Politics/New Truck/Fuel Price Discussion

Found a politicol party I didn’t hate-Libertarians.

Boxy, it doesn’t matter which political party you end up choosing. I’ve decided I’m going to vote for you when you turn 35 regardless.

Nah, I wont do that. I don’t think I’ll ever hold public office unless the major parties significantly change

Perhaps I’m just cynical, but just wait. I’m sure political parties excel at alienating people who would vote for them, major parties or not…

I have found that pretty much ALL politicians are just about worthless. The only thing you can really do is try to vote for the ones you think will do the least amount of damage. Personally, I am a strong advocate for the least amount of interference from the government—which is notoriously corrupt and incompetent—in our daily lives. I don’t really need my life micromanaged for me. I think we really need term limits for the House and Senate. I won’t name any names but I look at some of these senators’ earmarks and I just want to puke.

When you get old enough, remember to vote. Not enough people do.

I went to listen to politicians speak to know who to vote for. That is why I am behind on posting my replies.

An agent of of change, you must be. Follow your destiny, you must. Commas in the middle of sentences, Yoda loves.

You sound perfect for politics. The ones that want the job are the ones I worry about.

You can donate it with the stipulation that they make it available on that site. Send it to the university’s Alumni Relations office because they take gift stipulations very seriously. They will pass it to the library and make sure that some poor work-study kid scans it all.

I HATE the two-party system and I hate how structurally sound it is! It will be extremely difficult for another party to rise at this point. Sigh. My love/hate relationship with the First Amendment kills me. Our political system has SO MUCH potential and so little payout.

Word. That would be great. The problem is, who would have to vote for that legislation? Um… current House and Senate members. Right.

Its the only way, multi/three party systems all eventually crumble.

I dissagree, i like the current term limits. Also it wouldnt get through, it would have to a constitutional amendment, taking 2/3 of both house and Senate.

Um… there aren’t any term limits right now. What Lucky (I think) and I meant is that a Rep shouldn’t be able to be in the House for 26 terms of 2 years each and that a Senator shouldn’t be able to be reelected over and over and over a la Robert Byrd or Strom Thurmond. 2 years and 6 years are good lengths of time, though.

Term limits have the bad side also. In my state they do have limits and it seems just as they get good at the job they have to leave. I do understand the problem but you can always vote them out.

That is just plain wrong and I have no idea how you get that idea. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages.

It’s very hard to do with the House of Reps, particularly, because of the proven incumbent advantage. You’re right that extreme term limits (like VA’s 1 term governorship) have their own problems. I’d have to study this more to be sure, but I think that maybe 20 years max in the House and 24 years max in the Senate would work for me.

I’m generally against term limits. Politics appears to be the one place where the people don’t want they’re leaders to actually have expertise. I’m sure plumbers, lawyers, and teachers would bring good perspective to medical profession, but I don’t want my surgeon term limited out…

Wow you could have a full career with that many years. That is not what I thought you meant by term limits. The problem is the voters have to know what is going on. If the politician is not doing their job then they should be voted out. If they are good why not keep them.

I am helping with a campaign to unseat an incumbent. The incumbent is so bad we are not sure if he will make it to the election (he may be arrested first) so I know what you mean.

It’s a fascinating topic, and naturally a complex one. I supported them back in the day, but it became clear that at best they empowered the staffers, who would become the real institutional memory in a term-limited system. It still makes sense for executives, thoughs.

As for surgeons, they are actually part of the same problem. The medical profession is even worse in that regard. The shortage of medical professionals is largely because passing grades et al. are limited to keep supply low, resulting in large demand.

Naturally, this is US-centric. YMMV.

I think I might be buying a new pickup. Brand new. Flex fuel. $460 payment a month. Damn - I hate making major decisions like this!

How many miles will it take for the expense of a flex fuel vehicle to pay off/start accruing savings?

Not sure on that. I’m getting 13 mpg in town at $4.099 per gallon now on my 2004 1/2 ton. Even if I get the same in-town mileage, E85 is only $3.30-something a gallon. So I’d be saving about $16 per fill-up immediately. And I have factory warranty…
