And… go!
It was dope. The only “bad” one was the Elite samurai dealy cause the art was just…total lamesauce. Just bag CGI with a filter over the entire screen. Not my bag.
I thought the baby sitter was my favorite one and then I saw the last one which was frakkin AMAZING
The Babysitter: I liked it. I thought the plot was thoroughly laid out, and it goes to show that while ODSTs are not Spartan IIs in terms of close-quarters combat, they are still quite capable soldiers.
The Duel: Took me a while to get into this one, but I couldn’t help but think it reminded me a lot of when the Cardassians joined the Dominion in DS9. Obviously it was definitely designed in the motif of feudal Japan, and that certainly made for some interesting battles when you see Arbiter 1.0 take out legions of Covenant all around him singlehandedly. “It’s a demon!” SLICE! Overall, not bad, but it was fairly predictable. The painting look was a bit… distracting at times.
The Package: By far the shiniest of the vignettes, reminding me a lot of Ghost In The Shell and Appleseed. It was very cool to see the first-person displays like that in Halo 3, but despite the spectacularity of the graphics, I can’t help but think the plot was a little weak and the dialog forced. For instance, why would the Covenant want to capture Dr. Halsey? They could just kill her and severely hinder the Spartan program. Which leads me to who I feel was the weakest character in the segment… Master Chief himself. He was pretty good at being a strong leader, keeping his eyes on the mission while staying cognizant of the welfare of his team members. Then after he gets to Halsey, he suddenly becomes very… I dunno, emo. Halsey actually ends up yanking him back to the task at hand. Lastly, when Chief has his sword fight with the Elite major, it was so anticlimactic. You have the appearance of an impending badass duel, and Chief loses his sword and gets knocked on his ass in all of ten seconds, leaving him to remark later “that elite was strong.” It felt a lot like they took the character of Chief we’ve known through the games and severely weakened him in both strength and depth of character. (Was it just me or did the stealth ship’s captain look like Patrick Duffy?)
Origins: Obviously this is for Halo Legends what The Second Renaissance was for The Animatrix. We get a lot of good background directly addressed at the origins of the Flood and how the Forerunners fell victim to them and the Halos. Still, seemed like they took a lot of established plot and forgot it. For instance, the Covenant and UNSC did not “stumble into peace” when they realized the Flood was their common enemy. Still, the sequence displayed during that part was amazing, and the music provided an genuine crowning moment of awesome. It sort of made me wish the plot HAD actually gone like that in Halo 3.
Homecoming: This showcased one of the more dark sides of the UNSC, and how the Spartan program actually was started. Reminds you a lot of Section 31 from DS9 in their method of “ends justifying the means.” Rather sad upon further reflection.
Prototype: Spiffy visuals, but I can’t help but be left with one big question after it was over: after how successful that heavy armor suit was in fighting Covenant on the ground, why the hell didn’t the UNSC build more? Seems like they would’ve done better than continuing with Spartan IIs.
Odd One Out: Very much in the style of DBZ, totally non-canon, and as such kind of a nice break from the monotony of drama in the other vignettes. Two big things stood out to me: “IMA CHARGIN MAH LAZOR!” and “IT’S OVER 9000!” (watch for that second one, it’s very subtle )
