GWC Podcast #82

Besides discussing the great BSG re-watch episode Unfinished Business, we check in on the Firefly re-watch and other sci-fi topics as well. Highlights: We learn that Sean couldn’t possibly serve on Mal’s crew, discover that one of our listeners has a remote connection to Ezri Dax, note two examples of uterus-shaped ships, question the latest fad of bashing Mass Effect because of its 60-seconds of sex content (out of 60-80 hours of straight-through game play), weigh in on the Chewbacca (with his “wurse”) vs. Wrex (and his biotics) forum debate, wonder why Tigh didn’t fight, comment on Roslyn’s beautiful red dress, and compare one journalist’s “sex box” (360) comments to Justin Timberlake’s SNL emmy-winning other sex box tune. Really.

I found this on Wiki, a translation of the opening credits which are apprenently a Hindu prayer. Very interesting

Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life,

Remover of pain and sorrow,
The Bestower of happiness,
Oh! Creator of the Universe,
May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light,
May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.

With regard to the the whole Green or Blue Asari question I will differ to Christopher Moore quote in the book You Suck

“Haven’t you ever wanted to frack a smurf?”

(there is no excuse for this post)

I’d smurf that.

Strange I had forgotten Smurf could be used a verb

there are days, I’m just plain silly

well, as the person who oddly had too much time to find Emma Watson picture… i enjoyed this podcast immensely.

audra-
i agree with you that we got to see the real, true core of starbuck, during the starbuck and lee hook-up.
it’s true too that people are greatly defined by their actions. but, i think that all her pomp and swagger are there mainly to protect her softer core. thus, making that the ‘real’ starbuck. and really, after having the childhood she had, and now the job’s got, she’s got to be tough. and for her to be tough, she usually can’t admit to caring about anything much.
sad, but this girl is all about defence mechanisms.

Galactica Watercooler, Podcast #82. Or, “There Will Be Goo.”

Another fun one (they all are). Thanks!

You guys beat up on that song during the podcast, and I have to object! The whatever-her-name-is O’Connor version is actually the craaaaappy version of the song. Prince and she had done a live version of the song first, and then she took the song and released it. Prince got really upset, and released the live recording to show her how it was supposed to be. If you want the actual good version of the song (and it is an actually good song), I have it and can email it to you. Thanks!

also, since when do you bleep out stuff on the 'cast?

Goo is primordial.

Also, in regards to Sean’s statement there are more Irish people elsewhere than in Ireland, I heard a quote:

“There are more Mexicans in America, than Canadians in Canada”. I realize this is a meaningless quote, but I think it’s funny.

The “wurse.” That part had me laughing so hard I thought I was going to have a heart attack!!! Join the wrex vs. Chewbacca debate today! Tickets are going fast… http://forum.galacticwatercooler.com/showthread.php?t=888

Ok this is very Twighlight Zone-ish.

I wasn’t the one who posted about having the hots for Dax on DS9, not the least of reasons being that I’m gay.

The really weird thing is that I do have a separate, totally unrelated connection to the actress who played Ezri Dax, but never bother mentioning because it isn’t very exciting: The actress, nicky de boer, is married to the my sister’s ex, John Kaster, who my sis remains close with.

So while there is a random connection, it isn’t the one you mentioned in the cast - how weird is that??

SS

Solai was the one, please see this thread

After hearing that Sean would pick Cally over either Dee or Kara, I figured I’d post a couple of videos from Tiki Bar TV that had Niki Clyne as their guest.

Enjoy: http://raad.wordpress.com/2008/01/22/tiki-bar-tv-brings-in-a-battlestar-galactica-mainstay/

  • on the subject of celebs finding out you think they are hot…I’m all for it. In fact, if Angelina, Halle, Jessica, Vida or Alyssa are reading this…I think you are hot.

  • Jadzia v. Ezri…yeah, what was up with that? I mean Ezri was cute and stuff, but she wasn’t Jadzia. At all. WTF???

  • Sci-fi folks seriously have a goo obession/fetish. Goo in a pod, goo in a chamber, goo serving different purposes. Splootin’ everywhere. Just nasty! LOL

  • Chuck’s a greenist…damn shame. Get right Chuck! Just messin’; with ya. i see Sean’s point…it’s kinda the same reason I’m not into blondes. Katee Sackhoof is very cute…just blonde. If she dyed her hair or had a wig…be on like donkey kong…you greenist

  • a Wurse?? That was too damn funny.

  • I wonder who would win in a fight–Tigh or Adama? Cuz Adama will sucker punch your @ss.

  • I agree with Audra about Starbuck when she and Lee hooked up. To me that was the real Starbuck. You could see that in “Maelstrom” as well when she said “We’re back to were we started, you’re the CAG and I’m the hotshot pilot. And that’s all we’ll even be” - she said it with such sadness, because (in my opinion) she KNOWS how screwed up she is. It’s the reason she ran to Anders and married him, because she felt Lee was too good for her.

  • Dee is HOOOTTTTTTT!!! And sharp…and HOOOTTTT!!!

  • Stick wielding the Enterprise…yeah, I’m really concerned. May not hold together during warp drive. Scotty’s gonna be mad. And the Enterpise did NOT look a thing like the TV version, more like the movie version.

  • on a totally separate note - R.I.P Heath Ledger. Gonna be really wierd seeign the new Batman flick.

I don’t like Lee being with Dee. Actually I just don’t like Dee because of he whole thing with Billy.

To each his Dulcinea :stuck_out_tongue:

I also agree with this. Starbuck is a complex creature with immense and elborate psychological walls and defense mechanisms. In that moment with Lee she was for a second pure and unfettered. The layers were pulled back and the defenses down. As she screamed, “I love Lee Adama!” at the night sky she allowed herself one instant of absolute honesty and complete openess.

I believe that vunerability ultimately scared the living craaaaaaaaap out of her. When one associates strength with being removed from the possibility of getting hurt, Lee represented the greatest risk to the Starbuck facade. I am reminded of Inara’s speech at the end of Heart of Gold,
“When you live with that kind of strength, you get tied to it, you can’t break away. And you never want to.”

Starbuck has lived with her facade for so long she has become tied to it. That is why she ran out and married Anders the next morning, it was her way of ultimately protecting herself.

Apologies if you’ve heard me go on about this before, but I really like the recurring theme of Chief learning hard life-lessons from Tigh and Adama. It’s probably not this simple, but I feel like Chief, the blue-collar leader, is one of the series’ few characters that’s being built up, not torn down, over the series.

Adama does throw the fight, right?

totally frakkin agree

Yeah, me too. I always thought Lee & Dee had zero chemistry together and couldn’t figure out why they would get married. However, Unfinished Business cleared that up! I think to some extent she had to know Lee loved Starbuck and always would. And as we all know, getting into a relationship and thinking you can change the person NEVER works.

Am I the only person who doesn’t play Mass Effect? I was lost for most of the 'cast.
