So I’m going to be out of the country (the country being the United States) for nearly 2 months starting this month, and I’m realizing how heavily I now depend upon streaming video for my media consumption. I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advice for using proxy servers to view content released in the US? (I’m mostly thinking of Netflix… I’ll have time to watch things! But if I can’t access my account, well then on hold it goes. Tangent: last time I was abroad instant view wasn’t really a thing at all, and I just suspended my account until I got back.). Any and all suggestions are welcome, and thanks in advance for your wise and ever-ranging knowledge, o Hive Mind!
Dont know if it would be effective for viewing outside of the country but the easiest way is probably to setup Tor in your browser. It will handle all the proxy selection stuff on its own for the most part. If you have a personal site you might be better off using VPN, assuming your host allows it and their servers are located stateside. Guaranteed someone here has more knowledge on the subject than me as its been years since Ive done more than basic networking.
I looked into this pretty extensively as I’d really like to watch BBC’s iPlayer. (Hell, I’d pay a license fee if there was a reasonable way to do it, but I understand why there’s not.)
The bad news: streaming video is large, even by today’s standards. So you’d have to work with a for-pay VPN proxy site – a person or business who’ll allow you to VPN to their server then proxy you out. There are a few businesses that offer this kind of thing, but because it’s a black (or at least charcoal gray) area legally those businesses tend to be shady – not really the kind of people to whom I’d feel comfortable giving payment information.
Even then, it’s an uphill battle from a technical standpoint. The proxy provider needs an Imperial (think Vader) ton of bandwidth in and out to host more than a couple of connections. And that makes them pretty easy to spot, and easy for the content providers to blacklist.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
I’m with the licensing fee - if only it were an option. Sigh. I know there are business/profit reasons to keep everything geographically separate but it’s a royal pain in the sorrybarb!
