HeroClix?

The discussion of gaming in GWC #74 made me wonder: Has anyone in the GWC community played HeroClix who would recommend it? I am thinking about giving it to my six-year-old, who loves superheroes and action figures and board games, who is also surprisingly good at “Risk,” seeing as how it’s designed for older kids – so, on the surface, it seems like it might be a good match. Is it terribly complicated? I bought him a Fantastic Four starter deck of the “VS” card games system and I still can’t figure out how to play it “the right way” – we basically play glorified “War” with it – and don’t want to end up in the same situation again!

So any advice or insights would be appreciated!

Heroclix used to be fairly easy, but I don’t know if they changed that in the latest rules changes (which seem more aimed at making it and Horrorclix use the exact same rules)

The Rules are available for download at via wizkidsgames.com . If you do some looking, you might be able to find older starter sets cheap. One local store had Indyclix starters for $3, which can really give you an idea if you want to get one of the newer DC or Marvel starters.

Disclaimer: I used to be one of the field reps for Heroclix (and Pirates), but since the store stopped hosting games, I lost that position.

(Also, if he likes giant robots, you might like the Mechwarrior: Solarias VII starter sets.)

Thanks for the tips – I will check out the rules and look before I leap!

I wouldn’t call it a “kids” game, because I’ve seen a lot of adults that have played it. But I think the rules are simple enough that if your kid is able to play Risk, they shouldn’t have too much of a problem with Heroclix.

Thanks, ATGreat. I do know lots of adults play, and I certainly wouldn’t use the term “kids’ game” in a derogatory way. I’m glad to hear you think the rules could be mastered by someone who has played Risk. It’s not like either of us are the greatest Risk players, but we can manage.
