GWC Podcast #96

So, for all those hobby astronomers out there: is there any way of deducting the time frame of the show by correlating Halley’s comet in relation to Jupiter?

While I have no problems with Tory being questionable in airlocking Cally (and I agree with Audra, that it is murder, even if Tory did it to cover her/their cylon asses. Self defense is only valid if you think the other person’s gonna kill you. Self defense it is NOT when you think the other person’s going to reveal a secret of yours, even if the secret might lead to death.), but I don’t think it was the ONLY thing she could have done. With Cally’s fragile state, even if she lived, I’m not sure if everyone would believe her. Even Dr. Cottle had reservations about what Cally believes is real, and we all knew how we felt when last season revealed the final four. If we had (little, but still some) trouble believing the whole Dylan sitar sequence that led to them four being cylons, how’s jacked up on pills and no sleep Cally gonna convince the others? Tory, being as calm and collected as she is, easily could have flipped it on Cally and accuse her of being one of the final four. So no, airlocking Cally was definitely one brutal and perhaps not as necessary as originally thought, act. Not to say I didn’t support it - I feel terrible about Cally and how her life turned out, but it’s also exhilirating to feel so much for an episode. I can’t wait for more!

BTW, painting sure does turn Starbuck on. Everytime she’s around paint, she ends up having violent sex with someone, be it in a dream sequence with Leoben, or whipping some ass with Anders.

…I’m glad she restrained herself and didn’t jump Helo when they were in nuked-Caprica.

This may be old news, but did anyone notice the 1701D on the door to the weapons locker/room? Thought that was a nice shout out for RDM to give Star Trek.

Yep - A lot of fans caught that as soon as it was shown on the screen. Nice shoutout for RDM’s Star Trek origins.

The scene between Starbuck and Anders reminded me of the Buffy/Spike scene in Smashed (I think).

Both women back from “the dead”. Both sensing a disconnect from their former lives. All they want is to feel.

If the search for that feeling culminates in violence, sex, or violent sex, they are willing to take that step. Passion for its own sake. Just to feel something.

Anders mistakenly (?) takes her musings to heart, hearing his own thoughts outside his head. He still thinks she’s the 5th cylon. He needs to believe she’s the 5th cylon.

He is still desperately in love with her. He’ll take whatever she gives him. He doesn’t have the will to deny her- and he doesn’t want the will to deny her. That scene was as much about a lifeline for him as it was for her.

It made me sad for them. They need something so much that neither can give the other. Their only connection was sex.

And hey, what guy is gonna turn that down? lol! Yeah, self-loathing can come later…

Tori Murdered Calli. Capitol M murder. I see no ambiguity about it at all.

your thoughts?

Yep - Check the General Discussion thread.

craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaappp… i wonder what that could mean.

At the (great risk) of redundancy - my astronomy is pathetic, but my mid 1960’s music is OK. All Along the Watchtower had to give us the time frame before which the series cannot be happening (the 4 even repeated the lyrics for Pete’s sake).

I leave it to those smarter than I to guess how far in the future (from the mid 1960’s) somebody might be making use of that song. My bet is that it is not thousands of years. (In fact for dramatic effect - one should expect the series to be within “our” time frame - that will maximize the Twighlight Zone freak out effect).

It sure does look like a Ship of Light - but that could just be another homage. As noted we already have 1701D, skin jobs and right eyes. Even I am skeptical of a BSG meets TOS meets Blade Runner outcome - unless of course the current governor of California somehow figures into it.

So say we all, Bob, so say we all. :frowning:

Now that Chuck brought up the Imperious Leader on the blog - he/she/it just MUST be the final Cylon! Y’know, the one pulling ALL the strings.

i though ron moore said he would not be going the route of having the ‘imperious leader’ on the re-imagining… i could be wrong though.

Yeah, well, I think he also said there was gonna be no ships of light and no “aliens” - we’ll see if that turns out to have been the truth.

By the way; I agree that the final cylon is pulling all the strings… I bet the final cylon has known he/she has been the whole time, but I do not think it is Starbuck

Your just toying with him.

And what’s the use of being Imperious Leader if nobody knows you are?

“Seriously, I am the Imperious Leader.”

“Right - and I’m Mr. Spock.”

“No really, watch this…”

You’re definitely not crazy. I noticed this on Friday and was talking about it with a friend yesterday. I sure hope, though, that if and when we see light beings on the show, they don’t suck.

Solai’s catch on the ship of light sent me to hulu to watch “war of the gods I & II” and aside from triad outfits I wouldn’t mind seeing the new guys in, there was this: five figures, shrouded in (sparkly) white, who tell Starbuck,

“As you are, we once were; as we are now, you may become.” (not an exact quote, but close)

Now that bit is pretty directly lifted from mormon theology, which we know Larson drew from heavily to create original bsg, describing the progression from human to godlike being. However, it could also suggest something about the nature of the final five in relation to the sig seven, as the scene is reminiscent of D’Anna’s (and/or Caprica Six’s & Baltar’s) experience in the Temple of Five/The Eye of Jupiter.

Now in the case of the original series, the five beings bring Apollo back to life after he’s been killed in his noble sacrifice of himself. Once back on Galactica, Starbuck and Sheba have no memory of the encounter, but they, along with Apollo apparently have information on Earth’s location.

Sound familiar?

ETA: wow, I should check the blog more often. color me redundant

OK, OK - so it may (MAY) not just be an homage (unlike “all” the others). However, I’m not holding my breath that we are going to run into Count Iblis any time soon. On the other hand, if monotheism becomes more of a topic it is reasonable to predict that Satan will be right up there with God in the story line.
