Help Me Build My New Computer!

So turns out despite having the same model number and saying it’s 667 the ram I bought is actually 800. Took out the 4 gigs of 667 and it’s running like a champ.

Glad I could be of assistance. (: Too bad I don’t use/need 667 ram or i’d be happy to take them off your hands. d:

I hope you didn’t do too much file copying or defragging with both rams. ):

Actually Memtest said everything was cool. I found out it was 800 with my gigabit overclocking software thinger.

I was about to order a new desktop computer when one of my coworkers pointed me to this deal.

ASUS LaptopA laptop would be nice for frak parties (if I ever get wireless set up), but I’m not sure how well it would work at my desk for normal use, since I have 2 monitors already using most of the space on my desk.

The only performance-heavy application I use is EVE, and I haven’t really been playing it much anyways, so the laptop would probably be fine for that, but I’m a bit concerned about available USB slots and the aforementioned desk space (plus not having a tower would make it harder for Rodney to get up to his perch above my desk :stuck_out_tongue: )

It’s actually probably cheaper than the desktop I’d get, but performance wouldn’t be too much worse.

I’m more of a software guy than a hardware guy, so any advice would be useful. Thanks.

EDIT: And any suggestions for cord management? The area behind my monitors is always a mess of cords.

Your link is broken.

For EVE, you might want something with a beefy video card because CCP will make “The Door” go away eventually.

Huh

What sticks out to me is “Widescreen LED-backlit high-definition (1366 x 768)”.

I say 1440x900 (or the 900 height resolution) is the minimum you should look at.

I really recommend 1680x1050 resolution if at all possible.

But, I dunno what your budget is like.

I finally installed 64-bit Windows 7 on my three year old ThinkPad laptop. It’s so much faster/better than how Vista was. Copying/moving files transfer at 30-40 MB/s instead of 20 MB/s, but some of that is attributed to upgrading from a 5400 RPM 160 GB to a 7200 RPM 500 GB HDD.

Thankfully, I was able to re-install most of the ThinkPad utilities.

PC is still doing very well. Lost a bit of interest in tweaking and benchmarking after it became clear it was going to blow away just about every game or piece of software you could throw at it.

I pre-ordered Battlefield 3, so that might make me jump back into tweaking and benchmarking, because that game looks pretty intense.

I’ve been hearing about that game. But I have a hard time believing a current PC will have any trouble running anything that a 360 or PS3 can run.

I’ve been trying some tweaking of my own. I have ram that’s rated DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800), but i get errors on memtest at the same memory address when I try that speed. So, I run at DDR3 1333 and get no errors in memtest. However, I get a memory crash/error in Chrome sometimes. Also, when I try to narrow down the bad stick, I never get errors. I only see it on memtest when all 4 sticks are in.

Does anyone have experience with this Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 connector? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

Not I. Sorry.

Unlike most big video games of the last few years, this one has been developed with PC in mind, and will be altered slightly for Xbox and PS3.

I was really excited for this, but now it looks like Battlefield 3 is going to require Origin, EA’s now STEAM wanna be platform. This is came to light:

I use Origin for ME. Steam and Blizzard does it as well. You can opt out of Steam collecting. Dunno about Blizzard.

I didn’t know BF3 was developed on the PC originally.

EA Revises Origin’s EULA to Make it Sound Decidedly Less Sinister
New terms aim to make it excruciatingly clear that EA doesn’t want to steal your personal data.

http://www.giantbomb.com/news/ea-revises-origins-eula-to-make-it-sound-decidedly-less-sinister/3624/
"After the outrage over the last few days regarding EA’s Origin service, its EULA–which, at one point, made it sound like EA was collecting a great deal of user information and reserving the right to willingly distribute it to unnamed partner third parties–and the distinct lack of an opt-out feature for any of its apparent data mining activities, EA has responded by apparently updating its EULA to rephrase any and all references to data collection in such a way as to not make it sound quite as insidious as before.

The new EULA, posted on August 24th (…), addresses data collection…

While the fact that you still can’t opt out of any data collection whatsoever is still a bit troubling, the changes here are definitely a huge improvement over the murky and downright hostile language that was previously posted. So what say you, Giant Bomb community? Are you satiated by the changes EA has made?"

That is what I was waiting for! Good things can happen from Internet Rage once and a while!

Well, I’ve decided I’m going to go ahead and get that laptop I posted a week or so ago. Any tips for moving stuff from my old computer to the new one? In particular, will I need to resubscribe to all my podcasts, or is there a way to transfer them over?

Sorry. Didn’t mean to ignore you. This is a little beyond my expertise.

I’m guessing your laptop has Windows 7 installed. Under Start > Getting Started, there’s a few options. Most notable is Transfer your files.

I’ve never used it myself. I tend to copy the AppData directory and .ini/settings files over the net or using a thumb drive to a new Windows install.

I’m guessing if you do that, your podcast stuff will be retained provided you don’t use newer versions of software (like Firefox) on the new laptop.

How does EVE run with Captain Quarters? Btw, the above will let you retain bookmark organization and overview settings.

Well, I installed EVE, but I haven’t run it yet. Still mostly working off my old computer while I try to transfer stuff and get it figured out. Once I get one of my monitors hooked up to the laptop, I’ll try it out and report back.

I’m thinking about this mobo. I’d like to use Win7, Raid 8 2 TB or 3 TB hard drives and get a controller for 1-2 Blu-Ray drives. I’ll also need a video card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157266

What do you guys think?
