The father and grandfather of science fiction:
Verne known as visionary and original, Wells known for his social and political parallels.
Which author do you like better?
Good lords of Kobol, if ever a thread needed a Baltar option it’s this one.
That’s like Sophie’s Choice for geeks.
Yeah. Glad you said that. I was gonna spice it up a bit and say they have a facial hair battle.
Honestly i dont think i have read either of them…but i may have. But i would probably say Verne. But I thought Shelly’s Frankenstein was the first acknowledged Sci Fi story
Good lords, man! Fix that pronto.
I just remembered that Wells was a gamer. He wrote “Little Wars” (which is a fun read, BTW. (I think he would have approved of the 4E D&D revision.)) So, that puts him over the top, IMHO.
I’m not too familiar with the term ‘Sophie’s Choice’, but I think it means one choice to the exclusion of the other?
You can like both writers, but who do you prefer?
I suppose a better poll would have been: What is your favorite novel by either writer?, but that would be quite a long list (I’m lazy).
Quantity goes to Jules Verne, but quality to H.G. Wells…very dapper.
I have heard that. For whatever reason, along the line, Frankenstein got lumped into the horror genera along with the mummy and the wolf man.
I don’t think anyone can claim with an certainty who the first science fiction writer was. You can go back to Jonathon Swift, Voltaire, and some elements of Greek myth for that matter.
To be honest, I’m not sure why Verne and Wells were tagged as the founding fathers of science fiction. Maybe because they were around recently (relatively speaking) and the prophetic nature of their work.
Though it’s been a while since I read anything by either of them, I remember enjoying Verne more.
