I'm starting to agree with Pike

The Star Trek movie is best if watched the one time. If you really really just want adventure and are glad to have Kirk back, it works… but the more you watch it… it has the plot holes of Nemisis ( just with superior characters). I wish i didn’t like trek so much… then this stuf wouldn’t bother me.

The worse thing you can do for your enjoyment of the new movie… rewatch it. It get’s a little worse with each reviewing. ( I don’t think it ever get’s Voyager, TNG, Spocks’ Brain bad…but it definitly fall farther from being in third place and is falling steadily.)

I think I let my loyalty to Kirk blind me to the holes in this movie. I am normaly the voice of condemnation and I have failed my soul in giving this movie a free pass because it furthered my adgenda of the destruction of Roddenberrys hippy dream world.

The novel explains things… but I watched a movie, I shouldn’t need a book to make a movie make sense!

Oh Pike… why didn’t I listen!!! ( I fall to my knees and bring my elbows together Kirk style) Why! why! why!

It’s a fun movie. Sometimes the worst thing you can do in scifi is pick things apart ad infinitum. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Well said, Pete! In the end it’s all fiction which means if you look at hard enough under the harsh light of reality, it’s gonna fold. (Some more quickly than others, true. But any time travel plot jumps pretty much to the top of the “folds quickly” list.)

True. Another of the thing The GF and I hashed out was that in most other Trek stories, they get the impossible-hand-waving-thing out of the way pretty early. This last movie you spent the first two thirds of it trying to figure out what was going on and why, and got a pretty lame answer for your troubles.

I’ve seen the movie 3 times and loved it all three times. I have no issues with it. It was a kick ass movie that at time made me both laugh and cry. It had kickass effects and I thought all the actors did a good job.

In the end, it’s just a movie. And you’re right it filled all the qualifications for that. It was fun and entertaining…oh…and kickarse.

All that being said… I still liked it. I am not condemning the movie… I am just going back on my idea that it was a perfect movie and all other trek should get down and kiss it’s warp signiture.

I am also jsut acknowledging that while some of the rest of us were talking about it like it was the second comeing of Kara Thrace… Pike was the one that whipped us back to reality in a non hater way. it’s like she had asked “what’s God need with a starship?”

Exactly right. For all its flaws, they didn’t break anything fundamental (possibly excepting Spock.) And they got everyone on the Big E. The next movie is the make-or-break one.

Pike was the one that whipped us back to reality in a non hater way. it’s like she had asked “what’s God need with a starship?”

Exact… wait. “She?”

i appoligize… i don’t know why I thought that. I just did … no offense intended. Wait a min…it’s not an insult to be confused with a woman… so I take it back. I should say, my mistake and leave it at that.

I am probably getting you confused with someone else. I just thought that you said that one time. my bad. I guess I am a crappy listener!

You wear a dress out one time, and all of a sudden you’re a ‘she.’ fumiates

We want Flickr! We want Flickr!

That Flickr pic will probably have to go in the NSFW thread…

remove the probably and you have a true statement.

but you are right the movie had plot holes big enough to drive a dozen Mac trucks through. Also it was a dumb movie. Im generally OK if something is about blowing shit up and gratuitous nudity (ie transformers) but this is Trek, and it didnt have tons of exciting explosions and had no gratuitous boob shots.

I’m trying to listen to the novel right now. It fills in some gaps but tracks the movie script very, very closely so it’s like ‘seeing’ the movie all over again.

I would say it is best if watched zero times.

The series of comics released prior to the movie explain things… or I should say their existence explains things – the movie IS a comic book. Now the quick scene cutting, silly location titles, childish dialogue, larger-than-life characters, dodgy science and paper-thin plot make perfect sense, don’t they?

It made me both laugh and cry too, but for all the wrong reasons.

I think you’re being a bit hard on comic books.

I liked the parts of the comic that were fleshed out things from the movie.

I have only two things wrong with the comic:

  1. Captain Data. With all the instances of little things makeing data flip out… wouldn’t haveing a machine in command of the flagship of the Federation be a bad idea. I truely believe Starfleet would never go for it. ALSO He mentions that he took over B4’s body. Now if the federation has determined that Data is a sentient being… wouldn’t b4 be one as well. If so, wouldn’t that make Data a benevolent enity for aquireing B4’s body? Starfleet rewards this? Would Starfleet let the “taken over” B4 have Data’s rank and position. Could he just “test out” of starfleet academy or what? I think that whole situation is too much personal bagage to give that ship to Data. Ther are no other “Picard-ish” officers who served as commanders of lesser ships that deserve the “flagship” job. I don’t know… maybe Riker, or the Captain of ANY of the ships that won countless battles saveing the federation from the Dominion back in the war.

  2. I hated the whole forest Gump aspect of the comic. Picard is the Ambasador, Geordi designed the ship, Data commands the Enterprise, Worf is the Klingon General and almost get’s killed by Nero. It was all pretty lame.

I bought the trade paperback… I will sell it anyone who wants it! Buy it quickly before i use it to wipe my … well you get the picture!

Also I agree with Missmuffett. I do enjoy it EVERY time I watch it. I jsut don’t like it later when I think about it. So the answer is… keep on watching I guess.

Also… this whole buildup has caused me to go “trek crazy” I am rewatching TNG on WGN ( hadn’t done that since original airing , other than a few episodes) and catch Enterprise on sci-fi, daily.

So I guess it did it’s job.

Yeah, The GF’s and my final assessment is just that: For all its flaws, it did the job.

If its job is to disappoint me, and insult my intelligence, it worked:cool:

but maby i need to see it again
