GWC Podcast #68

i’m bothered by the fact that adam’s viper survived an unpowered crash (after an engine fire) and then re-appears in the pilot. that thing should be in a million flat pieces, not found “rusting in a salvage yard”

I thought about that, too, and have come to the conclusion that it’s not the viper he’s flying in the 'sodes, but one from later (or earlier). Not only does it avoid the issue you mention, it’d also explain why he looks more like Fonzie in the picture of him standing in front of the Miniseries “Husker” Viper with his kids.

Another piece of evidence: Starbuck has sent at least one Viper to the scrapyard, and they apparently keep painting her name on new ones.

And a good opinion at that. FWIW, I based my assumption on the fact that my father and I talked flying often, even long after he’d retired from the air force and I no longer had cheap access to aircraft. A lot of his life was spent around flying, and we talked flying from the time I was a kid. When I got my license, we talked it even more.

You can always find the pilots at a backyard barbeque. Just look for the guys flying their hands.

Navies often give new ships names of old ships. After the Lexington and Yorktown were sunk in 1942, two of the new Essex class carriers were given those names. The second Lexington was struck by a kamikaze in 1945 and then served in Korea and Vietnam and I believe she is now a museum ship.

So my guess is that the Chief’s Columbia was a new ship named for the old one. I’m betting there would be too much wreckage raining down on the planet to be able to recover anything from the old ship.

I’m back! And, oh, how good it is. After nearly 10 days of work and life business obstructing me from indulging in my bsg and gwc habits, I finally listened to podcasts 67 and 68.

Did anyone else notice the relative lack of Lee in the season 4 promo? There’s 2 infinitesimally brief clips of him, both without lines. I think he was in uniform, though, so perhaps he doesn’t walk out on the military with as much finality as it seemed he might directly following Baltar’s trial.

Also, how creepy is it that Sam and Kara are talking about “if you’re a cylon…” in front of the picture of Starbuck that Lee posted on The Wall after her death? Take it down, dudes!

That picture, btw, forms the basis of my kickass Halloween costume : )

Good to have you back! Yeah, all the promo material so far leaves Lee’s future pretty fuzzy. A while back, there was a S4 clip floating around online from the Canadian channel that airs BSG, and it showed Lee on Colonial One in a suit and with a longer, non-military-regulation haircut, which made me think he was making a decisive split from the military. Maybe the clips we saw of Lee in the trailer (especially the one where he’s hugging Starbuck) come very early in the season, when he might still be waffling on his decision to quit the military or not? Lots to think about…

TighgetsPunchedAlot, good job on the hanger scene footage.
In regards to Adama’s viper and it’s impending fate at the end of the 'sode, judging on some of the damage we’ve seen others take in dogfights, ie; the miniseries scene where Lee’s bird gets the craaap beat out of it and is still manueverable for quite awhile before Starbuck finally has to give him a lift into the closing hanger bay, some of the hits Starbuck’s taken, etc., I wouldn’t rule out Adama getting things up and running again (albeit with no verticle stabilizer, but you don’t need one of those in space anyway), restarting at least one engine, and limping back to Galactica. On the other hand, a pilot ejection is a likely end also. But I can see a young Adama’s sense of pride and guts on his first mission making him very determined to bring that viper home.

ok, after seeing the 'sode I guess the damage was too extensive

i’d like to say it was my brilliant memory, but ther truth is i started rewatching (again) and just happened to start that thursday before the miniepiwebipartisode aired.

that’s all i gotta say about that.

So are you saying that Star Trek is a better model on how a Navy will name it’s ships then The NAVY?!?!

[Kirk’s voice]
I am…responsible for the lives…oftwohundredndtwentytwoAlpacas.
Scohhhtty, weeeeee…needseasonfourepisodesupnow…or…we’regoingtolosetheship.

[Scotty]
I canna doit Captain. Our schedule is sittin like a rock in space.

[Spock]
Jim, to p*ss off one’s fanbase is not logical. I suggest the Vulcan mind probe to determine the reasoning of the SciFi suits.

[Bones]
Dammit, you pointy-eared, green-blooded…you know they must have episodes already in the can !!

my brothers a pilot, so I’ve seen the flying his hand for years. That and almost always dying when I’m in the car with him and he drives past an airport and he informs me of the kinds of aircraft that just landed as I grab the wheel so we don’t end up on the wrong side of the road.

Still a hell of a pilot. but i’m biased

But a terrible driver?

no i’m just saying more people are familiar with the inability to pick a new name from star trek than the navy.

It’s not the inability to pick a new name, it’s tradition. When the navy names a new ship after an old ship with a good history it’s like transferring the fighting spirit from one to the other.

All right, Topgun! Lol!

I’m late again, but I just wanted to comment on the season 4 preview.

I think that when Roslin said, “How did you get here?” she was speaking to Starbuck. Because how did she get there?!!!

And what was the bit with Adama shaking someone? Starbuck again?

As you guys said, things just look like they’re going to go from worse to out-of-control. Think about these relationship arcs, jeez!
