GWC Podcast #81

While Athena seems trustworthy, it remains to be seen how Cylon control works.

Once a Cylon is out of the good and up & running, CAN it completely control its thoughts and actions?

Is there, in fact, some sort of Cylon telepathy – or do they need to interface to receive new directions?

Or can certain situations trigger deep-rooted programming?

When Boomer (it was Boomer in the early episodes, right?) planted the explosives and shot Adama, was she responding to internal impulses or external instruction?

And can it happen to Athena?

I don’t know.

Thanks guys for posting/responding to my call (Cylons on earth due to Alogn the Watchtower transmission) and I am came to a realization…I really need to ease up on Starbucks after 4PM :smiley:

“One Galactica to rule them all” as Audra said, yeah i can see how Galactica bound everyone together…however, I’m thinkin’ there can always be “Firefly”, “Heroes”, “Night of the Lepus” (funniest damn 50’s sci-fi B-movie ever) type podcasts. Maybe post Galactica (Shiver), you guys could do a month of Firely podcasts and a month of Back to the Future 'casts, etc.

The real upside of this whole thing is that although Galactica bound all of us together - it’s the truly MASSIVE amount of sci fi that’s out there that will keep this going.

Jus’ sayin’

Who will be the next person to call in the latest episode of battlestar then? The call would be a touch expensive for me…

All together now,

RAZOR!

…and as for when BSG ends, I suspect the Caprica spin off series will make an appearance, or as is the trend with ending sci-fi shows, feature films (for example, the two Stargate films coming out very soon)

wubwub…your son ROCKS !!!

I tend to trust Athena, since she was never a sleeper agent. I don’t think Boomer’s ‘programming’ was in real time.

You could always record it yourself and send it to Chuck. I’ve done that a few times.

I think Athena is dedicated to being an officer, and a member of the colonial fleet. She’s abandoned the Cylons.

As for the actions Boomer took, I don’t think that she was receiving programming, or that she was programmed at an earlier point. I suspect that her sabotage was a result of an sub-conscious program within her which made calculated moves to hurt the fleet. I don’t think she was connected to the Cylons at any point until after her resurrection. Furthermore I think it’s clear that that sort of programming, can be overridden. Boom did just that when she was searching for water. Despite the blinking screen, she couldn’t see it and had to fight herself until she could. It appears that willpower is sufficient to overcome these underlying programs.

I’m gonna have to disagree with that. I think when she’s with the naked Sharons on the basestar she received her final instructions. In fact I think she was constantly in contact but a sleeper agent ala ‘Manchurian Candidate’.

Hmmm. Interesting point and a strong case can be made given her comment on Kobol after she offs Meier (Zarek’s bunk buddy) in Home, Part 2, “I need you to know this is my choice.” Then again she is a frakkin cylon. That being said, even humans can be brainwashed at least that’s what THEY tell me.

wubwub — Whenever I have a kid, I hope s/he is as cool as your son.

Oh - a classic scifi movie that everyone should see - The Flight of the Navigator!

I get to watch this on Monday with a BSG fan who hasn’t seen it yet! (She’s been watching the DVDs furiously for about 6 weeks and has finally reached season 3 so we’re doing a mini-marathon from Measure of Salvation through The Passage.) I am wicked excited. Maybe I’ll get her to post.

I loved that movie, the original I mean with Frank Sinatra… Awesome.

Pike, great link to the story on computer noises - thanks!

What a cool kid, sticking to the principle of the blue saber over the shiny, hip, but nonetheless evil and inaccurate red!

Starbuccaneer, if you want ideas for your kitty name, how 'bout sharing some of his personality traits?

Here are some suggestions:

My cats are all horror movie names: Jason , Freddy (they are brothers) and Wolfie. My other cat, Demon, just went to Cat Heaven. He rocked! All black.

Have fun w the name!

Hey, guys. You are all cooler than me so you probably already know about these, but your mention of a 2-1/2 minute of movies made me think of the “— in Five Seconds” series of videos on YouTube. Go to YouTube and search for “Titanic in 5 Seconds,” which is the best one… then you can follow links to others from there. Very funny stuff.

I just had to share this…

This morning my seven year old and I were out running errands and she says to me, “What if they did a Scooby-Doo Star Wars?” She continued filling in all the roles:

Scooby would be Chewbecca
Shaggy --> Han
Fred --> Luke
Daphne --> Leia
Velma --> C-3PO
Scrappy --> R2-D2

She then continued to wonder, “I know Fred has an uncle who could play Uncle Owen but I don’t think he is married. Well we could find him a wife and she could play Aunt Beru.” The whole time I had this huge grin on my face.

She was having trouble with Darth Vader, but I said, “Well every week they have a different villian which they unmask. It doesn’t really matter who plays Vader.” Then she says, “That could work.” I almost wet myself.

You have a very cool seven-year-old.
