iPod Issues

I have decided to come to the hive mind for help because I am at my wit’s end!

To preface this, my system has Windows XP Pro for the OS. My “skill level” with computers is above average but far below the professionals who frequent here. I built my last 2 computers & maintain it with little difficulty. (Ask me sometime the story of WHY I learned how to build them myself!) On to my tale of woe! This may be interspersed with some snarkyness because I am beyond frustrated & my limited patience is at it’s admittedly low, limit!

I recently purchased the iPod Touch, as I’ve stated elsewhere it does not come with a free upgrade to OS 3.0, frankly I feel this is a complete rip off on Apple’s part considering their products are completely overpriced in the first place. But, I digress. Anyway, Wavilyem graciously linked a website that has the upgrade for free. When I went there to attempt this in looking through the comments to find out exactly how to do it, it linked me to another page on the same website. This page instructed me to download some torrent to reset everything. It instructed that I unzip the file, run it to reset & then install the OS file. So I click the link on the first program, it’s not recognized as a torrent. So I go & search for the name of the file itself. I download it & it’s not recognized as anything by anything on my computer. SO essentially as far as I can tell I am at a stall on that part.

Second issue, every time I plug the iPod into my computer Windows wants to install it as a digital camera. I have no idea why, it has no camera on it at all! Normally I just click cancel & am done with the whole thing. It syncs up & I’m on my way. That is until today! I upgraded my iTunes yesterday because my handy dandy apple software thingie popped up stating the new version is available. I hook the iPod up today to sync & it installs the hardware without my telling it to. It now only sees it as a camera & iTunes doesn’t see it at all. So, of course I can not sync! I have deleted it 3 times & it just does the same thing. Installs itsel;f & sits there like a lump!

ARGH!!! Please help!

Here is what Apple says on the issue:

Hopefully this helps! I am going to move this thread to the Hive Mind.

Well I have my 2nd issue, semi-solved. I followed the instructions in answer #8 of this thread. It still wants to install it as a digital camera, but iTunes is recognizing it again. I’ll keep hitting cancel I guess. I found this reponse quite disappointing.

had the same problem and after 2 hours on the phone with a guy from apple,he passed me over to a responsable tech person and been told it s not working with Windows Media Center (XP PRO) and according what he said it’s not plan to do anything to change it.and I can just forget it… he just propose me to send the Itouch back…I m just lucky it does work on my old laptop but it stay quiet annoying!

That is nto customer service. The fact that Apple & Microsoft refuse to work together is not the customers problem, it is theirs. That Apple wants to charge what they do for their products & then turn around & at least attempt to make it work better with the most widely used operating system in the business shows a complete disregard for potential customers. Having worked in customer service most of my adult life, I find is shockingly obtuse & stupid.

However, my first problem remains!

Well, I finally got the Redn0w program to run. However, the file that’s supposedly the new firmware it’s not recognizing.

I really hate to be the wet blanket here, but if you’re already concerned about support and compatibility issues, is it really smart to try and hack your way around the paid upgrade? If you blow it you risk causing yourself additional problems, and you already seem to have suffered more than $10 worth of pain.

Honestly, I’m sure you can handle the workarounds. But is it really worth your time? Or heck, if you’re dead set against paying for 3.0 why not just leave it on the old version? It’s still a workable iPod.

I can see your point Chuck…I really can. However, it pisses me off that I paid $200+ for a product & have to shell out another $10 to make it current. I have also started to run into apps that I really like using that are no longer compatible because they’ve been upgraded to 3.0. And frankly I’ve invest this much time into it…it’s going to work dammit! deep breath sorry, I’m a little stubborn!

OK, now I feel kinda dumb…why do you always have to be so REASONABLE Chuck! I bet you drive Sean nuts!

If you just want to do the 3.0 upgrade, I don’t think you have to jailbreak it with redsn0w at all. Try downloading the 3.0 firmware, connect your iPod, select it in iTunes, then you should see a restore button for if you wanted to restore your iPod to the original settings. I don’t know know which button it is for a PC (probably alt or control), but on a Mac you hold option and click the button to get a file choosing dialog. Choose the firmware file you downloaded and restore using that. Hope this helps!
