Here we go again - Homosexuality in Caprica

I missed it my first time through, but I think that’s because I saw Dumbledore as an asexual character. It did seem really obvious when I reread it, and I felt kind of silly for missing it.

Now that you mention it, I remember thinking that it seemed pretty gay, but I figured I was reading too much into it at the time.

Caprica isn’t Star Trek. It isn’t a universe where it’s fans should EVER say "this is the world we wish and hope for. That is star trek’s gig. ( actualy I don’t even like that aspect of trek, i think it often limits their ability to tell good stories cause it make them get preachy! aka “starfleet isn’t a military, but we have ranks, use navel terms, fight every space war in their history, and are the nations only defense force”- stupid f-ing GR)

But caprica is a planet that Adama all but admits deserves to be destoyed. So realy they should show gay chracters completely out of whack. It should piss you off every episode. So when the end of that world comes… all is justified!

Hmmm, that’s what I always loved about Trek. It’s about Hope. Humanity will survive. We will venture into space. We will continue. It’s a beautiful sentiment. It’s not realistic or dark, it’s a dream and I think it’s a fantastic dream. Trek takes us on the greatest adventure; both inward and outward. The semantics of military aspects (Starfleet, etc.) are peripheral.

Of course I am speaking of TOS and what Gene hoped for TNG. That being said, I love all the series of Star Trek. They each have their own flare and brilliance.

I think I actually said “here we go again”, but then I rememberd the Vito story line in the Sapranos which was done really well. There are obvious Sapranos influences in Caprica, so I will reserve judgment. It will be interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts down the road.

So the show proceeds apace … and I’m still pretty ambivalent. I sorta like Sam Adama more now but my opinions on the depiction of homosexuality haven’t changed all that much.

Clarice is just a clusterfuck of wrong, IMO.

I like Sam a lot. I also like Serge. (Maybe they should hook up?) But the last episode I thought Sam was perfect.

Clarice on the other hand is a clusterfrak in all the shades of the rainbow.

I’m still waiting for a foursome with the Zoe avatar, The blond girl (played by Magda Apanowicz), the Tauran grandma, and Serge.
-but then again I am strange.

You’ve been reading my slash fiction again, I see.

No, but provide me with a link, it seems our dreams are similar. Do you have the one where Summer Glau and Taylor Swift are bikini Nazis and you’re being held captive by them in a hot humid jungle?

Hey, you hacked my LiveJournal, that hasn’t gone public yet!

this is strange, yet thrilling.

I dont know, Sam seems to have quite a bit of morals and god-fulness in his character. Now whether or not you agree with them is a different story.

Sam’s character is a criminal, therefore a person of poor morals… but he is still one of the stars of the show hence this: He isn’t good, but he is one of the “good Guys” kinda like Tony Soprano isn’t a great moral figure, but he is one of the guys you are intended to route for when you watch the show. ( as opposed to Helena Cain, who you are supposed to hate [ i dig her thou, that makes me evil I guess])

Sam being gay means that they are saying … being gay in this world is pretty normal. Gay guys can be tough, they can be great characters, and their sexuality isn’t the totality of their characterization ( which traditionaly is how gay characters have been portrayed)

But let’s break this down. Without inventing a gay main character just for the sake of haveing a gay main character ( which is a horrible idea- that’s almost the same as takeing a script and saying “write me a black guy on here… just cause we need one”), here is the list of main characters.

William Adama Sr- ok doesn’t fit the story at all given the production of two biological offspring and Bill Adama refrencing his dad and mom.

Sam- perfect!

the teenagers, - Ok I am cool with that.

The teacher god worshipping lady from Rome- ok kinda creates the same arguement against Sam. She is potentialy a full blown villian.

The cops? they are lesser characters than Sam.

The Greystones as a gay couple? you can wish all you want… but NBC Universal wouldnt go there. I would watch that show, most of america wouldn’t… the press over the “gayness” would overshadow the content.

So Sam is the perfect choice to be gay!
