James Cameron's Avetar

Yeah, I think you’re right. Looks awesome, but the storyline practically writes itself. I can’t imagine that anyone even remotely familiar with sci-fi in general will be in any surprised by this flick. :frowning:

I just saw a commercial and was looking for an already existing thread for this movie, but the title was misspelled. d:

Anyway, I tried to watch the video, but “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by FOX.”

What did I miss?

I like my SciFi two ways: Stuff that makes me think, and stuff that 'splodes real good. This is definitley the latter

Just saw a long trailer during the Vikes/Packers game and holy crap it looked so much better than the other trailer it’s not even funny. Do want.

after that last cast when the three mentioned the total budget for this thing, really that much money for one movie… It just brings my bleeding heart out just think how many children could have fed…

oh well this thing better be mind blowing

The 1/2 billion budget is not just for the making of the film it involves the marketing as well. And it has one of the most ambitious marketing campaigns to date.

How? I’ve heard of this movie no more than any other coming out. Maybe I just don’t go to the right places or maybe it will amp up in the coming weeks, but this seems kinda low key at the moment. But then I don’t even know what a Scalzi is, so maybe I’m out of the loop.

Does the CGI look a little too cartoonish to anyone else? I don’t mind cartoonish when the entire film is CGI, but not mixed with live action.

RE: Cartoonish, in the first teaser trailler yes. In the new long one? Absolutely not. I’d wager what you consider cartoonish is your brain not getting by the fact that it’s seeing something it usually doesn/t. IE: Blue people riding teradactyls and fightin mechs and ornathopters

Hahaha, no, I’m used to seeing this kind of stuff. I would bet, however, it might have something to do with the trailer and my monitor. I’ll probably see it in the theaters if for nothing elese than the effects.

But I kinda ask myself if doing that (seeing something just for the effects) actually encourages Hollywood to roll out more effects-heavy films with predictable storylines.

Anyone catch James Cameron on 60 Minutes last night? The movie footage didn’t look cartoonish to me. And, he’s been working on (still is) to meet his expectations.

HQ versions available.

I liked the Avatar 10 joke. (: Sean may be right when he said Cameron is some dweeb in the future who traveled back in time where he can be awesome. ^^

Thanks for posting that! The scenes are certainly pretty, though I think they’re too colorful to make you forget they’re cgi. The dialogue sounds childish, but then it’s a Cameron movie. I’ll probably still go see it though!

Don’t make visual conclusions base off a youtube video (or off the air network TV source). In the theater or on Blu-ray, the CGI will prolly look better than you think.

Also, who goes to see a Cameron movie for the dialog? ^^

Holy Crap. Avatar was Amazing. I dont think it was the best movie of the year story wise but everything else was breathtaking. Story wise i would put it on par with The Abyss. I gotta say James Cameron did what he said he was gonna do and i think he did change filmmaking again. I don’t know why people doubt him. He has a helluva good track record.

I caught the midnight showing last (night/today). Your right Story wise it was the familiar, “Dances With Wolves,” or Evil Crop Vs nature and natives story we are used to, but none the less it was a good story. But man visuals were STUNNING!!! I’ll admit I’m some what a CGI hater, I perfer old puppet Jabba over CGI jabba and the like… BUT I fell in love with the 3D and CGI in this movie. The amount of time and heart Cameron put in this movie pays off and shows, (hiring linguists and botanist for the film). Pandora , Nav’i and the vehicles blew me away!!!

Also the end battle was awesome!!!

Honestly I think the CGI depends on what they do with it. For example, the “problem” with CGI Jabba is they’re trying to copy a puppet. They aren’t coming up with the image organically on it’s own. It jsut doesn’t really work. Things like the CGI here is presented as designed, it makes it more real.

Can’t wait to see this.

I saw this today, and I REALLY enjoyed it. Dances with Wolves meets Dune meets Surrogate - but still great.

Michelle Rodriguez will be on Fergusson. I missed Worthington on Conan.

I think saying it’s just “Dances with wolves” is selling this movie short, I thought of Blackwater and the Mid-East when I was watching the movie to be honest.

What with the two holy places and the company doing as it pleases.

I loved it. I wouldn’t say it changed movies, frankly I am not a fan of 3D movies but this was still good.

Theater was PACKED. People were on the floor watching it.

Can’t wait for the DVD.

I saw it yesterday in IMAX and 3D and it rocked! I Left the theater happy and smiling and just in a better mood. I mean sure I knew exactly where it was going but it was done so well I didn’t care. I never saw “Dances with Wolves” so I was lucky enough to not have that conflict while seeing it.

I kinda wished I got a center seat at the theater cause I got a bit of double image from the 3D but a tilt of the head fixed it. There were a few times I almost waved my hand in front of my face to clear the particulates in the air that were on screen.

just got back…not bad…not at all. really strong story and effecs were top notch.

and Neytin is hoooooooooooooooooooot
