GWC Re-Watch Frak Party: Black Market

It’s week twenty-five of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season 2.5 episodes “Black Market.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.
See you here all week!

To make my initial post to the forum I will try to speak to Black Market. Black Market is an episode that goes places Star Trek would almost never go except for DS9. Is there more to life in the Fleet than what happens on the Galactica and Pegasus? That is what this episode shows.

Is it hard to watch? Yes.

Does it provide quite a bit of set-up for later story? Definitely.

I actually liked Black Market the first time through, and after rewatching it the one big thing that popped out at me was how this really foreswadowed Lee as the PI/Lawer that we saw him as in the end of season 3.

I liked this episode, as has been said, it opens the door into what’s been going on in the rest of the fleet. I think my perceptions of this episode were kind of tainted originally, as I had listened to Ron Moore’s 'cast first, and if I remember correctly it wasn’t one of his favorites at all, maybe more for technical reasons and “behind the scenes” problems…Anyway, a good episode, it definately shed a different light on Lee and what he was capable of…that mob boss assasination shot was a bit of a surprise, but a good one. Balls, he had. Balls. And maybe a reckless disregard for his own safety and life, which seemed to be a bit of an issue with Lee for awhile…

I still don’t get this dark journey they put Lee through in 2.5-3.0. He goes all suicide-watch on us when he gets hit in the attack in RS2. It seems until he was floating in space, there wasn’t any hint that anything was going on with him (more than the usual pentulant boy scott he’s always been). Yes this issue of assasination is serious, but didn’t he complain to Starbuck earlier that she was acceptig Cain at face value.

Anyway, that disconnect made my original watch of the Lee story hard to take. It’s easier on the second watch, but that’s mostly because I understand what’s going on.

Just finished listening to the podcast a little while ago and it’s funny that Chuck mentioned that he needs to read Dune. I just finished Dune last night and am about ready to start reading Dune Messiah. So, I agree Chuck, you really need to read the Dune books…not necessarily the “new Dune books” but defo the original 4 books.

Forgive my ignorance, but as I recall Frank Herbert wrote 6 books (Dune, Dune: Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse Dune) in the Dune Saga; the last about the same time that his wife (who suggested the title) died. If there was something about the other two I don’t know about I am sorry, I read them all in the late 90’s or later.

Nothing to forgive Bo! You’re right there are 6 books by Frank Herbert. I should have reread and corrected my mistake. Thanks for pointing it out!
