GWC Podcast #209

Ok, that’s just awesome. +1 for honesty!

I make that Rodney Dangerfield joke all the time, and almost no one (save Audra and Sean) get it. It generates more than a few funny looks – especially in business meetings.

Fear not. I’m told that regular runners (or almost-runners in my case) get URIs pretty often. I hope it’s not true, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna stop, so you may yet get more pretty-darn-reasonable Dr. Girlfriend impressions from me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, I was specifically referencing the “people’s car:” the Beetle. The Beetle was first released in 1938 – the year in which IJ:TLC was set. So chances were reasonable that unless they got the first one off the line, we wouldn’t see one in the flick. And seeing one outside of Germany would’ve been all but impossible.

But hey – if any of y’all are more versed on Beetle lore than me, that wouldn’t surprise me at all. I’m not really a fan.

And, yeah, Snatch is awesome.

Like the good Rev - i do love me some snatch…

…yep, it’s just as wrong sounding as when you read it the first time…

I’ll use derivative, and see it used for a number of different things - but it’s not empty of meaning like you would suggest, in most cases (there are certainly those who just yell DERIVATIVE! TEH SUCK!!!111!! because they have nothing else to say). For me, derivative can be either positive or negative - depending on how I read the intention of an author/artist/etc. In the positive light, something being derivative engages with the work(s) it references in interesting ways; in the negative light, derivative uses works that have come before in either ways that don’t work for me, or misses out on the potential it could have had. Again, this is just how I usually use the word, and I know not everyone is consistent with it, but I thought I’d put that out there.

I have to admit I laughed my sorryBarb off at Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. It was one of those movies that was so bad it was hilarious!

My feelings on Mal are mixed, at times I hate him and on other occasions I like him. He is a survivor, a bully and a patriot. He loves his ship and his freedom, and I believe on a certain level he loves Zoe too. He is concerned first for himself, and then second for those who have proven themselves worthy of his loyalty.

He works best under pressure and even better when he has something to believe in, something to drive him. This was shown during the war, and again when he learned the deep dark secret of Miranda. As for the question of him being a leader… Hell no!

If you want an example of what a true leader is refer to the Honor Harrington books which have been brought up by the crue on previous podcasts. A leader inspires their crew, motivates them and makes them realize they are capable of doing more than they ever believed possible. They rule not through fear but by the power of their personality and through a earned respect of their experience and strength of character.

And as for cavalry:

The 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment is a regiment of the United States Army currently stationed at Fort Hood, TX.

The Regiment has a history in the United States Army that dates back to 19 May 1846, when it was Constituted in the Regular Army as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. This unit was reorganized at the start of the American Civil War as the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment on 3 August 1861. Today, “3rd” has been replaced by the designator “3d” in the regiment’s title, and the word “armored” has been added to recognize it as a heavy cavalry regiment (equipped with M1 Abrams tanks and M3 Bradley cavalry fighting vehicles)

Under various names it has seen action during ten major conflicts: the Indian Wars, the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, World War I, World War II, the Persian Gulf War, SFOR in Bosnia, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Twenty-three of the Regiment’s troopers received the Medal of Honor, all awarded for gallantry in action between 1871 and 1898. The list includes William “Buffalo Bill” Cody, whose award was rescinded in 1916 for not being a member of the military. Cody’s medal was reinstated in 1989.

At present, the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment is the only heavy armored cavalry regiment in the U.S. Army. The other two remaining armored cavalry regiments, the 2nd and 11th, are organized as brigade combat teams.

Patton was the first US officer to experiment with the use of armor in rapid cavalry style combat maneuvers on the battle field, they used old Renault tanks in their war-games.

We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

Ah, thank you. That is essentially what I mean, you know, me and words.

For me, Avatar manages to be really derivative, taking plots and whatnots from so many movies, yet also unoriginal too (because as I’ve said before, I find the movies Avatar takes from to be for the most part, better movies). And all that might even be ok IF I care enough the characters to overlook all that. But I just didn’t really feel anything too much (or know anything too much) for any of the characters at any given point in the movie, so the emotional stuff came across as a bit shallow because of the lack of depth for the characters. It was a fun movie to watch in the cinema, but it’s just not my cup of rewatch tea. Obviously, that’s just me, and I know a lot of people loved this movie which is great, but given Cameron’s really awesome works in the past, I just wish that he gave us so much more than a visual marvel. (I’m so demanding. :D)

And, that’s an interesting tidbit about VW. Good to know.

Thanks. That makes sense to me. I could probably smack the horse a couple more times, but it seems good and dead.

Kind of in line with the whole “Elsa picked the wrong cup on purpose” thing, I was really surprised to see how conflicted Elsa is.

Yes, she’s clearly a bad guy, but like Baltar, she’s not really on anyone’s side, other than her own. She willingly betrays the Jones Boys, but she’s get upset when Jones Sr. gets shot. She tells her Nazi cohorts that the Indy came back to Germany, but she doesn’t sell them out until Indy/Henry have a decent head start. She really wants the glory for herself, but when the time was right, she killed the really bad guy to save them all.

This time around, I saw a lot more depth in her character than I did ever before, which just reaffirmed that ‘Crusade’ is my favorite Indiana Jones movie.

Sure, Marion’s the best Indy babe, but Elsa and her scheming ways is my favorite.

Thanks so much for this! you ROCK!!!

And thanks so much to everyone for your posty goodness! Such fun to read!!

So I just finished watching all of Firefly in one day

Anyway, I can see what Sean and Chuck are saying about Mal being a bully. He does tend to strong arm people when he isn’t getting what he wants out of them. That said, I tend to find it makes his character more interesting, rather than annoying. Partially because it doesn’t come out in every situation. I think he’d be a lot more boring if he only strong armed people. Also I find it adds a layer of depth. I’m not sure if Mal is broken, so much as he is really angry and disappointed and it comes out when he’s stressed.

Anyways, that’s just my two cents.

well. God knows i had my share of being slammed against lockers by mouth-breathing meatheads growing up (in fact a few months ago i attended a high school reunion and was so deeply, deeply pleased to see the rivers of diarrea of mediocrity my former tormenters are currently swimming in. but that’s another matter).

Mal isn’t so much a bully as much as he is a Western archetype. That archetype muscles their way through conflict. it’s part of the ethos. This whole “bully” talk is perhaps more about one too many wedgies Sean received than a legitimate facet of Mal’s character. Being a bully - in my view - contains an element of malice, which i don’t think Mal has.

Ah well.

I really, really hated the Crystal Skull. So while we are on the subject - i hope the gang brings up the wildly disturbing South Park episode, that shows Spielberg and Lucas raping Indiana Jones as a metaphor? i don’t mean to sound like a lunatic - did anyone see that episode? (help?)

I think i is Season 12 Episode 8… you can probably watch it on Comedy Central’s website.

Leadership

Example A-

In ‘All Good Things’ just before the Enterprise is about to enter a deadly anomoly that will almost certainly destroy their ship Picard gives a stirring speech which inspires the crew to live up to Picards belief in their abilities.

Example B-

A flipant remark made by Mal after the fact (a very important distinction). Not even in the same ballpark! Thank you for helping me make my point…

I was gonna bring that up in the Is Mal a bully? thread. Please see the Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns or any John Wayne or Clint Eastwood Western. These characters could be considered bullys but they live in a world of survival. You shoot or you are shot, literally or figuratively. Every word / interaction is a gunfight. You must be the last man standing.

Firefly is a Western in space. Our main characters are outlaws. Mal has to deal with thugs on a daily basis to make his way and take care of his crew. Mal does not have the luxury of showing any weakness or intimacy. I think that is why he is so harsh with Inara. Whenever someone mentions their love interest, he calls her a whore. He doesn’t want anyone to think he has feelings for her, especially himself.

You aren’t comparing like with like though. the kind of motivation and speech that a ship’s captain gives sailing into harms way is completely different from a squad sergeant telling his people to ‘hold the line’. Similar principles, different execution.

My point was more that before Serenity valley, Mal was inspirational, it was after that that he became more bitter and cynical having lost his faith. IYSWIM?

I know I’m stretching back a good ways on this one, but in the Temple of Doom podcast it was said that you can still buy the Indy whip. Well it appears as though you can also by a copy of Henry’s notebook. It is a fan made item, but it looks really good with all sorts of inserts and everything. The one thing that I don’t know is if it has A. Hitler’s autograph

Henry’s Notebook
