When it first came out, I was so excited about the idea of a series set pre TOS that my expectations may have been too high–I watched the first couple eps and when “eh” and stopped. In post-Trek movie delirium a coworked tried to convince me that it was actually pretty good…loaned me the discs, and I must admit–I’m totally diggin’ it so far. Anyone have a similar experience or wish to discuss some Ent?
Yeah, Enterprise had its highs and lows. The most frustrating part is that as you get to the forth and last season, you’ll see the show really becomes to come into its own right as it gets canceled…
Soon everyone will know the joy that is Enterprise.
Yeah, Enterprise had its high and its lows…and I challenge anyone to point to a Trek franchise that did not. Overall the show is good and sometimes great. It has some of the best characters and actors and in the end one of the reasons it remains in my top 3 favorite Trek franchises is because the show has heart.
Enjoy!
Just finished season 1 and am impressed by Scott Bakula’s performance as well as the way the characters are developing and growing in a way that I didn’t really see on Voyager (which I also stopped watching, lol). Deep Space Nine is the one I really dig but I’m gettin’ into this one.
I more hated Enterprise for what it wasn’t… than what it was, when it first came out.
I kinda liked the Suliban storyline at first but it get’s weaker as time goes on.
The Xindi storyline , I hated, once it got going, as welll.
BUT… Almost every episode that isn’t tied directly into those two arcs is wonderful. Which is the majority of the series. I think that we remember the episodes that we don’t like, and forget the ones that we like.
Now, I love this series.
In hindsight… there are more good than not ( and I can’t say that about Voyager- and since I DEMAND adventure in my Trek… TNG as well) ) I really really think that in many ways those episodes are better than most of the episodes involveing even the much beloved TNG crew.
I challenge Enterprise haters with this… Almost every episode has adventure. It has a physicaly attractive crew ( not just one per series) , it’s effects looks awsome, It has bad Klingons, it has imperfect humans. It has SHRAN! There are almost NO episodes where they waste our time with a “are these tool droids we have built sentient” -esqe concepts. (Granted they have a few… but nowhere near as many per season as other trek shows. With them being few and far between- they are much better. As opposed to another trek series where adventure and ecitement episodes are few and far between)
It folllows the “REAL” trek formula which was missing from Trek for a few years. The majority of the antagonists in Enterprise being a “space sicknes”, bad guy aliens, alien lifeform, Evil bad guys, or race against time. It has a captain that is an actual classical hero ( not just a leader of heroes) who physicaly does something and get’s his hands dirty.
It’s just one of the best trek show’s ever!
I agree. Definitely in my top 5…
Ha. I’m not on the X story line yet but have been intrigued by the Suliban…although I will say, even though I loved the new movie and I realize Ent came first—but MORE TIME TRAVEL??? lol.
Couple of you seem passionate about it. Fav eps I should watch for as I peruse the remaining three seasons?
I thought this would bring out more ENT fans… I’m onto Season Two. I enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end of season 1, but just watched ep. one of season two, and was disappointed that it wrapped up so quickly…I thought the being stuck in the future Archer had more potential…
You’ve already gotten farther than I did. And I’m an old skool Trekkie.
Keep the reports coming, though.
I was really excited about Enterprise in the beggining, but I quickly realized it was not the show I wanted it to be. Still, I did watch it. When Season 3 rolled around, I enjoyed that a lot more, and thought Season 4 had the best episodes overall. It was almost a different show after season 2.
Fav eps I should watch for as I peruse the remaining three seasons?
I think now that you have finished season 1 and 2, its only going to get better, and you should watch them all.
I started watching it in syndication on SciFi a couple of weeks ago. There are a few episodes that I skip, but, for the most part I really enjoy Enterprise!
I’m about half way through S2 and it is starting to drag a little. I will take the advice of those who say it picks up again in S3 and keep plugging away. I am enjoying it, though, in the wake of post Trek movie euphoria in having some Trek that I hadn’t seen before to watch… and Scott Bakula is let’s face it always pretty entertaining. Not quite sure what’s up with all the Water Polo–lol–
Just rewatched Trek XI on the “IMAX” screen. It was awesome, but anyone annoyed by lens flares on a normal screen will hate them when 40 ft long lol
nope, i have watched the series more than 3 times and still don’t like it. the time war/ zindi / eugenics stuff all fell way short for me. The Vulcan stuff was ok, but rewatch value isn’t that high. but heck, at least i gave it a chance and watched it when it was live, i can’t really recommend it.
good for those who can enjoy it tho.
Three times is certainly more love than I’d give something I didn’t like…you gave it a pretty damn good chance…
Total agreement. Now that I think of it, every ST series (TOS being the exception) had a weak season one compared to their later stuff. Even Next Gen was pretty velveeta at the start.
The biggest failing of Enterprise is in the casting. The guy who played Travis was terrible (like Harry Kim terrible), Malcolm was stiff and uninteresting, Hoshi was eh. Luckily, Phlox, Archer and Trip made up for it.
you know… i tried to not like phlox. I thought he was to be the neelix of this show. He IS NOT. I love that guy. He is a strong character.
also… T’pol skin shots are the bomb for all you lovers of women out there!
I didn’t have that much problem with Neelix either, except for the whole Kes jealousy mini arc in season 2…
Neelix is actually a pretty fun character, with some decent back story. The one about him overing coming his hatred and work with the scientist who created the weapon to wipe out his home planet to try and bring his people back to life was an nice episode…
And without Neelix, Tuvok would have been even dull-er…
But yeah, Phlox was a decent character…
What is with the name “Hoshi” in sci-fi shows?!?
Hoshi (星) means “Star” in Japanese, which is probably why space Scifi shows likes to give Japanese characters that name.
Seasons three and four were by far the best ones of the series. It was great seeing one season long storyline (S3) that was epic and the augment stories (S4) with Kahn’s little brother and the Klingons are two of my favorite trek stories of all time. I only wish that there was a season 5 to see where the show would have gone.
