though the article doesn’t mention this is just phase one of us geeks’ plan to take over the world
I contacted him a couple days ago and we’ve corresponded. I’m onboard.
If they need a CAD tech, I am still available.
Are you frakking kidding me? My kickstarter project for a CD recording project is only a 10th of the way funded and this guy wants to raise money to build a friggin’ AT-AT? I’m sorry to be a hater, but seriously?
It’s a shame money can only be raised for one awesome project at a time. Some day we will live in a world where raising money for TWO awesome projects will be possible!
+1
Why not try raising money for something worthwhile, like cancer research?
People raise money for cancer research all the time actually. There are several foundations and funds for that, it’s even broken down into what types of cancer fighting you’d like to support… breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer so on.
The AT-AT is gaining traction because (lets be honest) few things are cooler than a four legged walking robot that’s used like an artillery battery and troop transport.
I’m a fan.
Okay, I’m gonna do a very geek thing and say this:
I thot AT-ATs were two legged. Aren’t the things that fought on Endor called AT -ATs and the things on Hoth in Empire called Imperial Walkers?
But,anyway,yeah, I think it’s doable.
EDIT : Twitter has informed me that 4 legs = AT-AT, 2 legs = AT-ST
But then WTF is this thing?
Twitter is correct, with the addition that AT-ATs have a nickname: Walkers
But then WTF is this thing?
I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s gonna stop until Sarah Connor is dead.
I remember seeing it on a science channel show. I believe it is a military walker that is about the size of an ATV that can react to its environment. it was shown being pushed to try to make it fall over and it moved its legs to keep its balance. Not sure if it is AI though.
Holy crap, that guy’s in OKC. I could drive down there and help build the thing.
Aaaand as soon as it gets going, it stops.

Seriously, if I were George Lucas I’d be a bit more accepting of fans who are clearly VERY into my work.
That’s a pity. Copyright laws are really messed up. There’s a BIG difference between a stop-motion animated model and an actual working implementation of the thing.
How can you not be flattered that your art has made such an impact on people that they’re willing to spend their own money and time on such a monumental project? Tbh, I’m pretty skeptical that it could actually walk and stay upright, but I’ve always said the person who says it can’t be done shouldn’t interrupt the person doing it. I’d have even put in some welding time on it. You gotta admit it would be a fun environment.
George should have offered donation matching or something.
