Nuclear power debate

If you make 8 gazillion dollars a minute on coal, why not just keep paying a little of that to the media and the politicians to keep people scared of nuke and convince us that they’re working to clean up coal.
The media and gov’t are doing a good job of keeping people dumb and distracted, where’s their motivation to do anything better when we care less about where our energy comes from (and the harm it may cause) than we do about who got voted off American Idol?

new plan, learn from the Klingons and kill the dude who keeps clicking on them earthquake/volcano/meteor buttons.

A lot of people pronounce it “noo-CLEE-ar,” but I say “NUKE-you-lar” all the way. Where’s the poll field?

From CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/14/japan.us.navy.radiation/index.html

Tests detected low levels of radioactivity on 17 U.S. Navy helicopter crew members when they returned to the USS Ronald Reagan after conducting disaster relief missions in Japan, the military said Monday.

No further contamination was detected after the crew members washed with soap and water, the Navy said.

Nothing about anyone being ill though.

I say it the right way. You know? Nuclear. d:

Now, there are three plants having trouble…

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/14/japan.disaster/index.html?hpt=T1&iref=BN1

Friday’s earthquake and tsunami led to problems at three nuclear power plants, one of which remained a serious concern Monday as crews continued a seesaw battle to control a damaged nuclear reactor complex.

In Fukushima Prefecture, an explosion in a building housing the No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi plant injured 11 workers. Hours later, cooling problems at the plant’s No. 2 reactor allowed nuclear fuel rods to overheat and generate radioactive steam that officials will have to vent into the atmosphere.

Crews thought they had the situation under control, but water levels dropped dangerously again Monday night when a buildup of steam prevented fresh seawater from entering the reactor chamber, Tokyo Electric Power Co. reported. Officials said they would be able to fix the problem.

A similar explosion over the weekend occurred in another reactor at the Fukushima plant.

Ouch…

Now, to finish the rest of the thread…

Speaking of which, I stumbled across this infographic last night:

It’s everything you could hope for: a terrifying vision of an apocalyptic nuclear accident that kills half the US population, with none of those pesky facts or simple logic to confuse the issue.

Le sigh. :frowning:

I saw that infographic, I think it’s from an Australian company selling iodine pills. Pretty crummy, plenty of folks will see it and think it’s real.

Nice Signature, lol.Welcome aboard hansouix. Oops, you been here longer than me.

The folks here at the cooler are a laidback, likeable bunch of super-nerds as you probaly know.I’ve never heard of comments pulled or warnings given.Reviving old threads is not only fine…it’s probably encouraged. Just don’t swear, and be blah, blah…the normal stuff.

I’m a member at gamespot.com…if you posted on an old thread there, they give ya a warning letter…get five, and they BAN ya ! They’re the most ANAL forum on the web.I’ve got three warnings there…i’ve NEVER swore, and i’m allways polite.
…i made a comment about how touchy the moderators are there, and they PULLED my comment !

           Hi GWC friends !
                                  LOVE ya audra ! :o

Working in the nuclear industry and at an operating nuclear power plant, I see the spin the media puts on it all the time. The most accurate info I think can be had here:

Nuclear Energy Institute: http://www.nei.org/newsandevents/information-on-the-japanese-earthquake-and-reactors-in-that-region/

the wind is now blowing southward, so the radioactive plumes won’t be heading to the US mainland anymore. But that and the vocanic ash will head for where I’m at…

Oh, that’s a relief.

(Seriously, it’s extremely unlikely that you’ll see much change from background radiation.)

100% Fake duder

until one of the reactors loses containment, which is in progress.

I get that people have faith in those concrete domes around the reactor to hold in most of the radiation, even after hydrogen explosions. and the radiative plumes released by hydrogen explosions so far are not a big threat after travelling for a distance.

but it is after an major earthquake, the structures could have damages. they have not yet managed to cool down the reactors, and plant 2 at fukushima is losing containment. Just saying faith in Japanese construction is good and all, but the chance for catastrophe is not absolutely impossible, neither is it neglect-able. there is a reason why those plant workers are risking their own health to try to get things under control. And how the workers are leaving the plant. It all just doesn’t sounds good despite ever hour someone will come out and say everthing is under cotrol.

Really? You don’t say?

I have to agree there. The spokesperson is losing credibility fast. They more they try to sound like they are trying not to cause panic, the more they…well sound like they are trying not to cause a panic…

Near the power plant, current radiation measurement is 8217uSv, which is 8 times the amount a regular person receives in a year (according to wiki, average people reveive 2.4 mSv/year, so maybe 4 times? don’t know which average the news paper used).

The reactors in question are BWRs (Boiling Water Reactors) and those concrete domes are the secondary containment. The reactor is the primary containment. Both are designed for major earthquakes (exact magnitude depends on the location), but of course this was greater than the design basis. But both primary and secondary did hold through the quake.

But ya, #2 appears to have a hole of some size in containment - but should make it easier to cool and no pressure to build…

BBC FLASHNEWS: Japan govt confirms radiation leak at Fukushima nuclear plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. If rain comes, remain indoors first 24hrs. Close doors & windows. Swab neck skin with betadine where thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precautions. Radiation may hit Phillipine at startng 4pm today.

It’s 1:00pm here in Taiwan, it’s about to rain, yeah, i am feeling very safe.
