Halo: Reach

OK, I think I’ve waited a polite amount of time to create a Reach thread.

Soooooo… whaddayathink?

The missions are REALLY well-thought and the encounter areas are something Bungie obviously devoted MANY hours of test time to. The layout of cover provides MANY choices for approach without making it too easy. I think it would be too easy if Bungie hadn’t modified the Elite’s speed and behavior though, they are bloodthirsty, murderous, and well-equipped assassins now.

I’m impressed with all the new weapons, especially the needle rifle. I think, for once, they didn’t nerf anything AT ALL. In my humble opinion the magnum is finally right and the assault rifle is actually useful now.

I was concerned about the integration of the armor abilities, as were many others, but having been through the entire game I have to say they fit seamlessly with the game play. Love the jet pack but I tend to favor the hologram when available.

Wow, talk about feeling powerful, there’s nothing better than assaulting along side a whole squad of Spartans! Too bad this is the first and last time it will happen…

It’s nice to see the U-shaped Covenant drop ship make a return, but I have to say I HATE the concussion bombs added to both versions of the drop ships. They are deadly and make it very hard to find safe cover. I like the way they changed the trajectory of the Wraith’s energy bombs. You may think it’s going over your head and exploding harmlessly behind you… think again…

I think Bungie did a GREAT job with the space-fighter missions, especially since (to my knowledge) they had no experience with that kind of thing until Reach. I’ve gone back and played that mission three times in fact. It would be nice to see some kind of downloadable expansion pack for that but I doubt it will happen.

Firefight is even more ossim now, especially with all the customizations made available. My favorite right now is Gruntpocalypse. I enable the Grunt Birthday Party skull and use it for weapons practice, and I need a lot of practice.

I’m sad to see that the Halo will not be continued by Bungie from this point on. I’m not familiar with 343 Studios but they have some MONSTER shoes to fill. I don’t know what I will do if the live action trailers are discontinued, I can never get enough of them. If you have not seen them go to youtube and look for the Halo3 live action trailers and then follow it to the ODST and Reach productions. They are amazing and, in some cases, heart wrenching.

I don’t have much to say about the story because there isn’t much of one, and I’m kind of let down. I think my explectations may be too high, we followed John in three games so there was plenty of time to develop his character and all the supporting players. Kinda hard to follow that I suppose. Although… I didn’t feel let down at all by the story in ODST. It seems, in Reach, that the story took a backseat to creating an awesome gaming experience, in which they succeeded. I’m curious if anyone else noticed this as well.

Remember Reach!

I love it, same game play, but different… you know??
The story is awesome, the challenges are really cool, daily and weekly challenges make you want to come back some more to earn more credits.
They are trying to keep it fresh… and so far I think it is working. I mean it is just another shooter among many out there, but Bungie has done a good job.

LOVE IT!!!

No
Warthog Escape makes me a sad panda
And no
Scorpion mission. What the heck!? This is the first Bungie Halo game with no Scorpion mission.
How about that sequence with the
Zealot attack
? I jumped out of my chair!

What was the time span for this game? I haven’t quite nailed it down yet but I think it is one month. It started July 24th 2552 and ended August 30th or something like that?

I wonder what the chances are of another planet in another solar system having the same solar orbit period and axial rotation as Earth…

Um it totally had your type of mission it’s mission 9

Also they probably just use like earth standard time to make time throughout the colonies easier

OK, that’s it, no more drinking and gaming for me!

The cut scenes were done pretty well, and the space combat was pretty fun.
Multiplayer is a blast, I have been having fun with the photo’s as well.

On that note: a little help on uploading a screenshot from halo reach on to this post. Tried to do it via flicker, but it came up as a boxed ?.

See you GWCer’s online.

Boxhead 2006

Loved it, wished they would have stuck with the original story with the books.
Credit system: good
credit distribution: bad
armour: frakkin amazing

My step son told me about a Halo: Reach achievement in which one jumps off a cliff and executes an Elite on the ground below without dying. I made a video of it and uploaded it to my theater account (or whatever it’s called). Took me about thirty tries, I executed a grunt and an elite, but never got any achievement recognition.

Either way, it’s pretty cool to jump off a HUGE cliff and land on an Elite’s skull without dying.

I also liked the story in Reach. For starters, it took me a while to remember the Elites are hostile at this point in the Halo timeline, and they un-nerfed them as well. Even the Grunts seem more aggressive this time around. There were many plusses, a few minuses from my perspective.

Positives

 • Story, of course. Dashing to deliver Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn felt like fulfilling a prophecy.
 • Nods to the other Halo games, such as the alert noise you hear on the Pillar in the opening of Halo 1 as well as the old Covenant dropships, the Sinoviet building having the same floorplan as the old Reflection multiplayer map from Halo 2, and having Buck guest-star from ODST (complete with soundtrack).
 • Magnum is more like Halo 1 pistol, the DMR is a nice medium-long range weapon that reminded me of a single-shot version of the Battle Rifle, and the armor abilities (especially the jetpack).
 • Rockets can lock onto aerial targets again.
 • Smarter AI.
 • Covenant engineers are no longer harder than hell to kill.
 • Sniper rifle seems more powerful.
 • Greater accuracy when firing in short bursts, auto-sizing reticle.
 • No Flood, no assholes in space.
 • Rocket-launcher equipped Warthogs.
 • Falcons actually hover in place.
 • Rocketfight, nuff said.
 • Forge has a lot more toys.

Negatives

 • No dual-wielding.
 • Hunters seem ridiculously durable, even when playing on Normal.
 • I miss the Covenant Carbine, and the Needle Rifle doesn’t really do it for me.
 • The Plasma Launcher seems useless against moving targets.
 • Phantoms and Dropships now have concussion grenade launchers as opposed to direct plasma cannons.
 • Fuel Rod Gun rounds seem slower, giving enemies time to dodge away.
 • Spartan Laser burns out in four shots instead of five.
 • Falcons have no weaponry for the pilot in multiplayer.
 • Falcons have no grenade-launchers for the crew in multiplayer.
 • Forge requires a lot more configuration to get your game-mode right.

Aw man how can you hate on the Needler Rifle?! That’s my favorite new addition next to the DMR! Headshots kill, super combine kills, so good.

Any body else exepriencing “button lag” in online Firefight and online Campaign?

I’ve also been losing voice or teamspeak and it’s killing me. This lag is really starting to make the game unenjoyable and I think I’m going to put ODST back in the XBox this week.

I hate to be negative but it’s the truth, I’m not just going off for the sake of bad mouthing something. I’ve been trying to find something on the net in which Bungie acknowledges the problem and says they’ll fix it but so far no luck in my search…

In some games yeah but not all. Not enough where I’m like “F this”
