GWC Podcast #216

Just gotta say, Bond girl or not, Grace Jones scares me. It has nothing to do with the whole androgynous thing. She makes me scream like an 8-year-old experiencing a nightmare. First time I saw ‘Conan: The Destroyer’, I ran to my mommy and pleaded, “Hold me.”

I’d get in the ring with Laila Ali or the whole kickboxing class at my local Bally’s and get my arse kicked. I don’t want to go anywhere near Grace Jones. She would eat me…and not the good/fun/Anna way. Oh great now I have visions of Grace Jones over my corpse, blood dripping from her teeth.

'talos runs to mommy

And another thing…what is the upgrade path of Conan?

Barbarian --> Destroyer --> ???

Barbarian --> Destroyer --> ??? --> PROFIT!

Conan the Destroyer trailer – or alleged trailer. Is the audio for real? “But his biggest triumph of all… was at the box office!”

I haven’t watched the movie in a long, long, time. Do they recycle the Barbarian soundtrack in the flick itself, or just the trailer? Either case, they shouldn’t.

‘Karas’ huh? Was it because of my Fantasy SciFi Team? :smiley:

I totally concur with this sentiment. Grace Jones always struck me as ugly and somewhat inhuman. Her role in the bond movie where she parachutes off the eiffel tower was not the “bond girl” experience that it ought to have been. blech. blech to grace jones i say.

Sean’s defense of Waterworld…well, i guess i enjoyed one-eyed wackjob dennis hopper screaming at the scary dudes and waving his bottle of Jim Bean around

mostly i enjoyed naughty naughty Jeanne Tripplehorn - she of the polygomous marriage in Big Love.

But it was truly ludicrous let’s be clear.

sean is in good company though. Apparently kevin costner said waterworld would be remembered as “one of the finest science fiction yarns ever produced”. That is quite a statement, putting Waterworld on the cherished altar along with Star Wars, Blade Runner, etc.

Let us all take that with a grain of salt.

Never thought of Crom as a “do nothing” god, but rather as the god you don’t want to do anything. Like the father who, after a long hard day at the slaughterhouse, his kids don’t want to cause him to get up out of his chair once he sat down. Who, by his wife’s black-eye, had to tell her something more than once.

Barbarian --> Destroyer --> Terminator --> Governor

you left out Commando

Now that Im rewatching Xena Im remembering why I loved this show when it was on. Also makes clear a few things, like my fetish for pretty, smart, independent brunettes who can kick my sorry-barb six ways from sunday.

Conan the Governor, that has so many possibilities.

Hi guys,
I just discovered the GWC podcasts and was immediately grabbed by the Firefly discussion that I’ve been following. I’m still going back and listening to older 'casts, but I’m almost caught up to the current one.

I’m a big fan of Firefly and Trek and BSG and various comics. Like Audra, I’m a geeky academic-- technically a former academic, since I’m out of it now, but I did my BA and MA in English and taught college English for several years before deciding to go off in another direction.

I’ve got two boys-- 11 and 14-- and my 14 year-old is a voracious reader like me, loves comics, computers, SF, and is a writer. I introduced him to Firefly not too long ago and he loved it. When he was done watching the series, he turned to me and told me that it was almost cruel to have shown him this and for there to be no more episodes. (To be a Firefly fan is to know the meaning of “bittersweet.” Even the movie doesn’t soothe the ache that we all have for a season two or three.)

So as I listen to the podcasts, I’ve been saving the Firefly segments to listen to in the car as I drive him to school every day. Your comments are always interesting and insightful. My son and I don’t always agree with you or with each other, but we love your conversations and they have sparked some interesting conversations in my car early in the morning on school days.

I’m looking forward to listening to more and to participating in the forum. Thanks!

Welcome aboard, geekdad.

Just wanted to say. I listen to the cast in my car going to and from work. Listening this morning to the piece about Chuck getting the warthog in places he shouldn’t made me laugh so hard I nearly crashed. I do that too in games, although not with quite so much dedication!

And apparently they all end badly…

in his defense the state appears to be largely ungovernable…

Just to pick up on the Wheel of Pain/Price-is-Right Wheel theme: Avatar: the Last Airbender* had an episode where Aang was convicted of causing harm to a village and had to spin a Wheel of Punishment to determine his sentence. Punishments listed on the wheel included Boiled in Oil and Bed of Nails, with the most desirable outcome being Community Service, represented graphically–and hilariously–by a stick figure pushing a broom.

*Yes, I have a nine-year-old, why do you ask?
