Thank you on the congrats, you whippersnapper. You kids today with your boomboxes and ripped jeans…get off my lawn!
Anyway, songs on iTunes without coding mostly came from mixes I used to have on CD. The only thing I knew about them is what the person wrote on the CD itself.
Has anyone ever made you a mix? Is this now a foreign concept for the youngins?
EDIT: I meant to ask originally…any recommendations on Twitter clients? There are like 10 of them.
Here is where the App comes in. Since only the “younglings” can use the computer applications to add it, we don’t see it applied because we don’t like noise in our tunez. The App would allow you to open any song on your IPhone or ITouch and it would apply the “authenticity” as it plays back. Please contact me at uchihadaisuke @ younglingsforcleanmusic.com to send royalties.
Another one that is very fun is Ocarina. This turns your IPhone into a Ocarina by blowing into the speaker and touching finger holes on the touchscreen. For any of the musically inclined this is an excellent app that allows you to have a instrument with you wherever you go. They have a forum where people write the fingering down so you can play some of your favorite tunes. Have you ever wanted to play your favorite classic video game tunes, movie themes or even the song Picard plays in Inner Light. Perhaps we can get Armando to write a GWC theme or an extended version of the podcast opening for us to play?
Ok…brother-in-law made some application recommendations. Here they are and my review of the ones I downloaded (or looked at)
ocarina - Ok, I ponied up for this (and got if for 99 cents…it goes back to regular price tomorrow). With his and Uchiha’s recommendation I had to go in. My wife simply gave me a cock-eyed look as I started blowing on my iPhone. More on this one later
classics - looked at it but didn’t purchase. Looks like a good idea, I just don’t relish reading a book on the iPhone
face melter - Erm…passed on this one. Could be funny once or twice I suppose.
google earth - I had already downloaded this one. Looks awesome.
iTalk recorder - I went ahead and downloaded this as it was free. A voice recorder? Could be useful I suppose.
labyrinthe lite - This was the best recommendation he made if for nothing else it truly shows off the iPhone and is fun. Remember the old wooden board with holes and a metal marble? Here it is again. Tilt the iPhone to roll the marble, you get the idea.
urbanspoon - Good restaurant guide with a fun (if not useless) one-armed-bandit way of choosing a restaurant at random.
tuner internet radio - This sounds like an excellent idea but at 6 bucks seemed a little steep. I’ll check out his at Christmas to evaluate.
A nice internet radio type app is Pandora. If your not familiar it is website that you can create an account and in that account you create radio stations. These stations are based off of an individual or band that you like. Using their software called the Music Genome Project they analyze the type of music that group plays and creates a streaming radio station that you can play on your computer or now the IPhone with their free app. As you play you can rate the songs you hear and using that info it will continue to focus on finding songs that it thinks you like. It is nice if you are the type of person who is always looking for some new tunes or if you are just looking for a change from your everyday playlists and it is free.
Funny you should ask, because I am working through two weird problems:
It seems that the iPhone gets confused when there isn’t a wireless network around for the iTunes/iPod/other apps. It could be that the feed for 134 was delayed to iTunes, but it didn’t show up when I looked up Watercooler…the latest was 133. I solved this by drilling to the blog itself and playing it as a direct mp3 download. I was able to listen to it almost immediately with no interruption.
A flaw that I have discovered with how the iPhone iPod implementation works is that if you are subscribed to a podcast (GWC) and you have deleted all the episodes it doesn’t appear as a choice when you are scrolling through your local podcasts. This is a significant problem when you are looking for the latest podcast by simply clicking, “get more podcasts” and it isn’t there as the entire podcast category isn’t there. Of course a simple workaround is to always make sure you have at least one back podcast for all the ones you listen to…but I loathe a hack.
Pike, I’ll give you a better answer when I have implemented my hack for the next episode which will give me a true benchmark of how long the entire 'cast takes.
Alternately, you could keep a playlist with the shorter episodes of the 'casts that you want to show up. They will show up under Podcasts as well as the Playlist. (Yeah, it’s another hack, but one you don’t have to worry about once it’s set up.)
I don’t think I made much sense the first time around. I’ll try again:
You subscribe to 5 podcasts. If you delete all the back podcasts of one of them when you are looking over your available podcasts you will only see 4. This wasn’t a problem before the iPhone, but now it is…as you can now download them directly to the device. If the podcast isn’t there you can’t simply click, “Get more of (GWC)”
Make sense? The only way I see to work around it is to always keep one back podcast in the queue so the subscription doesn’t disappear on the iPhone when you don’t have any on it.
What I’m saying is: Recently (within the last couple/three updates) a podcast in a Playlist will also show up in Podcasts. So, if you make sure you have a Playlist with a representative episode from each of your important Podcasts, you’ll always have an episode showing in Podcasts, and thus will be able to access the new ones.
I agree with Pike. I use a Smart playlist to keep my new podcasts easily accessible. I set it to allow or exclude the casts I want, then I have it only display casts with a play count of zero. This way I can quickly access the new podcasts and once I listen to them they are automatically removed from the playlist. This also allows me to keep the file if I ever want to listen to it again. Then I just go through and delete them in ITunes or (using the sync only checked items option) I uncheck a cast if I want to keep it on my hard drive and not have it take up space on my IPod.
I downloaded the cast from Itunes and it took about a min (same as my macbook). I tried to download a similar sized episode without any WIFI and it said that it didn’t allow downloads of over 10mb. It did play fine from the blog as Solai said but that speed is only a bit faster than the audio playback.
OK, I’m going to out myself as an absolute phone technology idiot. I’m good at using the phone to call and sms, playing mp3s, organizer, etc, but then when it comes to internet usage on the phone, I’m utterly confused, and am too embarrassed/do not understand the difference between data usage and unlimited WiFi enough to ask the actual dudes selling these plans.
So, sounding perfectly lame, I hope you guys can help. I appreciate any kind of input!
I’m thinking of purchasing an iphone (along with a plan), but am confused on the details:-
the iPhone plan is this:
it comes with a “500MB Data usage” and “Unlimited Wi-Fi”. I’m sorry, but What does that fricking mean? What is the difference between the two things? Does data usage means downloading attachments on emails/email receiving on something like Outlook, or does it mean loading up a website when I go online? If I don’t set up an email account straight to the phone (and say just check gmail online on it, would that be any different?) Is the plan an adequate amount for medium to high usage (i.e. lots of fudging around with fancy new toy phone)? What is the usual usage?
There’s also a separate deal without an iPhone, which offers a 150MB Data usage and unlimited Wi-Fi. (for a cheaper price, of course). I presently have a Motorola Rokr E6 phone(which I got as a gift last year Christmas, but it’s a somewhat average phone) Would this plan even work with my present phone, or would it be like running Vista on an already slow computer? Does my phone even support Wi-Fi? (see, exactly the types of questions I don’t want to ask random phone dude.)
There are also some other phone brands offering up buy in plans. If any of you happen to have come across any of them, how do these compare to the iPhone, strictly on a functionality level? (one big concern:- size of keyboard onscreen. As I’ve learnt, some phones (like mine) have tiny onscreen keyboards that don’t let you flip it sideways and make wider, so one cannot type with one hand proficiently. I HATE that.)
(I’m not in the US, so yeah…)
-Samsung Pixon M8800H
-Samsung Toucnwiz F488
-Samsung Omnia i908
-Samsung innov8 i8510H
-HTC Touch Diamond White
-Sony Ericsson X1
Sony Ericsson G900
-Sony Ericsson C905
-LG Renoir KC910
-Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
-Nokia N85
Or, if you happen to have a phone brand to recommend, please do.
Oh, right. And if I’m not even asking the right questions, what are the questions I should be asking?
Hey Coco, let me see if I can answer a few questions but I believe Pike and Solai know much more of the tech than I do.
First, Data should be anything incoming to your phone that is not a call or text message. That would be Internet browsing, emails, any audio or video downloading or viewing and so on. Since you mention the 500mb data I am assuming you have (what I hear is a joyful experience:rolleyes:) Rogers. I believe your phone uses the Edge system and anything downloaded on that is what they call data. Unlimited Wifi is unlimited usage of what Rogers calls Hot spots so I would assume places like Starbucks and some fast food would be part of that. Wifi is just another means of downloading data other than through your cell signal which is what Edge is. If you have a router connected in your home, when you connect wirelessly that is Wifi also and they can’t charge you for that. You should find some info on just exactly where these Hot Spots are and if you will be around them often. My first month I have only used about 100mb and most people will never use 500mb. The average GWC podcast is around 50mb so unless you are downloading podcasts, video or apps over the Edge network you will be fine with even a lower plan. The speed is also much slower on the Edge than it is on Wifi and doesn’t often work well. Most of the Data people will use is apps, e-mail and browsing which don’t take up much bandwidth.
From what I have found your phone doesn’t have wifi so if you are recieving e-mails or are browsing you are using data and should already have a plan for it or they may be charging you a higher rate on a per usage basis (like when you go over on calling minutes. Let me just say that a plan isn’t like software where there is functionality involved. It is more like a legal agreement that says they will provide a volume of service for a price and if you go over they can charge you a prorated price.
I have to say that the only phones I have heard of that come close to what the IPhone does is the T-mobile G1 and the Blackberry Storm, in that order. I am not sure of the availability of these in your area but I have to say that I am blown away by the IPhone. I also think that all the touchscreen phones all fall a bit short when it comes to keyboard functionality but I am used to it now and I am not a big e-mailer or texter. If you use e-mail for buisness or need to type a lot I have heard great things about the Blackberry Bold.
Having said all that I can’t recommend the IPhone enough. It does sound like you need to try the typing out on one first to see if it will be difficult for you. I would also say that with a year old phone you may wait until the next version of the IPhone especially if you are in a contract now. It doesn’t sound like you need a new phone and if you would get stuck with a termination fee it doesn’t sound worth it (Then again I hear Rogers owns everything so you probably won’t have to worry about changing companies:D).
Finally, I’ll just say, make sure you continue to do your research. It is good to be as educated about these things as you can. An Iphone is a serious investment not only in price but monthly fees so fell free to keep asking questions if you have any. Also, if you have any friends in your are some of the most important info will be how their performance has been, If they have had any drop outs and their knowledge of the local Hot Spots.
Pretty much what UD said. I’ll add a couple things.
It’s important to emphasize that text messaging is a completely different animal than data (or is at least treated as such. There will be a seperate plan for that.
I’m not sure if 3G is an option in your area, but it is faster than an EDGE connection
I have to say that the only phones I have heard of that come close to what the IPhone does is the T-mobile G1 and the Blackberry Storm, in that order.
The Android-based Google phones are out, and from what I hear are very good.
Having said all that I can’t recommend the IPhone enough. It does sound like you need to try the typing out on one first to see if it will be difficult for you.
Yes, I would strongly recommend this. Some apps require you to use the phone in a vertical orientation, and the keyboard is consequently smaller. Make sure you’re comfortable with it in this position.
Uchiha Daisuke did a great summary. Coco, I have one question which will help me put together an answer: From what I read I suddenly realized you must not be in the US…am I correct? Nothing in your profile provides a hint.
I only ask as I have become an expert in the AT&T plan and what you are describing does not jibe with that. As AT&T provides unlimited data I haven’t even thought about how much I am downloading.
