Hugo and Nebula Awards

Hi gang,

A bit of background first. I don’t have a lot of friends that are serious Fantasy & Science Fiction readers, so over the years I’ve developed the habit of grabbing the list of Hugo and Nebula winners, and using it to guide my reading. I’ll go on Hugo & Nebula ‘binges’, and I love it because I always seem to find something new and cool.

So, I’ve been getting the feeling that another Hugo & Nebula blitz was coming on, and thot it would be great to start a thread around these and other awards. It would be great to share thoughts the books on the list, some of which are beloved classics, some of which have been prior GWC book-club selections, and some which have probably disappeared from print and literally faded into obscurity.

For people who aren’t familiar with the awards, here’s a 2 second summary. The Hugo is like a people’s choice award for attendees of worldcon. The Nebula is voted on by the American Academy of Science Fiction Writers (given by writers to writers). I’m going to post a chronological list, and include two other awards: the Arthur C Clarke Award (given by a panel of F&SF judges for books published in the UK), and the Locus Awards (a true people’s choice award, from the reader poll in Locus Magazine).

There are some other ‘Major’ literary awards out there, notably the World Fantasy Award, the Stoker, and the Campbell Memorial, but to save space, I’m only listed Hugo, Nebula, Clarke and Locus - but definitely check the others out (Dragon fans, esp check out the World Fantasy Award :D). By way of Trivia, Ursula K. Le Guin holds the title for most major wins in the novel category with 8!

I figured that awards always spark lively discussions, so I’m looking forward to hearing your stories of when you read some of them, what you thought, where they led you, and if you’re inspired to check anything on the lists out!

TL;DR - Hugo and Nebula awards are cool. Here’s a list going back to the start. Share your thoughts!

Good idea. It wouldn’t hurt to list any awards your submissions have won.

Way to go Amberite !!
You’ve inspired me to go back a few years and catch up on some reading.
Thank you.

NothingButtheRain - Sweet!

This is how I first got into Neil Gaiman and Orson Scott Card. I kinda went “Gee, these guys seem to keep winning, I should probably check them out”. Totally glad I did. Hasn’t always worked out though. Still have Phillip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle” on a shelf somewhere…

Pike - Great idea. I think a couple on the voting list right now are award winners.

BTW: Plug Plug Plug - Everyone vote for the next book club selection!

Hurrah!

I find the awards process to be… interesting… but it’s always cool to have a new source for ideas of new things to read  thanks for compiling some of the information for us!

So, although I was stupming for the Golden Compas in the Nov/Dec Book Club thread, I’m pretty stoked to read The Left Hand of Darkness, given that as Cassilda pointed out it’s a Hugo & Nebula winner. I’m almost ashamed to admit that I’ve never read anything by Ursula K. Le Guin, so I’m doubly looking forward to reading it.

I’ve edited the listing to reflect which books have been included in the book club based on the stick thread! Six books, including the latest, have officially graced the book club’s hallowed halls, er hands, or something…

Happy reading gang!

BTW: for kick’s I’m going to post a threat with the major fantasy awards and do the same thing. It will be interesting to see what’s on that list.

Be not ashamed! We all have blind spots in our reading - I for one had not read a ton of military science fiction (I still wouldn’t say I’ve read a ton, but I think I’ve managed to cover the basics) until a number of classics (and awesome new stuff like Scalzi’s work) were in the book club.

In my world, more books are always better!
