporary basis. The object remains in its changed form even when no longer in the shifter's possession, but it will eventually revert (for example a one dollar bill a shifter changed to a hundred dollar bill could stay that way for hours).

* Wipers can erase memories. They can erase specific events or specific durations of time. These erasures can be used as a defense against a Watcher's clairvoyance, as they can only perceive actions as a chain of events - if a target forgets his motivations, his actions can no longer be predicted.

* Shadows are able to shield an area from detection via other powers. It is generally believed that a shadow can only block detection by sniffs, but it is discovered that a sufficiently powerful shadow can also hide a target from watchers.

* Stitchers can perform psychic surgeries, instantly repairing or inflicting lethal trauma.

The movie centers around Nick who is a Mover who is living in Hong Kong trying to lay low from the Division when Cassie a Watcher knocks on his door and says he has to help her find a case and that its important and could bring down the Division. The movie is basically trying to do that. I dont want to give away spoilers. So that is a very very basic story line. really its like my 3rd grade book report overview.

What i liked most about the flick is how they use the powers.
The Moves have probably the best use of TK that i have ever seen. Much better than any Jedi has ever used. When they throw a punch they enhance it with TK. They can block all bullets. They use guns like they are remote controlled planes. This movie had one of my favorite TK battles i have seen.

The Watchers can only see the current future and some are much better at it than others. What we saw in the movie is that they draw the future but dont always know what they are seeing. Also their ability does not make them artists. So if some one is bad at drawing it will make it much harder to undertand what they saw.

I really like that the main characters are not really the best at what they do. They have the potential to be great but at the time in the movie they are just are at times barely functional at their skills.

And what i like best is that they don’t explain the world. It is just the world they live in. They have powers but are not questioning that they have them. They understand how everyone else works and just accept it. They really dont make a big deal of having their powers its just another part of their lives.

On a side note. I think Dakota Fanning is great in this movie. She is one helluva actress. Next Jodi Foster i think.

It was a better movie than I thought it would be. Dakota Fanning was funny as the weirdo pre-teen goth-like girl who can see but awfully draw the future. I just hope this actress don’t go Lindsey Lohan later, she’s really good.

The only thing that almost killed the movie for me was the flying guns by the movers. Even if you could move a gun by telekinesis trying to shoot it in a different angle would give you no accuracy. But it bugged me for other reasons as well. Probably like talking babies freak me out, this didn’t agree with me. The lingo thing bugged me a little too.

But it was interesting. I wouldn’t replace heroes by it. But there could be some potential for a series.

I actually like the moving gun thing. I think in the hands of a good Mover it would be just as accurate. It just so happened that the main guy wasn’t very good at his job.

I kinda liked the lingo. It helped set a defined world were the special people were kinda normal run of the mill people who just had talents.
