Help Me Build My New Computer!

That was quick! Have time to test any games out yet?
I was pretty busy with work this week so I didn’t get to do much more, but I did read a bit more about motherboards. What do you think of the Sabertooth?

LotRO at 1920x1200 averages 100+ FPS, 80+ in crowded places. Never went below 34 FPS.

Dragon Age Origins at 1920x1200 looks smooth.

I have the Sabertooth P67. I can’t get my RAM to work at 1600 w/o errors, but I think that’s the RAM’s fault. Otherwise, it’s a solid board.

Nvidia released a card called GTX 560 TI for $250-ish. I just read about it today. Had I known of it sooner, I would have gotten it instead of the GTX 470. Oh well. the spread it only +/- 8-11 FPS.

Ugh!

Intel finds flaw in 6-series chipsets, halts shipments

So, I’ve been using www.newegg.com for most of my hardware comparing and intend on purchasing from them for most of this. Anyone know why about 75% of their LGA 1155 motherboards would suddenly disappear?

EDIT: Fastcart and I post at the same time, lol!

Lol. I’m glad I posted before you bought anything. d:

Because this is a chip design-level problem, it will require the replacement of the Cougar Point chips embedded in the motherboards of affected systems. Intel expects to be producing an updated, fixed version of Cougar Point silicon in late February, with “full volume recovery” coming later, in April or possibly even late March. Implementing the fix will involve the replacement of a photomask for one of the layers of metal on the chip. The layer in question is apparently a “later” layer in the production process, so we expect there’s some potential for partially completed chips currently in production to have the revised layer applied to them. Note that the 6-series chipset is produced on Intel’s very mature 65-nm fabrication process, not the cutting-edge 32-nm process on which Sandy Bridge CPUs are produced, so this isn’t likely to be an especially thorny issue to untangle. Intel says the change should be “very straightforward” and it has “very high confidence” that the fix will be effective.

ARE YOU BLOODY KIDDING ME?
For the first fraking time OF MY LIFE I want to build a new PC with a new motherboard, and it gets pulled once it is OUT!!
Frak Me! I can’t build the computer without the motherboard. Uggg.

I guess I can pick everything else out. Wait for the new motherboards to be ready. Someone post one of those “Hitler Freak Out” Downfall pardody videos, that is how I feel.

Imagine how I feel… Took me 14 hours to put the pieces together. Now, I’m contemplating taking it back apart and RMA’ing.

Our alternative is the x58 (or AMD). But, that would feel like a downgrade to me.

Edit: Newegg lists 3 1155 motherboards atm. You can order SATA 6gb/s drives to sidestep the problem ports. Asus boards have 4 each (8 total).

Edit edit: first time I’ve ever early adopted. And, the one time I do, this happens.

I don’t disagree with that.

I saw the three mobos on there, but they didn’t look that good overall. I think I am going to end up waiting. All the other processors are either a big price jump up or a downgrade.

Edit edit: first time I’ve ever early adopted. And, the one time I do, this happens.

I know, WTF. Is this unprecedented for new CPU chipsets? Have there been other cases like this in the recent past?

Still, based on what I have read, you will probably be OK for a while, at least until the new boards come out. We have to see how the return policy is going to work.

Anyway, I’m going to look at RAM now I guess. Anybody got good advice on what to look for in RAM?

I went with manufacture recommndation, except I didn’t pick RAM that were XMP. They don’t run at rated seeds w/o errors. They run fine at slower speeds, but that’ not why I bought them.

I bought cas 9 1600s, they run at 1333 though. A-Data, a brand I’ve never used before. I’m going back to Corsair or Kingston or Ocz (in that order).

I bought 16gb. I was using 6gb easy under win 7 64bit.

Edit: Geil is another brand I may try.

Wow, I didn’t anticipate needing nearly 16 GB. When you say you were using 6GB under Windows 7 previously, are you sure that is where the slowdown was?

One other thing I was wondering, in most cases are you better off with 2 x 2GB bars then 1 4 GB bar, correct? Although the differnce is minor.

Most would only need 2x4gb or 4x2gb. I use Google Chrome which can use 3.5-4.1 gb by itself. The extra 8gb is just to be safe. If I had went with x58, I would have gone with 12gb total.

Ever used G.Skill brand RAM?

Heard of them. Supposedly good.

I and several others got a pleasant email from Newegg wrt the motherboard situation.

As always, Newegg remains 100% committed to our customers’ total satisfaction. In keeping with our commitment to our customers, we are extending the return period for your motherboard by 90 days or until replacements become available from the manufacturer, whichever is greater. Intel expects to have a new revision of the P67 & H67 chipsets out around April, at which point first-run motherboards with this issue will need to be physically replaced in affected systems.

The dude’s expression is like, "I’m expecting a ****storm in th comments for this. Made me laugh.

sigh

Here is the RAM that is in the lead for now:

and

They are almost the same, and the same price. The first says it is specifically designed for Sandy Bridge, hopefully by the time I am ready to purchase there will be more reviews out there on it.

I’d get the first link. The manufacturer’s Qualified Motherboards List page lists many P67 mobos. The other does not.
http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=346

The second link has more reviews which makes me think the first link is a newer product though. That should be ok, but I’m wary of trying newer stuff now though. d:

Well, since I won’t be buying until the p67 mobs are out, I’m hoping there will be a few more reviews by then.

Spent almost the whole day researching video cards. The card I am going to go with is the NVidia GTX 460 1 GB version. It seems like the best card for the money I am willing to pay.
As to what I am undecided on is the brand, and I am looking for some recomendations.
EVGA has a real nice version: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130568

This MSI card has the best raiting on Newegg for my critera: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127510

ASUS, Gigabyte, PNY, Palit, all look like they may be contenders as well. As this is my first NVidia card, I’m not to familiar with the brands.

I bought an EVGA Superclocked 470. A week later, Nvidia released the 5600 TI for the same price as the 470, and AMD dropped it’s price on the 6950 (better than the 470).

That said, I think the EVGA 460 is a good choice with it’s warranty. I am an Intel fanboy, but I go with what’s best for my budget for video cards. So, I’m not so biased when I say that about the 460.

Edit: And the EVGA has a rebate. Nice.

Yeah, $25 instant savings, $30 mail in rebate, and free shipping. Although I’m 100% sure that the price is not $55 below list price.

I am really more concerned with performance and noise, so I will probably be doing some more reading on that one specifically.
