Muggle Quidditch

I think I remember Muggle Quidditch having been mentioned on the 'cast, and in any case, since I’ve been going on about it in the hangouts, I thought it was time your resident Muggle Quidditch expert create a thread for it. *So here’s a place to talk about upcoming events, revel in the awesomeness that is a non-magical magical sport, or just ask questions about it in general. *

There is an official organization who oversees things and writes the rules, the International Quidditch Association (www.internationalquidditch.org).

The complete rulebook is available at the IQA website, but here’s a quick run-down of the most common questions I get asked:
[ul]
[li]Yes, we run around with brooms between our legs, because obviously, if your broom is not between your legs, you have fallen off your broom to plunge hundreds of feet to your disfigurement.
[/li][li]The Snitch is a ball–which is tucked into the shorts of a person. *Seekers have to “snatch” the Snitch from the Snitch runner without holding/pushing/tackling the runner. *Oh yeah, and the Snitch runner can run/hide/bike/swim/climb trees or do anything you can think of to evade Seekers. *Also, a Snitch snatch is only worth 30 points.
[/li][li]No, Beaters don’t get bats. *They just have to throw the Bludgers.
[/li][li]Tackling is legal and indeed encouraged. *In certain circumstances.
[/li][/ul]

My ulterior motive for creating this thread was so I would have an appropriate place to squee about the fact that I am going to be playing in the Quidditch World Cup this year! It’s this November, held on Randall’s Island, NYC. I’m sooo psyched for this. Even though I know my team isn’t going to advance very far in the brackets, just the opportunity to get the experience playing other teams is totally worth it. Plus, I’ve never been to NYC before. And really, who would pass up the chance to spend a weekend with a bunch of crazy Quidditch players?

Last year my school started its own Quidditch Club. It was met with enthusiasm, and now into our second year, we have about 35 regularly attending members from the four colleges in town. We’ve been to two regional invitationals to date and plan on becoming an officially ranked team next school year. For me, this has gone to some crazy idea to a way to continue to commune with HP fans after the books are done.

I look forward to seeing the pictures and videos. What position are you?

I’m usually a Chaser, but I Seek if no one else volunteers. I also had the fun opportunity to be a guest Snitch for a different team this weekend.

Oh! And I forgot to add that all the games of the World Cup will be streaming live on the IQA site for those who aren’t attending.

Nice, if it fits into my timezone, I’m gonna check it out to see how this sport is played.

Games will be running from 9am-9pm EST, so some part of it is sure to fit in your schedule.

There may be a Quidditch team near you. The school I work at has a Quidditch team: https://sa.rochester.edu/clubs/URQC/about

According to Aragonsgirl, the U of R team is ranked 12th in the nation.

Fantastisch!

The official Quidditch documentary was released today! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K-xgBpQU84

Great film!

Hehehe, the Human Snitch.
Maybe I should try this game as well. After all my ancestors are from the Land of Viktor Krum!

the broom looks like it can cause serious injuries…

Quidditch World Cup is today and tomorrow! Watch the live feed (http://livestre.am/FPZf) starting at 10 am EST. I’ll be watching all day.

UPDATE: Looks like they’re having technical difficulties. Sounds like they aren’t going to have the feed up until the tomorrow, but they hope to have it working smoothly by the time the Championships are played.

UPDATE 2: Aaaaand now they’re saying no streaming at all today, but that the vid of the finals matches will be uploaded later. I’ll keep you posted.

Quidditch World Cup vids are finally up! This is the final match, FL vs Middlebury: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeZV0s9FxBw&feature=channel_video_title. Check out the same channel to see the semi finals (Texas A&M vs Middlebury and FL vs Minnesota). These are damn good games, Quidditch at its finest.

Just learned that the local University here has a Quidditch team, and that they are apparently rather good…
