I saw this too - and I’m torn.
Most of the people who commented on the article point out that JJ and crew went to some length to create a new, alternate reality and so then what would be the point of plucking out favorite TOS storylines and, with a generous twist or two, make them “new”?
At the same time, it’s Khan!* I would be intrigued to see how that would play out considering the outstanding job JJ and crew did at casting.
*wow it’s really difficult to type Khan when it’s so tempting to use Khaaaaaaan! instead
to my thinking… the time line did not split until the day Jim Kirk was born. so everything before that is the same…ie… Khan and his people are onboard the Botany bay waiting for someone to find them… might as well be Kirk…
I would not mind a run in with the Planet killer ( and Matt Decker)
or even 'vger…(if they made the movie better…)
I think it totally makes sense that Khan is still out there and potentially could make an appearance that would essentially reflect the original episode (not movie).
The statement that didn’t make sense to me was:
“The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one. And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead.”
I now realize they mean Kirk Prime. I’ll stick to my guns regarding this: As long as the cameo significantly serves the plot (especially if Shatner is going to play Kirk and not another character) then cool.
I have no opinions other than “sequel = yes please” and the fact that I saw Star Trek II for the third time yesterday. The first time it was what frightened me away from Star Trek for years, the second time I had no idea what was going on and only remembered earworms and Spock dying, and this time I’m hoping everything actually sticks
TOTALLY agree
Even if they dont have The Shat in there–they can definitely get away with redoing Space Seed/Wrath of Khan
Yeah that is a good point… to bad Spock Prime didn’t warn Spock 2 to blow the Botany Bay out of the stars when they find it.
I can’t help but notice that in the new Trek there is a scene where Nero screams “SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCK!!!” I couldn’t help but think that was a shout out to all Trek fans that love “KHAAAAAAAAAAAANNN!!!”
(or I could be an idiot)
I agree. In this new timeline Kirk also will find Khan.
Yes, I understood that. Khan is most definitely still floating around out there. My point was, just because he is out there, does that mean that they should find him for the sequel - Star Trek: Khan Strikes Back (for the first time…errr…again)?
Again, as much as I love the Khan story and wouldn’t mind seeing it in a new way, I would still be interested in seeing the second installment of a Star Trek movie with a different main villain. That’s all.
I don’t mind what they do next…as long as there is no drop off in quality.
I was thinking, now that we have met the “new” characters, meeting a familar foe in the ‘new’ universe could be fun… And i could be considered Star Trek II since this movie movie was Star Trek… and Star Trek II = Kahn
They could even cover both Space seed and Wrath in the movie and there by advancing the time period in the new timeline to a point where everyone is used to working together…
I don’t think I’d like another Khan-centric movie. I don’t think we need it, either. It’s been done about as good as it can be done, and the only man who should play Khan has passed on.
That’s about the highest bar in Trekdom. They’d be foolish to try it.
That gets my vote for title.
Agreed. There’s really nowhere to go but down.
I would think a good Klingon story could carry the day here.
I hope that they do a montage in the beggining that says that they will have been together for about three years ( about the soonest I can see us getting the new movie). And I hope that the montage kinda shows us some familure sights. Like new versions of old epiodes. I don’t, however want a movie that is a rehash.
Yeah, I’ve been on to J.J. Abrams’ game since the “Some Like It Hoth” episode of Lost this past season. Hurley isn’t the only one dreaming up a re-write.
If the second installment is a retelling of “Space Seed” (Khan Strikes Back), then the third will have to be about “The Trouble With Tribbles” where the evil Klingon empire is brought to its knees by the Enterprise crew with just a little help from their cute and fuzzy Tribble friends.
I haven’t thought up a good title for this one yet. Return of the Tribble?
Also, I confess another reason that I would be wary of a new Khan is because I saw someone suggest (jokingly, I hope) Wilmer Valderrama for the role of Khan and I died a little inside. I think I’d rather see Kal Penn in that role instead, and that’s saying something.
Totally agree. Just give us character development, action, some humor and good quality and I’ll be very happy.
and Uhura…
I don’t have a title, but I’ve got the theme song:
“Oh, we’ve got Tribbles, right here on Sherman’s Planet,
With a capital T and that rhymes with C and that stands for Cyrano Jones.”
