I don’t know if it has been brought up but this is a must see for any GWCer. I won’t put up a trailer because I went into it knowing almost nothing (about this movie ;)) and it really paid off. Jerome Bixby was a great SciFi writer, having worked on Star Trek:TOS and Twilight Zone among many other things. This was his last work before his death and boy is it a good one. Not only is the script amazing but the casting is also top notch. This is a very simple movie, in the days of the $100,000,000 visual effects blockbusters it schools them in what really makes a movie; the script and the performance. I just saw it on the Netflix instant watch and had to watch it again. It is 90 minutes in a single cabin. No chases, explosions or big action scenes. Just a story that is entertaining and intellectually stimulating. Please check it out if you haven’t already!
Totally agree with everything you’ve said. Not only are there no action scene, but it’s essentially a one-room conversation, and it’s still entertaining. It’s just that good.
Interesting trivia: The majority of the financial success that this movie has had has been attributed to word-of-mouth advertising, leading to people downloading it from the internet and eventually buying it on DVD. Take that, MPAA.
You do have good taste. Sometimes I believe we were separated at birth and other times I think that you, DP and me were triplets. Get out of my head!!!
Let me also shout out John Billingsley who always makes me laugh.
I first heard about this movie on slice of sci-fi. Since it wasn’t available to rent at the time, I downloaded it. As soon as it was over, I got in my car, drove up to Best Buy and bought the DVD. I then went over to my friend’s house and made him watch it.
I love this movie. Any friend I have that I thought would like it has been forced to watch it. It’s low budget, with a cast of either unknowns or “B” actors, has no special effects and takes place in one location.
It is also one of the best sci-fi movies I have ever seen.
On a similar note, I would also highly recommend Primer. Another shoe-string budget sci-fi masterpiece. It’s available on Netflix instant also.
Another film like this that I really love is “The Big Kahuna”. Not SciFi, but good is still good. Basically three men in a hotel room discussing an upcoming sales pitch. I love you Spacey!!!
Probably one of my favourite movies of all time…and yeah, it’s definitely worth it not to know what it’s about going into it, so I’m not going to spoil it at all either for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, but if you’re reading this thread and have yet to see The Man From Earth you owe it to yourselves to go and watch it right now.
Just watched this on Netflix Instant Watch yesterday. Loved it, really makes you think and ponder afterwards.
It’s available on instant watch until Thursday…catch it if you can!
i rent without even knowing what it was really about. plus its got so star trek alum in it . plus it make you think
