Paint over torn drywall

I was removing a wallpaper border from my daughter’s bedroom. I want to paint her room. Anyway, during the removal I torn some of the drywall. How do I repair that? Is there something that will go over it?

Thick paint? Wait - I wonder if you could just use some joint tape and joint compound on that area and then sand it smooth to blend in with the non-damaged part and then put a good base coat over it? I bet that would work!

'talos, ping Chuck or Sean. They will hook you up.

Wouldn’t you just spackle it?

That’s what I thot. I was wondering if that would work. Will the spackle bubble up or lay flat? I’m not sure and I don’t want to play and make it worse.

'talos, you should post a picture to help the conversation with something like a dollar bill next to it so we know what we are talking about and how big.

Then mail the dollar bill to whomever gives you the most convincing answer.

Spackle it. Let it dry. Sand it down. Paint.

^ Word.

Get yourself a good putty knife, but make sure that it’s at least as wide as the area you would like to cover. When you apply the spackle, jam more than you think will fit in there* and then use the putty knife to smooth it out and remove the excess. Let it dry for a couple hours and sand it down with some 200-grit sandpaper. Depending on the depth of the area you’re filling in, you might need to apply a second coat since the spackle will shrink as it dries. Once it’s filled in and sanded down, you’ll have a level surface over which to paint.

It doesn’t need to be filled. I did not open anything up. While removing wall paper, the top layer of drywall came off. The layer underneath drywall is flakey and not flat.

Will the spackle cover the cardboardy stuff? I guess I should post a picture.

'Talos - you realize that if your wife was in charge, she would have already called in someone to fix it and the room would already be painted? :stuck_out_tongue:

Truer words never spoken.

Yes, it will. From what you’re describing then, a single application should be all you need. Unfortunately, even the smallest container of spackle will be way more than you need, but it shouldn’t cost much.

Tried on a little spot. Worked great. Thanx everyone. Now, I gotta get the rest of the wallpaper off. It is a bitch. I gotta pick up a steamer.

Do you have an iron?
