GWC Podcast #91

We relate some of our All-Con experiences, then settle down to talk Maelstrom. Highlights: we wonder about Starbuck’s origin (a farm?), see her Starbuck-The-White change in new light, run down numerous “far-out” theories that suddenly seem reasonable, discuss Helo’s need for structure, spill the beans on our Viper sim featured in Popular Science this month, get schooled on X-Men, note Captain America’s need for “W-shaped tights,” and pine for April 4th. Don’t miss this weekend’s San Diego GWC meetup! Check the forum for details.

I am a huge Star Trek / sci-fi fan and never been to a convention. Chuck is not alone. Unless me be a paradox also.

I did however dress up for the ‘Attack of the Clones’.

I often credit X-men comics for inspiring me to pursue design as a career and am still inspired by them all these years later.

I somewhats disagree about diving into the X-men at any given point, but understand the thread reaches to far back it would be difficult retrace the whole story. An excellent to start is when there was just Uncanny X-men in the 80’s - around the time that X-Factor was made (a 2nd team of superheros made up of the original X-men). Arthur Adams, the legendary artist, also did a lot of work for them around then and has a portfolio of mind-blowing covers.

That era had my favorite X-men lineup (wolverine, storm, rogue, shadowcat, colossus, nightcrawler) and really leveraged the sense of alienation of the mutants while also developing the characters really well. I’m 30 now and still get sentimental when i think of those days!

jaw drops

I hope I didn’t come off as showy-offy about Chuck’s lack of X-men Knowledge. I think it will be the start of my READ PENDRAGON CAMPAIGN becuase it really is sweet and I need people to talk to about it.

I’m with Barb. I’ve had a voice-crush on Solai for quite some time

DAMN! . . .

Aw!

Thank you for the avatar love. A friend made it for me for my website (which I leave as an exercise for the reader to guess). Sean, if you want to make me a new avatar that would be waaaaaay cool, but you don’t have to. (If you do, try to do it on work time.)

As far as the mall goes, that was total fiction; I made up the mall name just to fit in the Part II.

And thank you judges for forgiving my inability to remember Trent Reznor’s name. If I had known how it was spelled I probably would have still used it but said the name in a goofy way. Trent Raayyy’eznoo’eer.

As for where I am from, I think I will remain a Chicken of Mystery until I forget and blab it out in some other post or something.

Keep up the good work! Please, please, please don’t podfade.

P. S. Oddly, my voice sounds exactly like I expected.

Damn, Audra you look good!

 in college, at one of my fraternity Halloween parties, my girlfriend and i dressed as worf and ezri. i’ve only gone to one convention, and it was not a good experience. I wore my klingon empire hockey jersey, and got there late. They were getting ready to close down and i talked my way in for free, roxanne was there doing signatures and I asked a dorky guy with a white dinner jacket full of signatures if i could get in line and he was quite rude to me saying there was no more people getting in line. as I was leaving, he called me a “fraking freak.” :frowning:

Hey so…
I was listening to this and you referred to Starbuck-the-White as “Serenity” which of course made me think of Firefly, and I was thinking that had Starbuck actually turned out not insane that she would end up something like Zoe… thoughts?

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this already, but on the note of scifi Japanese manga, my personal favorite is GUNNM, or Battle Angel Alita as some publisher translated it. I think any scifi fans here would really get into the philosophical question hidden behind the hot chick, awesome battles and half human half robot stuff.

The main character Alita is an amnesiac female cyborg. She was found by an outcast scientist from a garbage pile in suspended animation. Alita later realized that she possess knowledge of extreme fighting and killing style. The story advances as Alita rediscover her past and the true relationship between the floating city Tiphares and the Scrapyard city below.

Based on the Tigh-as-Daddy Starbuck idea and last week’s Razor-intro call, I had a vision of Season 4 opening up three days after the final scene from last season, in the canteen, with Tigh playing the piano, soused to the gills, singing “Ragtime Gal.” Then Adama (Papa) walks in and says, “Tigh, I didn’t know you played the piano.” And Tigh says, in a cartoony drunken slur, “[Hiccup] There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”

Now that would be the hottest thing EVER. Because Zoe is incredible, but she needs a little more fragility for me to truly fall. I think you’re right JCash. (Can I call you JCash? I’m feeling about as punchy as our heroes this morning.)

<sprays coffee across his screen>

What!?!?!?! I need to finish the podcast! I had to stop about halfway through!

Barb, Lady D…you are too kind. I am blushing Sean-style.

So true! I was in grade school around the X-Factor period and it drew me in for reals. I was a little 8 year old who had moved around too much and had no friends and I felt like a mutant… who could kick ass just like the X-men!

I somehow passed the X-love on to my little brother, born in the 90s, enough so that he named his car Charles Xavier. You know, like the wheelchair-bound Professor, you’d never suspect just by looking at his wheels that his Ford Focus is 12 kinds of awesome and can kick your car’s butt.

Is it alright if I be random? ell, what else is new lol.

I stand by Chuck, personaly. I get what people say, I really do, it is a military vessal. I even think Moore thought that Adama had a point. But the thing is, I remenber back in the good old days where Adama did not have to point a gunt o your head to make you follow an order. You wanted to follow the order, because he was a drong,a nd good man. The best leaders do not force you to follow him, they make you want to follow him. I still do not tink its fair to call him mini-cain. But, maybe I’m just to nice to him lol

As for Helo, the more we talk about him, he more I reallyd o like him. I am not sure if its exactly a fair comparison to compare him to Zarik. Does anyone think like Zarek? Really? I know if I was in the military, and Roslin did tat to my kid, I coudln’t promise hat someone wouldn’t get very very hurt.

Chicken with teeth not so outlandish as it would seem…

See here and here.

It’s true, Solai, you got some pipes!

And, Crew, I nearly put my eye out laughing and trying to apply makeup, listening to the end of your ‘punchy’ cast!

Audra should sing more!

Dude, that stinks. Come on down to Dragon Con with some of the rest of us and we’ll have a good con experience together.
