need help with short story title from yesteryear

Hello folks,

They say memory is the second thing to go and I cannot remember the first.

I am trying to recall author and title of a sci-fi short story I read when “Running With the Devil” was out on cassette. I can neither recall title or author and just scant plot points. It has been boiling in my skull for a week now and I cannot bring the thing to surface.

Plot point:

Story revolves around aliens observing human warrior subjects they have recovered from earth from different time periods. The implied reasoning is to better understand warfare and its place in human existence. The Earthlings are a Norse barbarian, a Whermacht office taken from siege of Stalingrad and one other that I cannot recall …

I know, sketchy as Disney but I would hope someone else might get a spark. Other wise I may need to comb through thousands ( no exaggeration ) of sci-fi paperback and anthologies in milk crates in our basement.

Help GWC … you’re my only hope.

hmmm … well it is Gutenberg available so I’ll give it a read and see if it hits my memory.

I could have swore it was a short story in an anthology. Perhaps it was an adaption or excerpt … stay tuned.

I remember a part in there where humanity was on trial, and the aliens had people from different time periods.

Hmm … I’ll have to give that one a read as well. I’m not sure if it’s the one I’m thinking of … but sounds worthwhile :slight_smile:
