Hyperion by Dan Simmons

Hyperion by Dan Simmons (click here for a link to Amazon) is a Hugo and Locus Award winning novel and definitively one of the best book I’ve ever read.

The story is modeled after the Canterbury Tales as six people on a pilgrimage to the mysterious planet Hyperion are telling their own stories, trying to figure out what they have in common. On a pure litterary level, the book is amazingly written as each of the six story is told in a different litterary style (philosophy, romance, poetry, history, cyberpunk, …)

This is such a vast and rich tapestry of worlds and characters that it makes little justice to the book trying to summarize it in a few lines. It was followed by “The Fall of Hyperion” and a few years later by “Endymion” and “The Rise of Endymion”.

I recenlty gave this book as a birthday gift to a friend of mine who hates everything scifi-y. She read the novel over the weekend and called in sick at work the next Monday to finish it

The Shrike is the critter shown on the image of the front cover that Yorick posted. It moves in mysterious ways and remains my favorite monster to this day.

Definitely, though when we learn who he really is… it’s hard to still see him as a monster.

I’d still rather go and have a beer with the Shrike than be one of its prey

Warner announced today they acquired the rights to make a movie out of the Hyperion saga. As long as Dan Simmons is involved I’m ok, but it’s a bit of a gamble as the structure of the book (with six separate smaller stories inside) seems a bit difficult to translate on the big screen. Any idea for the casting for anyone who read it?

I really love this book

The whole series is great!

Dan Simmons is a very versatile writer.

Its a good book i finished the first one about a month ago and it really had some truly excellent storytelling elements. well worth a read.
