Jailbreaking an iPhone help

My friend just got an iPhone 3GS running 3.1.3 firmware. She wants to jailbreak it but has been told that there have been problems jailbreaking this spec. I thot I would ask the hivemind for help in this, since I have no clue what to tell her.

Jailbreaking makes Baby Jesus cry. :frowning:

That’s what you should tell her.

Failing that, it also makes Steve Jobs angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.

So far I know there isn’t a good jailbreak for 3.1.3. They are waiting for the next big update of the firmware before working on a new one. That’s why I have jailbreaked mine with 3.1.2 and didn’t install the 3.1.3 version.
Apple only released that, so that everyone who had it jailbreaked already had to do it again.

In addition to that, the 3G S does something with the NAND that affects how it boots and, consequently, affects jailbreaking. If you were to downgrade your friend’s phone to 3.1.2 (btw, it’s only downgrade on paper, there are no additional features or bug fixes in 3.1.3, it was some paperwork update) and then jailbreak it, it would be what’s called a ‘tethered jailbreak’. It would work great, but if they ever rebooted the phone completely, they’d need to hook it to a computer and run Blackra1n again to get it to leave the ‘connect to itunes’ screen.

tldr; Don’t jailbreak a 3G S, wait 1.5 months, a new jailbreak should come out right after the new iPhone that should hit in mid June.

BTW, Jailbreaking is awesome. It’s astonishing how effective Apple has been at convincing people that there’s somehow something morally wrong with being able to install software you want on your own phone.

Thanks guys. I’ll let her know what you said. I knew the hive would help me out

he doesn’t turn green and get super strong; but his army of lawyers do…

I couldn’t have said it any better myself. Imagine the uproar there would be if every time you wanted to run a new program on your Mac you had to either buy it at the Apple Store or apple.com? Want to download Firefox? No, that’s not Apple approved because it competes with Safari. Want to use a competitor’s phone service (i.e. Google Voice)? Unapproved for no good reason. Want to make a NSFW app that makes farting sounds? No dice – that’s offensive! Want to change the wallpaper, text message sounds (other than a few lame built in ones) or other reasonable things a user might want to do to customize a cell phone? There’s an app for that … but we won’t let you have it. It scares me to think what the electronic world is coming to if you don’t have the freedom to tinker with your own devices!

i jailbroke my iPod touch with 3.1.3 and it works just fine.

Update on my friend’s phone: I told her what everyone said here that there wasn’t a good jailbreak for the 3.1.3 but she tried anyway. No surprise that she couldn’t get it to work. She is going to wait now until the new jailbreak comes out in June. Thanks to everyone that replied on here. You guys are always a huge help

Status change, there’s now a good jailbreak for 3.1.3, ‘Spirit’.

Jailbreaking is the only way to get a fully-functional iPhone, IMO.

Is this a carrier unlock or just a jailbreak?
