GWC Podcast #89 (Bonus)

In this wildly rambling bonus ‘cast we discuss the current movie re-watch, Real Genius. Highlights: we quote at least half the movie (saving you rental fees, right?), lament that our college experiences weren’t anyhing like Mitch’s, pay tribute to the great ’80s montage, crush on Jordan (and Chris, of course), and talk college pranks.

My favorite is the ‘Put one foot in front of the other’ montage from ‘Revenge of the Nerds’

Bew careful what you wish for.
Not all montages are good.
If I see one more Shrek montage set to “Rock Star” I’ll pluck out my eyes.

On that note:
My LOTR montage traveling music: Movin’ Right Along (if it was good enough for The Muppet Movie…)

Hah !! Thursday just got wicked funner… What a great surprise, a bonus 'cast today. And Real Genius as the subject…if I recall, when the forum opened up, this movie was pretty much one of the first to be heavily discussed/quoted/love-fested…thanks guys for turning on a bunch of people to this classic geek movie to many who would have never checked it out otherwise !

The song that leapt into my mind that would be perfect for the LOTR montage?

Life is a highway, by Tom Cochrane.

The more I think about it, the funnier it gets. It is a classic song to use, given the upbeat nature, guitar solos and heavy drums.

A few years ago a had very bad pneumonia. When I recovered I was in horrible shape, and the first day back at the dojo doing (slowly and painfully) my katas I realized I need a montage–three or so minutes to a fun song showing me doing slow karate, then faster and cooler, and then ending with me getting a black-belt.

Didn’t work.

Oh, and for LotR’s montage? Radar Love.

I just noticed, this podcast did not download correctly. It is marked as being an hour and ten minutes long, which means I am missing about fifty minutes.

Maybe this podcast isn’t two hours? Nah, can’t be.

There is also no mention of Mass Effect, so it must have been in missing time.

Ok - not much of a prankster but I did do a popcorn prank to a couple of friends my first senior year of college.

Myself and friend #2 spent most of the afternoon popping popcorn and storing it in a couple of black plastic trash bags. We then waited up at night until friends #3 and #4 went to bed. After they were asleep, we put up wrapping paper over their room’s doorway. Then, in the gap between the door and the paper, we poured in popcorn. Lots and lots of popcorn. And you know in the movie where they’re gassing Kent and the dude just walks through and says “hi” - that happened to us!

The problem with this prank was that #3 and #4 were early risers and since #2 and I were up till late filling their doorway with popcorn, I didn’t get to see what happened when they un-locked their door and opened it in the morning!

For some reason this was the first thing that popped into my brain and the longer it stayed there, the more I liked it.

Hey, that Nas version of “Everybody wants to Rule the World” is pretty cool.

I went to Youtube looking a a semi-famous clip of an uptight college guy going ballistic in response to a prank, something like a student government officer freaking out about his office door being glued shut. But I found so many more…

I too spent my teen years anticipating Real Genius-level shenanigans. And watching movies and listening to music instead of studying. So by the time I got to my Division II state school, the only pranks we pulled weren’t exactly elaborate. And none really appropriate to mention here. Maybe if y’all do an NC-17 buttcast…

Really enjoying the bonus cast. Thanx!

just listened to the bonus 'cast, and thought i would share this link with you all:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgJ0EpxjZBU

sure, it probably can’t pop a house full of popcorn, but it could probably do one of those little snack sized bags…

wow! that’s almost a light saber! do they also come in green?

This prank was my revenge for a copywriter friend placing an open jar of minced garlic behind my monitor at work.

-Bought an inflatable kiddie pool.
-Late one Friday night, inflated it and placed it in her cube. (took up most of her floor-space)
-Filled pool with water. (took many trips with a small trash bucket)
-The following Sunday, added 40 “feeder” goldfish.
-Dropped printed cards with pennies attached on 120 co-worker’s desks.
(text read something like “Annie’s lost her mind! She’s completely run out of ideas. Please come to her cube to see her new addition and to make a wish for whatever talent she had to return.”)

Now, I know this could be perceived as cruel to the fish. But in the end, instead of being eaten, all the goldfish found homes on co-worker’s desks.

Since this movie (one of my favorites) is basically a game of connect the quotes, I posted some .wav files that may help…
