I found this webseries on youtube a little while ago. Out with Dad is a Canadian made web series about two girls, Rose and Vanessa, dealing with the decision of letting families and friends and even each other know that they are lesbians. The series keep it real and minimize preachyness, instead it focuses character’s journey and relationships/interactions with others and the episodes are usually short and fun.
It shows how families with different values might approach the situation differently and how that would affect the person going through discovering self-identity. It also does a good job in showing just because parents are accepting of their children being homosexuals, it doesn’t make come out will be any less difficult. And parents need to let their children decide when and who to reveal to.
One of the really fun scene is the realistic portrayal of Rose’s single father trying to just let his teenage daughter know that she can come talk to him. The main dad character in the series is one awesome dad. Seeing him trying his hardest to navigate the awkwardness and get his message through to Rose is really sweet.
Granted this is nothing like most of the shows discussed here on GWC, but I really enjoyed it. And reaffirmed my belief that web-series can generate meaningful and entertaining content even without a writer strike.
