Somewhat spoilery scene from early on in the episode, along with a brief, non-spoilery interview with Jane Espenson about BSG, Caprica, and comics.

Thots:
Concerning the pictures…

-It looks like the “restaurants shaped like food” scene from the YWKTT clues is falling in this episode, and apparently not in the brig like I thought. It had a very “last confession” feel to it, so I assumed it would take place as Gaeta was awaiting execution or something like that. Guess not. But then, how does Baltar get back to Galactica? Do Roslin and the Cylons send him as a negotiator (which would be risky but deliciously ironic)?

-Gaeta and Zarek in Adama’s quarters. It looks like it’s the “shove it up your ass” scene from the Canadian promo or something similar.

-There appears to be a new Six wandering around in a white dress. I was very confused by the picture of a Six appearing to be Natalie being linked to Baltar on the “Who Frakked Whom” chart, but maybe it was this Six. Hmm…

As for the Promo…
-Chief is so smart to have stayed behind. He knew the Cylons wouldn’t leave without him.

-Baltar’s self-preservation-mode kicks in in full force and nearly bites Roslin in the backside–big surprise.

-Yay, Hotdog! We knew we could trust you. Mostly, because apparently you’re too clueless to notice a full-scale mutiny going on around you.

-Tactically speaking, Roslin has a good plan. However, she’s taking a very ironic risk: putting the human fleet at risk to save the baseship. Who would have ever thought that would happen?

-Nothing on the firing squad. Eep, is it Friday yet?
Fun Espenson interview

It’s funny that they keep talking about Caprica being aimed to get more female viewers - because EVERYONE I know IRL that watches BSG is a woman (with the obvious exceptions of my father and my spouse).

I often hate that the folks that make shows think that they have to make a show sappy or full of heart wrenching relationship drama to appeal to women. I kinda feel they sell you gals a little short.

What about just make a good show, and smart women ( and men) will like it. Be sappy and follow the neilson box of a few dumb chicks ( CW style) … and the normal women and all men will tune out faster than you can say holy frak!

Indeed. Nothing irritates me more than sappiness—even focusing on romantic relationships gets annoying when it detracts from platonic ones. And most of my female friends are equally broad in their tastes on shows…I’ve seen a movement called “Not Your Demographic” about campaigning about how women don’t actually like what the media says they “should”.

My wife absolutely hates pretty much every show aimed at women. She loves BSG.

Iiiiinteresting, the Not Your Demographic thing. I must check that out.

I don’t mind sappy moments which are non-romantic. I also love romances which spring from long tensions built through banter and friendship. Other shows I put in my Love category with BSG are West Wing and Home Movies. Each is a very, very different show, so I guess it’s more about quality, success in achieving what it’s aiming for, and good acting.

Quality over dogma. What will they think of next?
