What about the hundred of thousands of non-combatants who died on the Death Star? Janitors, lunch ladies, tech support, clerical workers, etc.?

Does no one mourn for the working stiffs who tried to provide for their families working for, quite literally, The Man? :frowning:

I never get tired of watching that one

Arguably, for the average citizen, was there really that much of a difference between the Republic and the Empire? You still pay taxes. Power is centralized on Coruscant. Instead of Jedi telling you what to do, now Stormtroopers do. And with an all-powerful totalitarian Emperor without a Senate, there’s no need to bother with campaigns and elections, so there’s more time to watch podraces.

That clip never gets old.

Well, to borrow from Clerks… Anyone working on the Deathstar would be in the service of the military, even the jobs no one wants to do would be military personel. The Empire wouldn’t let a bunch of civilians run around the Deathstar.

Well, as long as Clerks says so. That’s canon, right?

In all seriousness, I don’t buy the argument. Civilian contractors are involved in all sorts of military endeavors. Sure, they’d have to have a certain level of security clearance (although I doubt that something the size of a small moon could realistically be considered “Top Secret”), but using military personnel in the sort of low-level jobs I mean would seem to be a waste of resources.

Look at our own Military. Jobs from cooks to doctors are performed by enlisted military personnel. Take my sister in-law for example, she was a dental hygienist’s assistant while she was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. She was in the Air Force.

I miss Cally.

Or by civilian contractors >_>

Me too. Really.

I still stand by my point. I don’t think the Empire would let anyone on the Deathstar, who wasn’t a prisoner, who has not taken an oath of loyalty or been through Imperial training. The Imperials instill fear into their soldiers and officers. If someone fraks up they are killed. Just look at how Vader deals with his subordinates.

I don’t. I really don’t.

You’re not Irish. Cabbage smells like home.

well, I am a green-eyed redhead. does that count?

Cabbage smells like home.

ExacTly. Even in the Empire, the military is necessarily fewer in number than the civilian populace. Jobs that need to be done by people (as opposed to droids) but aren’t mission-critical, militarily speaking, could be done by military or civilians. You’re wasting your Stormtrooper training (such as it is) if all you’re doing all day is mopping or handing out bowls of soup.

Just think about that. What could instill fear more than working on the Death Star? If I screw up, my boss will blow up my homeworld. Can you think of a better motivator for loyal service? Besides which, the day-to-day operations of the base need be no more secure than any other office building (or space station, as the case may be). The power core and the main gun would obviously be staffed by military personnel, but everything else in the station is essentially a very large base, with offices, crew quarters, mess halls, laundry, rec areas, supply closets, etc. You don’t need military training to operate those functions.

She’s waiting for you on the other side of the river, Baltar willing.

Niiice.
