GWC Podcast #65

Besides getting down on this week’s re-watch episode Scar, we also spend a bit of time on last week’s Halo 3 release and the forum’s re-watch of Buckaroo Banzai. Highlights: We discuss BSG’s focus on the military and how Romo Lampkin is one of the few strong (non-government) civilian characters in the series, hate on Kat’s bad attitude, love on one of the best Starbuck moments in the series (and some great Viper action), note that the Master Chief likes big butts and he can not lie (no other Spartans can deny), toss out our favorite John Bigboote quotes, condemn Zur as a hoser (though the Kodan Armada is cool), bow to Audra’s knowledge of Latin, and bitch about the nerfing of the Wile E. Coyote.

Uh oh, you’re confusing “Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner” with “Xanadu.” Let the emails begin!

just listened to 64 and 65 together so this may be in the wrong forum.

You mi=xed your plots up for the Dirk Gently books, the one you were talking about is “Dirk Gently’s holistic detective agency,” where the time travel is featured. The second novel “The long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul,” is the one that features Thor and other gods.

Love those books, I have a first edition of DGHDA

I’m just going to nominate DGHDA for the next Book Club discussion. Sounds like y’all haven’t read it in a while :wink:

The BBC is doing a radio adaption in Oct. There’s also a fan production that’s up to three episodes.

–edit

Aaand a bit more time with google reminds me that both “Kubla Khan” (which I called Xanadu) and “Rime” (which I spelled Rhyme) figure into the plot. Guess I haven’t read it in a while either. I hope I can find my DNA audiotape version.

I’ll have to disagree with something that was said in this episode about the Dune movie being worse than the Starship Troopers movie. Starship Troopers was much worse. With the Dune movie, at least they were trying to follow the book and failed miserably. Starship Troopers on the other hand looked like it intentionally had nothing to do with the book, done by someone that hates Sci.Fi. and wanted to share their hate with the world. <\vent>

I remember reading/hearing that EJO would not be interested in participating in BSG were they to start heading down that road.

Right you are, sir. A man after my own heart. Sadly, it seems like we stand alone.

In regards to Sandy’s phonecall that was used in this podcast I have to say that I took her call differently. I took it as her saying that when sharon say that “Maybe you don’t deserve to survive” and I know a lot of people in the community will disagree with me I totally agreed with her. That humanity in this series in some cases doesn’t deserve to survive. I have never called in about this mainly cause I figured I would get called out by everyone saying I was wrong but you see in the first season how their mini community still has all the bad things that there 20-30 billion population had before the cylon attack. And I would agree with Sandy that its kinda sad to see that these people know that they are it, if they don’t figure out how to live with each other and work together then they are screwed and the human race is over. In a few episodes we see where key characters do learn to be better. But then we have others like in season 3 where a doctor is still willing to be a form of racist toward a culture than him. Its just appalling that this educated man can’t get past his prejudice to see that hey we only have 40,000 people left I should really just try to do my job as best I can and not try to poison these people. So I wouldn’t be surprised also if by some turn of events that the cylons turn out to be better than we see right now or that the human this time around isn’t worth surviving (if we are talking about circular time).

Dunno if that post is even that well written didn’t spend enough time on it.

The moment in Starship Troopers where they no longer try to hide the fact that the movie’s going down the crapper: when they have the prolonged boob-shot of what’s-her-name when her shirt gets stuck over her head. When all else fails…D’oh! :confused:

P.S. Like the sig, Lady D! The spitfire between Beatrice and Benedick is probably my all-time favorite in Shakespeare. Especially the part about the bee’s stinger.

There are a few of us out there bringing the message of it’s suckyness… anyone THAT WATCHED THE FRAKKING MOVIE!!! :rolleyes:
(Actually I know two people that liked it. I can’t explain it except that they thought the special effects were cool.)

Wait a minute, are you dissing the only redeeming moment in the whole movie? :smiley:

Alex, A male.

I would have to disagree with you guys with the worst sci fi movie… I am going on record with saying that Highlander 2: The Quickening was by far the worst sci fi and possibly the worst movie ever made. Loved the podcast as always!!!

Ack, SST was a particularly bad experience for me. One, because they made a farce of the book. Two, and more importantly, I forgot that The GF had a bug phobia. I probably treat the film more harshly than I otherwise would, just because I had five fingernails driven into my right arm during the bulk of the flick.

Cavatar … THANK YOU!!!

Highlander 2 was the worst movie ever made… The highlanders follwoing it were worse movies, but this one get “worst” status since it started it…

Highlander was such a great movie, and the concept was AMAZING. Then they had to jack it up with that crrrraaaapppp!

You know, I’ll go out on a limb here…

<deep breath>

Starship Troupers wasn’t that bad.

<ducks>

Seriously. I am not saying it was Shakespeare, nor am I saying 3/4 of that cast could act their way out of a paper bag with a knife and a flashlight. Of course, I had zero expectations watching it and had not read the book. It had good digital effects and the cast was easy on the eyes. Perhaps that is my problem…I was a little smitten.

Now Highlander 2…now there is a craaaaaaaaaaaap-fest. Can I top it with something worse that doesn’t crossover into Plan 9 ridiculousness and stays within Sci-fi (no fantasy cross over)

I got nuthin.

Well Solai it will not be I that shoots at you, because didn’t think it was a complete train wreck either.

<ducks as well>

I wasn’t hot on it as a whole but I enjoyed the effects and Dizzy’s “scenes” which I must confess was a great help to the sixteen year old kid who saw it.

Ah well, let them sling arrows Solai… I will stand (or duck repeatedly) with you! :wink:

I have a friend who is a crazy-insane Highlander fan. She would agree with you, but she’s also wicked excited for some new Highlander project that’s going on… despite the fact that everyone knows that without the incredible nineties-ness Highlander loses a lot of its pizazz.

Another friend, also a scifi fan, LOVES Starship Troopers. She made me watch it with her a few years back and I almost chewed my own arm off to get out of there, but she maintains that for a campy romp of a b-flick it’s highly enjoyable.

Thanks Sean.

How about this for a suspension of disbelief challenge:

“Starship Troupers 2

I have not seen it, nor do I know anything about it besides it being mocked from anyone who was brave enough to go. It was directed by none other than Phil Tippett of Star Wars animation fame.

I looked over the director’s credentials from the first movie, and I would recommend Chuck take a look. You are safe from worrying about never wanting to see this director’s movies…I don’t think you would find them appealing…

…with one notable exception. Maybe Audra and Sean have to take a look first and pre-screen prior to you looking.

I’ve seen it. It’s a different sort of movie, a bit more like Alien. No obvious literary predecessor, so you don’t resent them for making it.

On the podcast: I was surprised to hear yall mention liking Kat. I, too, appreciate her character but she drives me up the frakking wall. I don’t know if it’s the actress or the character as I haven’t seen Luciana Carro in anything else. Chuck said, “she’s an instigator with a chip on her shoulder but she’s trying” (like Starbuck a few years ago)-- that’s true, but Starbuck had some potential for growth that I never saw realized in Kat until her amazingly courageous death. Like I said last time, I really wish that we had some idea of how she had developed in her time as CAG. A leadership vacuum might have been just what she needed to grow up. However, Kat was so abrasive a personality that I was never going to love her.

On a totally different note: I loved Ender’s game even though I came to it pretty late (I was 17 when I first read it). The first 2 sequels were also pretty good. I’m not sure if there is any movie that could do the book justice because it’s so psychological. But imagine how cool the battle scenes could be! Either way, I won’t be seeing it because Orson Scott Card and I stopped being friends when he devoted a lot of time and energy to speaking out against gay marriage and gay relationships (one of the essays can be found here if you really want to read it: http://www.nauvoo.com/library/card-hypocrites.html). He’s free to have his opinions and to share them, but I’d prefer not to give him my money. Also, because I love his fiction so much I am really angry at him for being crappy in real life.

Hey guys

Thanks for playing my first ever call in :slight_smile:

BTW I liked Star ship Troopers! (Duck)

I guess nobody got the political message of the recruitment videos and how the director was spoofing the old WWII War bond propaganda. I did not read the book, so I took the movie for what is was, over the top “B” sci-fi movie.

I don’t think Paul Verhoeven hates Sci-Fi, he did do RoboCop and Total Recall
