Larson/Frazetta/McQuarrie influences

I’ve always been interested in the ways in which the Old Show appears in the New Show.

Glenn Larson, like in BSGTOS, has voluptuous women who were fighters and whose appearance was either defined or mirrored by Frank Frazetta’s and Ralph McQuarrie’s art. We see Baltart’s Balcubine Army as an example of this sort of character, as well as Three/Xena.

Boomer’s attire aboard the Basestar reflects the attire of the Beings of Light from TOS, especially TOS ep where Apollo is “killed”.

Anders is now talking about the “gift of the angels”.

(Which, BTW, I think will be the result of the goo applied to the Galactica)

What other Larson/Frazetta/McQuarrie-isms have you seen which seem important to the show’s development?

You’re comments along with the recent discussion of Dirk Benedict’s rant about a female Starbuck just got me thinking. The original show was actually very progressive in its own right in having female viper pilots. Yes, they were sex objects; yes, they were first viewed with with suspicion by the original male pilots; and yes, the characters were still often burdened by ‘girlish’ dialogue; but they were depicted as competent and vital components of the viper pilot corps. This became especially true with the introduction of Sheba with the appearance of the Pegasus. As far as I can tell this was one of the first examples of women actually flying ships in sci-fi; even compared to other relatively progressive versions of the genre like Star Wars and Star Trek (Leah was bad[sorrybarb], but she didn’t fly the Falcon). Also at this time I don’t think there were any women fighter pilots in the US armed forces (can’t speak for other countries though). This puts Dirk Bennedict’s comments in an even more ridiculous light. Having Starbuck be a woman, and a bad [sorrybarb] pilot at that, is actually an homage to a theme already established in the original show in itself…

Ummm … are you trying to credit Larson with being the first person to put voluptuous women in a visual story?

Does the name Russ Meyer mean anything to you?

Larson did have a certain view of women which he depicted in an artistic way. I’m looking at the art which inspires the shows and looking for real life expressions of it in the show for this thread.

As for the fellow you mentioned, nope, no clue. [Checks Wikipedia] Hey! I did see Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls This URL isn’t out of line with what I mean–except for the birdcage.

Here’s an example of what I mean–if I can get the URL to work

Strong, Amazonian in a way, also sexy. There’s a sort of desperation in the faces and of strength, as well. You can see the flightsuits here are the TOS flightsuits.

The vipers are a much better example–they come on through, both the old and the new. I haven’t a pic.

The Valley Of The Dolls thing was late in his career. Earlier he did this:
