Is anyone else watching this show on BBC America? I spent all day this past Monday watching all 8 aired episodes back to back and I am officially hooked. This show is my new obsession and the only show I like more that is still on the air is Game of Thrones.
The premise is that a woman witnesses another young woman commit suicide by walking in front of a train. The catch is that this woman looks exactly like her. The young woman, Sarah Manning, decides to assume the life of this other woman at least long enough to get a hold of any money she might have, only she finds herself caught up in a deadly mystery involving her, this woman and also includes 7 other identical women (so far) around the world while also pretending to be the dead woman to the woman’s boyfriend and at her job. It’s got this involved conspiracy that is slowly unraveling that reminds me of the earlier years of The X-Files but doesn’t appear to be government related. There is also a bit of a body modification thread involving a group calling themselves Neolution and implants that for me has echoes of the Deus Ex franchise (and this really caught my attention because Deus Ex is one of my favorite video game franchises ever).
The lead actress, Tatiana Maslany, is phenomenal. She plays so many different characters (so far she’s played 6 different characters) it would be hard to tell them apart if she didn’t give them all personalities (and in most cases mannerisms and accents) so different that it’s not hard to tell them apart. I’ve even managed to find myself liking some of these women more than others. She has already received a Critic’s Choice Award nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series and as much as I love some of the actresses on other shows, she truly deserves the award.
I highly recommend this show to any sci-fi lover, especially if you enjoyed the conspiracy plot of The X-Files. Two thumbs way up for this show.
