Hobbit getting made with Peter Jackson

Well, it looks like New Line finally decided to pay up to ol’ PJ to get him involved in The Hobbit and a sequel. I’ve never seen any of the LOTR movies, but I’m sure that some of you here have and would like to know this. It’s unclear if he’ll be directing, but so far we know he’ll be producing. It looks like they’ll be filming it all at once again, with releases in 2010 and 2011.

Ugh! TWO Hobbitt movies? Is that necessary? I’ve tried reading that book twice and just don’t see what the big deal is.

And the big question that this news begs, of course, is what does this indicate about the Halo movie?

Armando: The Hobbitt is why I didn’t read LotR when I was a kid. Someone gave me a set including 'Hobbitt and I thought I needed to read it first. It only made sense to me after two movies and three books.

That’s good I suppose. I’ll certainly go an see the movie. Here’s hoping they can get Ian McKellan back.

I’m confused about why there are two movies… I like the book, but there doesn’t seem to be enough there to make two movies out of…

I thought I’d read that the Halo movie lost it’s director…Jackson is still producing it. If the director did bail/whatever happened maybe it’s just on hold until they hire another.

You know, I had to go re-read a few of the articles to get this straight in my head:

The plan isn’t to make two movies of the Hobbit…the plan is to make a movie of the Hobbit and a sequel that links the Hobbit to the LOTR.

A sequel based on what precisely? That is my question. I have this strange and unpleasant feeling that they are going to make something up loosely based on other works by Tolkien.

Oh my.

Does that mean that LOTR gets it’s own Zombie season[tm]?

The Lord of the Rings is better. It could’ve used an editor, but it’s still much better. I felt it captured the spirit and language of ancient heroic epics extremely well. All I could think of through the Hobbitt, at least what I managed to read, was how Bilbo should’ve kicked all those rude people out of his house then gone back to bed. Seriously, Hobbitts aren’t hospitable; they’re doormats!

The Silmarilion? The appendices to LOTR? (There’s lots there.)

Yeah, but they are prequels.

The Hobbit is the reason that it took me till after i saw the movies to read the books
it sucked
then i saw the movies, and read the LOTR triliogy and thought o this is kinda cool
if there doiong some sequil by themselfs, that wasnt written by tolken, i refuse to see it…ok maby ill rent it

Wow…am I the only person who enjoyed the Hobbit when I first read it? (4th grade)?

I think I would have, had I read any of the other books first. I enjoyed it greatly as an adult.

Come to think of it, I’ve had many experiences like this. If I’d’ve just had a little more patience as a child, I wouldn’t have missed so many great reading experiences. (Not that I didn’t read like a fiend. I just missed some biggies.)

I had the same experience – documented here on the forum, of course – with Dune. If I’d have just given it a look past the first 50 pages, I’d have been hooked just like everyone else.

Doh!

Nope. I liked the book too, and I also look forward to the movie. Some people don’t like the hobbit, but that’s cool—I never could get into shows like Heroes and Lost, despite people telling me how great they are, so I understand.

Nope. Count me me in also. The Hobbit was the first Tolkein book that I read as a kid and got totally entranced by it. I had no idea that LOTR existed until later. In the meantime, I found a copy of the Silmarillion and read that, thinking it was a continuation of the Hobbit. It threw me for a loop and knocked me off of Tolkein until I was about 14 or 15 before I tried LOTR. Now I practically re-read the stories just about once a year.

I’m a little afeared that PJ may not (and probably won’t) be directing it - considering that he’ll exec produce it on top of actually directing 2 other movies: The Lovely Bones, and Tintin (!!)

One director is already being considered by the media: http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2007/12/will-guillermo.html
Hmmmm…

If they do a Halo movie I wonder who’ll play Cortana? I could never do it since my butt’s not big enough (and that’s SAYin’ somethin’).

I don’t know. I’ve been told that the problem I have with The Hobbitt is that I tried to read it as an adult. It’s supposed to be a kids’ book.

Oh Audra, Audra, Audra! That’s what CGI is for.

I think that is why I am actually looking forward to the movie. I read the book at a young age, but haven’t read it since. Regardless, it really engaged my imagination, and I have very fond memories of it. I should probably look for it, so I can see if I still feel the same way about it.
