New Battlestar Movie!!!

Glen A. Larson looking to write and produce new BSG film based on old BSG

I’m sorry but that would be a total waste of money on Universal’s part. Yes it would be more expensive but imagine what they could have done with a feature length, R rated reimagined BSG movie!??

I pretty much totally agree with you there.

Not sure how interested I would be in seeing this… is it going to be the original, campy style Galactica? (Not criticizing, old school BSG fans, just describing-- I like the OG BSG, just not as much as the new one) Since BSG fans tend to be divided, I’m just wondering whether Larson would be able to please anybody with this. And how the hell is he going to tell a saga like this in 2-3 hours, and do it justice, regardless of the style? It would have to be a trilogy, or something.

I’ve seen some dumb ideas, but this one…

I don’t think they would waste money for more than one movie

Really? Really?

After frakking around with the scheduling and distribution of their most popular show, instead of treating it with the respect it deserves and making some decent money off of it by promoting it intelligently, they’re going to foot the bill for a straight-up remake of the old campy one?

I’m kinda pissed with Skiffy this morning.

I must say that I agree with the comment so far.

Why Universal/NBC/Sciffy would even think of turning back the clock on what RDM has created is disrespectful to RDM, David Eick, the actors, etc. and the fans who have been loyal.

Universal/NBC/Sciffy would not know a good thing if it bit them in the sorry Barb.

I wonder if Dirk Benedict is in it? :stuck_out_tongue:

Ruined the show?

I agree with RDM when he says that BSG would not translate well to the big screen. It’s a long form TV show and it works very well as a story contained within the epic scale of four seasons, a miniseries and two TV movies.

Glenn Larson’s just trying to ride the wave of popularity for Ron Moore’s superior version of his story and cash in one more time before he rides off into the sunset. Anyone who would want to revive that cheese-fest now, after the re-imagined version, has not read Lucky’s live blogging on TOS on this site, or otherwise sat through an entire episode of TOS since 1978.

Or is Glenn Larson or Dirk Benedict.

God, this would just be awful. I hope they don’t do it. When I tell people I am a rabid BSG fan they all seem to think back to the original series. Sometimes I wish our BSG had just been called “Galactica” or “12 Colonies” or something that only loosely ties it back to the original.

If they make a movie I will be explaining forever.

My complaints are just an addition to the obvious fact that this story has been told twice and it’s time to let it rest.

Hah! Probably do a guest star like Hatch, with snarky lines trashing “GINO”.

Damn straight. Dresden Files and Journeyman, anybody? These guys are 2nd on my s***list, ‘sides Fox. Who needs more actual science fiction, when you can have more frakin’ Ghost Hunters and wrestling? And whatever oversized creature/natural disaster/stupid horror movie of the week they wanna make. How about plowing all that money you waste on crappy B movies into an original Firefly miniseries?

Sorry… don’t get me started…

Oh, go nuts, Hero. I think most of us are in agreement here re: Skiffy. Its executives seem content to remain the “laughable B-movie of the week” (“Manskito?” “KAW!?”) network with the one surprising, intelligent, critically acclaimed hit on their hands that they don’t know what to do with rather than take that hit and use it as a launchpad for other such intelligent sci-fi series.

It’s like BSG is the new Farscape (which I never saw, but which I’ve run into on several “best shows of all time” lists, and not just sci-fi themed ones): a bit of a fluke (though thankfully BSG will get an ending).

Does anyone have a link to Dirk Benadict showing his ass. People referance it all the time. I saw the promo with he and Katie Sackoff on my DVD and hope that that isn’t what all the fuss is about.

I would imagine that Glenn is interested in doing this because of 2 reasons.

  1. Top of mind, wiht the current series ending it’s all over the place right now.

  2. Mr. Larson is not happy with what RDM did to his concept. He hasn’t spoken much, but when he does he’s not a happy man.

As much as I would love to see some of the action-heavy episodes in the series on the big screen, I see what you mean. Jane Espenson said in an interview that movies are structured more like short stories, while TV shows like BSG can be novels. Especially since BSG is an ensemble show, I think it would be really hard to make it work. I guess Serenity worked, even though Firefly was an ensemble show, too, but Firefly needed some closure that BSG hopefully won’t, and even so, Serenity was very much River and Mal’s story, not a story about the entire ensemble in equal parts.

Count me as another who wishes the new show didn’t have the old name attached to it–because I nearly didn’t watch it for that reason, and as it was, it took me until Season 3 to finally break down and give it a try. If I’d heard the same good things about a show called “Exodus” or “Journey” or what have you that I had about BSG, I would’ve tuned in much sooner. Nothing against the original, but the way the title sounds just doesn’t fit the content of the new show.

It seems like they don’t have anybody running Skiffy that actually appreciates scifi, as evidenced by the craaap they pump out. I understand money and advertising is important… but they don’t really have anybody over there that wants to elevate the genre, or put out a quality product.

I was a devoted fan of the original BSG series in my youth, but that being said, the current series outweighs anything in quality since and makes the older series now almost unwatchable, other than for purposes of nostalgia. The current series took the essence of wht the orignial series could have been and brought it to reality. . Any attempt to do a film based on the original series is nothing but a feeble attempt to cash in on the success of the current series and would seriously degrade the efforts of what have been achieved since 2003.
In the end, the masses would evaluate the Battlestar genre as what hit the big screen as opposed to its small but loyal audience of the current series.
IF the current series were to continue in some incarnation and tone on the big screen then that would be a worthwhile endeavor, but to go back and just rehash the past would be a mistake, a step backwards which would serve only as a backlash at the dark content portrayed in the current series thereby diminishing its meaning and turning it to family friendly fare whih hopefully would pull its head of of the 70s trappings from which it was conceived. Move forwards, not backwards.
That all being said I am sure tha all of us will be in the theaters supporting it if it did come to pass, myself included. I don’t see jutification for a big screen picture in the end though as the audience numbes do not add up. they wouldhave only a Serenity Niche audience and we now know waht happennd with the second X Files film if one waits too long, but not long enough to carry it into a next generation.
Why would Mr. LArson make a backlash film against Mr. Moore’s interpretation? because he can.
Does anybody remember the ongoing battle between the Official 007 camp and the "Warhead 2000, “Never Say Never Again” camp which essentially was a constant remake of Thunderball? sigh Give us NEW science fiction not rehash.

Thanks for reading

Sci-Fi is only in it for the money, that’s pretty much their MO. A new sci-fi network needs to come, we’ve got 5 cartoon networks, two Turners, hell, even 4 women’s, 4 crime and even 2 gay networks, why does Sci-Fi have the science fiction monopoly, especially when they can’t even be trusted with it.

That aside, this is just like Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich announcing a Stargate 2 back in 2006 that would have been a direct sequel to the 1994 Stargate and would have completely ignored (at the time) 10 years of SG-1 and Atlantis. Two little kids gave up on their toy and two other kids had fun with it so now they want it back.

Don’t be insulted by it, don’t take it so seriously, it’s just a TV show, it is a really bad idea though. They should leave the further stories of the old show to Dynamite Comics and let it go because a new movie based on an old cancelled TV show just doesn’t make sense.

When I am king, Skiffy will be first against the wall (or in the Viper tube). Viva la Revolucion!
