Okay so I treated myself; and got me some heroes blue rays and boy did I get some hate a fellow shopper at the best buy, was like oh that was the cool series in the first season after that it sucked… I just smiled and ignored. Her… headed up to the cash register and the nice fellow said oh heroes it makes me sad how crappy the last seasons were… to quote a winchester son of a bitch. I know folk lost interest in it but I liked it… and dislike haters who rain on my fun…
I hear you. I am most Chuck-like when I talk about Heroes. I was perpetually positive about it. I gave it every chance. I defended it even when my own support secretly eroded. Ultimately after 3 and 1/2 seasons I couldn’t watch anymore. Halfway through season 4 I just stopped. I am still not a hater, I just couldn’t watch anymore. Watching felt like a chore and my time was too finite. Same reason I stopped watching V, I wanted to like it, but when watching it felt like something I had to do v. something I wanted to do I called the ball.
Let me know how the 4th season ends up and whether I should interrupt my SG-! firstwatch for it. I trust your judgement bro.
Takes a deep breath,
season 4 was great, very much like season one introducing new charaters, and there was some great moments of the joy and wonder of discovering superpowers, the big bad was great, charming evil and the kind you have sympathy for.
there were some miss steps, in the season Claire was not used well, mohinder not really used at all. They went back to revisit season 1 which was a cheap shot, but well done. And the inevitable heroes set up for great big superpower battle that fizzles out.
But I just loved it… I will warn you I have enjoyed every single episode of heroes accept for season 3 finale. (admittedly a tragedy) so maybe I’m drinking the kool-aid. But all I can say is I liked it. and recomend it flaws included.
I watched every episode. season 1 was brilliant, every body knows that. but the writing staff seems to have no clue what direction or story they want to tell. it’s worth watching once. but when someone says that the rest of the seasons weren’t as good as season 1, that should not ruin your fun… even if you don’t agree, i don’t think that should ruin your fun. I mean I am not going to stop watching Star Trek, BSG, B5 or any scifi show just because people said it sucks. It’s great that you enjoyed season 4. I actually think season 3 had more redeeming qualities.
It’s funny how quick we all are from time to time to jump from the role of consumer to the role of critic. Maybe it’s because we feel a kick of power from sitting in judgement of a work. Maybe it’s because we afford famous critics a special place in society. Maybe it’s because it’s easy to feel better than someone else when you “see” the faults in something they('re too dumb to) miss.
I don’t know why we do it. But I can tell you this as someone who’s professionally written reviews: bad reviews are a hell of a lot easier to write than good ones. It’s easy to be snarky and petty in really entertaining ways when the product blows.
Here’s the important take-away, though: Regardless of how one feels about a particular work of art, there’s never reason to actively work to spoil others’ enjoyment of it.
You’d be surprised at how often we catch crap at GWC for not being critical of the material we discuss. “It’s just a love-fest,” they say. “You don’t call out ‘bad’ material.” But they’re missing the point. GWC isn’t a review show. (That’s not an accident, btw. There are hundreds of “review” podcasts out there where you can hear the hosts’ opine on whether a work is good or bad.) GWC is a podcast about enjoying media, celebrating the joy of being a consumer. Stripped of the need to put on the robe and pronounce “it’s good” or “crap!” one can instead just relax and get something out of whatever one takes the time to check out. It’s freeing. It’s awesome.
And one thing’s for sure, too: Pouring one’s hate for something on those who enjoy it in an attempt to spoil their fun is pure douchiness.
I, too have stuck with Heroes. Watched everything as they aired. And, will continue to do so (even though I don’t even know if it’s coming back atm).
Unfortunately, it has become more of a chore/habit than for enjoyment aside from a few bright moments in between.
I can’t exactly hate on it. Loved it and then I just lost interest. I think Chuck mentioned on a 'cast that it was probably a victim of the writers strike (Chuck, correct me if I am wrong).
I did catch the last few episodes though. I liked the way it ended. The last line with Claire was perfect…based on that, I would liked to have seen them bring it back for a mini series, just to show teh aftermath of their action. But it was fine the way it ended.
