In this week’s 'cast we check out the first new BSG since springtime, plus we lament the result of this week’s rewatch episode, Sacrifice. Highlights: We dish on young Husker and his blonde friend, comment on Sci-Fi’s (new and unusual) definition of the word “immediate,” wonder where the mini-sodes will take us (besides “Husker Shaves,” or "Husker tries on a sweater), remind everyone why playing boardgames with Chuck or Sean is fun – though playing with both isn’t – play the seven degrees of sci-fi Shakespeare, talk Tron (letting everyone in on some GWC trivia), miss Billy in a big way, wonder if he really did save Dee, and listen to an on-site report from GWC correspondant Alpaca Herder at the site of our future national GWC meetup.
Caught the first 20 minutes whilst given my daughter her bottle up to the Husker talk. Will listen to the rest tomorrow driving around. Looking forward to it! According to my Ipod I have <glances at Ipod> another hour and fifteen minutes to go…this one is jam packed with GWC goodness!
Just leaving it that way is fine. I think this is only the second time I have been heard on the podcast anyhow. As I am probably one of the few here who formerly had a byline all I can say is that old training does kick in without thinking at times.
The music was so loud there by the slots that were so close to the exhibit. I was thinking on my feet with that voicer, alas, so I am thankful for the editing. I should have explained the significance of Monorail access. What that means is that you can still get to the casino to see the exhibit but do not necessarily have to stay at that particular casino.
It feels great to be able to actually listen to the podcast around the time of it being posted rather than six days later if at all.
And now for our alpaca husbandry moment…
Our baby alpaca weighed 18.5 pounds roughly around time of birth and was two feet tall from pads to ears. The length of a pregnancy period for a dam (the technical term for an alpaca mother) is roughly 11-12 months but generally 360 days. Once the dam gives birth she is ready to be bred again optimally about 11 days later. Of course, it should be noted that alpacas do not go into heat.
I have to disagree with Chuck that Billy would have rigged the election successfully. The Billy who refused to accompany Roslin when she escaped Galactica early in season 2 would not have participated in stealing an election. If he’d been alive, he’d probably have been the one to accidentally expose the fraud instead of Gaeta.
:mad:I HATE that book! They sold by the ton the last few weeks I worked at Barnes and Noble. Here’s the secret, everybody: “Think positive and good things will happen.” There. I just saved you $12.99.
My gods…Galactica and David Sedaris fans? It is now official…you are ALL the coolest. Now you guys need to mention him in two other podcasts so I can add his books to the required reading!
Damn straight, Chuck! As Adama says of Tory in “Captain’s Hand” (sorry, I’ve managed to get an episode ahead in the rewatch now. Let’s see how long that lasts!): “she’s no Billy.”
I’ll get to listen to you guys on the drive to Syracuse later today. It sucks having a baby in the hospital, but at least the commute gives me time to listen to the podcast (and baby’s fine so what sucks is not having her at home, just for the record).
I don’t know if anyone but me calls it the duck butt, but I’ve called it that ever since I saw it on a frat boy in college. Of course, you know what the difference between Mr. Bamber and a frat boy is? He makes the duck butt look good.
At the time I was convinced that Audra was right (re: camp requires intention), but after looking at Merriam-Webster’s definition, I’m not so sure.
The 2a definition was the way I was thinking of the word: something that is outrageously artificial and out-of-date, but not necessarily on purpose. Note, however, that the 2b definition seems to imply intent. So maybe we’re both right.
(BTW: I love this kind of discussion. It’s one of the things that keeps me going. There’s nothing more fun than being challenged by other members of the crew or community and ending up learning in the process.)
Or maybe he’s from Nebraska?
I’m hoping we can schedule a meetup at one next year. I’m going to start saving now so maybe at least a few of us can hook up, have some fun, and spend an evening hanging out amongst con goodness.
As usual, Pike, you make a great point. Assuming that you (as in “one,” the Texas “you”) are either a) the kind of person who gets off on screwing up your mate’s life or b) a helpless and damned lucky Lois Lane who can take a beating by villains and somehow make it through unscathed each time, you’re good. I bow to your logic in this matter.
That’s the one. I forget the name because I never, ever watch it. I’m really bad this way, believe it or not. For example, I’m a big fan of the movie Fargo. I own a copy of it that’s never come out of the plastic wrapping. It’s a great movie, and I want to own a copy of it. But I don’t want to watch it.
Jurrasic Bark just rips my heart out every time I see it, so I purposely avoid it. Because, in the immortal words of Peter Gibbons, “I’m a big pussy, which is why I work at Initech to begin with.”
I am glad I had the same effect on you as you had on me when you said that. I burst out laughing when you said that and immediately thought, “Oh yes…that will now become my sig”. Of course, if you or anyone tops the quote I’ll have to update it. For now, you are king sir!
That specific bit is a totally sucker punch anyway (I mean, Jesus H, it’s like 75 years over the course of that song!!!) and it’s the one episode will make me cry (I’m crying now!), but I’m girl and I’m crying every five minutes anyway, so it’s cool and plus you guys were throwing out Zapp lines left and right so I can’t begrudge ya. The episode is just another aspect of the unadulterated awesome that is Futurama. There are four or five solid episodes I’ll get weepy over and ‘The Why of Fry’ is one, right up there with ‘The Sting’ and others.
(And if you haven’t seen the Bender’s Big Score’ trailer yet, well, why not?)
Strangely, as many reruns of Futurama as I’ve watched on Adult Swim (many over and over again), I’ve never seen “Jurassic Bark.” But I feel sad just hearing everyone’s reactions to it. My favorite emotional was “The Luck of the Fryish,” where Fry finds his lucky clover and has flashbacks about his brother. Makes me all warm and fuzzy everytime.
And as for Bill “Husker” Adama’s callsign…maybe they named him after the sound of his voice?
Perhaps Husker’s his callsign due to Adama’s husky raspy voice ?
Edit: just read Glimfeather’s post prior re Husker…making this post completely unnecessary. Oops.
That’s border line heresy. The dvds are readily availble, I think most of us here would recomend them
Great job on the podcast. By the way in the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon-esque game you were playing, once you got to voyager you could have easily got to Patrick Stewart, via Janeway in Nemisis. Although I can understand why you might want to forget that particular movie.
